Stephanie, "Access to the Internet" is quite a blurry concept: users? coverage? subscribers? People that deal with e-readiness issues usually refer to "Internet users" but, depending on your interests, you might be willing to know other data. The best sources are the International Telecommunication Unit, the World Bank and the World Economic Forum, respectively: http://www.itu.int/ITU-D/icteye/ (only with MS Internet Explorer) http://www.worldbank.org/kam http://www.insead.edu/v1/gitr/wef/main/analysis/ Here I have a list of other resources that collect (and sometimes publish) data about Information and Communication Technologies: http://ictlogy.net/wiki/index.php?title=Category:Data_ICT Hope that helped. If not, please do write to me off-list :) -- Ismael Peña-López ICTlogy.net Public Policies for Development and ICT4D School of Law and Political Science Open University of Catalonia
Also access is not use and this week I am considering the question of what impact the internet has..what do people use the net for? what is Internet literacy? at work at statistics Canada we also consider intensity of use in terms of frequency. Also years of access. Many ways to dice these simple numbers. Peter On 12-Dec-08, at 1:14 PM, Ismael Peña-López wrote:

The Eurostat website allows to download data about the evolution of Internet users and their socio-demographic profiles of most of the European countries since about 2002 up to currently early 2008. The exact start year depends on the country. One of the profile subgroups is composed of subtables of age group by gender. The reference group is either all residents or internet users. The data are based on surveys of the national statistical offices of EU member states, candidate countries, and of some neighbouring countries (Norway, Switzerland) though the latter data do not cover all the years and all the questions. You get the data at http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/portal/page?_pageid=2973,64549069,2973_6455... HTH F. Thomas

yes see http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/pls/portal/url/ITEM/508EF31506FA0DF0E044000... but the wording of the question(s) have changed over time e.g. 'any in household' to 'I use a mobile phone' A lot of the mobile related content of the surveys/data is to do with internet access & usage via a mobile phone (and presumably now various other kinds of mobile devices). The social significance of 'traditional' uses of a mobile seem not to be considered relevant to policy. Presumably because of their wide penetration and the success of market-led provision. Fortunately (some) national regulators take a different view :-) Ben
Hi Rich, The only data on mobile phones I know of on the Eurostat website is the number and the rate of mobile phone subscriptions per 100 inh. by country, 1995 to 2006. Norway starts in 1991 with a mobile phone density rate of 5%, 2006 of 109%. Is this what you look for? Ownership rates by sociodemographic groups on an annual cross-country basis are only provided by Eurobarometer surveys. But I guess they are less reliable than the surveys of Eurostat's annual TELECOM inquiry to the National Statistical Institutes. Cordialement Frank Thomas
