Christina - my experience has been that this kind of "encounters" on-list as well as responses from individuals off-list, while studying online "communities" are quite common. I have had several such experiences myself, one such led to my dissertation (1998 - see http://www.cyberdiva.org/erniestuff/sanov.html) Of course, the reasons for these encounters are often complex and cannot be generalized across all virtual "communities" since each such community is contextually situated within larger "rl" communities that give rise to situations and issues that perhaps the academics/researchers (and even the list participants themselves) have not considered in depth prior to the attempting the study ( this may not even be possible to do prior to launching your investigation...). Hi Folks: In investigating quite a different phenomenon, I stumbled across an email list with two quite different contributors to it--both academics interested in talking about the topic on an academic level, and non-academics that seem interested in enthusing and speculating about the subject rather than studying it. Whatever the case, friction has arisen; mostly, non-academics have taken umbrage with the academics, often just for getting into debates (though some are quite heated). Of course, they need not do so--the non-academics could simply "talk amongst themselves," etc. Rather, they treat every contributor as though they should see themselves as members of one community that is governed by one particular ethic. (Hmmm, maybe I did that by my address form above.) Anybody know of research done that talks about this--that is, that talks about this assumption of close community on e-mail lists? Internet Paradox Revisited

(1998) reported small but reliable negative effects of using the Internet on measures of social involvement and psychological well-being among new Internet users in 1995-1996. We called the effects a paradox because participants used the Internet heavily for communication, which generally has positive effects. A 3-year follow-up of the original sample found that negative effects dissipated. We also report findings from a longitudinal study in 1998-99 of new computer and television purchasers. This sample experienced overall positive effects of using the Internet on communication, social involvement, and well-being. Consistent with a rich get richer model, the Internet generally predicted better outcomes for extraverts and those with more social support but worse outcomes for introverts or those with less support. Regarding international comparative data: While the data are changing, and some good online resources have already been recommended, let me also suggest: Carleen F. Maitland and Johannes M. Bauer, "National Level Culture and Global diffusion: the Case of the Internet," in Charles Ess (Ed.), _Culture, Technology, Communication: Towards an Intercultural Global Village_, pp. 87-120. Albany, NY: SUNY Press, 2001. Building on previous efforts, Maitland and Bauer develop a framework for quantitative approaches to technology diffusion that will be of value in its own right as well as it includes numerous sources for the sorts of data you're looking for, including data for the OECD. In addition (quoting from my introduction): Previous research has tended to focus on matters of economy and infrastructure, with relatively little work in the area of culture - in part, because earlier work has shown that economic factors are the stronger predictors of technology adoption. In order to test these findings and their own enhancements of earlier diffusion theory, Maitland and Bauer build especially on the work of Hofstede and Herbig to include three cultural factors in their study: uncertainty avoidance, gender equality, and English language ability. Their extensive statistical study draws on a considerable range of data sources, as available for 185 countries during the time period between 1991 and 1997. In examining Internet growth between countries, they find that cultural variables are less significant in explaining adoption than economic or infrastructure variables: of these, teledensity, International Call Cost, and School Enrollment emerge as the strongest predictors - the last finding supporting the importance of education in development. For that, the cultural factor of English language ability also plays a significant role. In analyzing growth within countries, their data likewise uncovers a comparatively stronger role for economic factors - in this case, the number of PC¹s per capita. But cultural factors - namely, uncertainty avoidance and gender empowerment - also play a significant role. Beyond Maitland and Bauer, you may want to look at some of the reports on specific cultural domains - Germany/Austria/Switzerland (Hrachovec), Switzerland (Rey), Kuwait (Wheeler), Korea (Yoon, Fouser), India (Kenniston), and Thailand (Hongladarom) as these include sources for country-specific data.
