Re: [Air-l] concerns about new biblio programs: Endnote issue
I'm happy with open or closed source as long as the program uses some form of open standards that allow import /export. I've recently had a bit of a nightmare with Endnote. I've been collaborating on a paper for OTM COMINF'06[1} with a colleague from another university. He uses Endnote 9, my university gives me Endnote 7. My colleague Marcus sends me his Endnote 9 bibliography, I can't read it. Endnote 9 appears not to be backwards compatible with Endnote 7. I'd really welcome any suggestions how we overcome this problem: anybody else sorted this out? We had a few goes at exporting from E.9 in various formats. cheers! Our investment in building our bibliographies tend to cumulate. That's why I stick with Endnote, despite its propietary nature. Even after being bought by ISI, it seems to have staying power. And with my 16K items in my bibliography, I'd hate to have to re-enter. Or am I missing something? this has been the case with the past few versions of endnote. you'll need endnote 9. [there is, as far as we've been able to find, no sane route backwards once you've let endnote modify your bib files into a newer version's format....] [endnote 7->8 had the same problem, btw. so does interop between 8 and 9.] --e
You may be able to download a trial of v9 to run long enough to export/"save as" a v7 file, then uninstall the trial (or otherwise revert to v7) and use the file.

I have been reading this discussion with great interest. I use Endnote constantly; I use it not only for basic functions such as storing references and inserting citations into written documents, but also to store my research notes and keywords which assist in my literature organisation system. I always try to include article abstracts as well, so searching my database with keywords usually brings up the article I'm hoping to find! I'm most interested in all the other alternatives, but given all the time I've invested in learning Endnote, like Barry Wellman, I'm wondering what it is that alternative software packages can offer that would make them worth changing too. The social networking possibilities is one such feature available in citeulike but not Endnote... It's hard to imagine finding a feature that is so compelling that I would abandon a program that I've managed to integrate so well into my writing practice! For anyone interesting in things Endnote, I also subscribe to the Endnote Interest e-list: http://www.endnote.com/support/en-interest.asp - most technical questions get answered and there is a healthy discussion about bibliographic software in general on the list. cheers monica -----Original Message----- From: air-l-bounces@listserv.aoir.org [mailto:air-l-bounces@listserv.aoir.org] On Behalf Of elw@stderr.org Sent: Thursday, 26 October 2006 1:31 AM To: air-l@listserv.aoir.org Subject: Re: [Air-l] concerns about new biblio programs: Endnote issue
