This is not exactly what you are asking for, but in case it is useful information, the netiquette guidelines were first published as RFC 1855 (requests for comments document no. 1855), and a number of other recommendations regarding online community norms were also first articulated in RFCs. (RFCs can be found online at the IETF website.) The RFCs are the documents in the open-to-anyone discourse by which technical decision-making for the Internet takes place en route. The discourse also includes much additional "softer" material of this type. Sandra Braman On 16-Apr-09, at 12:56 PM, Nancy Baym wrote:
Hi all --
Can anyone recommend a good article about FAQs as means of articulating and enforcing online community norms?
Thanks
Nancy

Greetings, In my 2001 PhD dissertation, "Misbehavior in Cyber Places: The Regulation of Online Conduct in Virtual Communities on the Internet," I reviewed literature on FAQs (including Dutton's article, among others) and considered the role of FAQs in enforcing online community norms, along with related materials like RFCs, AUPs, TOSs, etc. The dissertation is available from ProQuest/UMI in both printed and electronic form (PDF file) at http://wwwlib.umi.com/dissertations/fullcit/3022160 Regards to all, Janet Janet Sternberg, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Communication and Media Studies Latin American and Latino Studies Fordham University Bronx, NY 10458-9993 USA 718-817-4855 voice | 718-817-4868 fax jsternberg@fordham.edu | janet.sternberg@nyu.edu President, Media Ecology Association http://www.media-ecology.org William Dutton wrote:

This reminds me of the parallel "tutorial" - Eugene Spafford's "A Primer on How to Work With the Usenet Community" ... at http://www.faqs.org/faqs/usenet/primer/part1/ Steve
