Hello... I wondered if someone on this list was able to capture all of Microsoft's Tay bot's tweets and mentions from the time it went live until it was shut down, March 23-24? I did not get my collector setup in time, so I am looking for someone who collected Tay's original tweets and mentions, and who would be willing to share them. Hello, I am a Master's student in sociology at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. I am currently working on research involving a Facebook group as a sort of virtual ethnography. I was wondering if anyone knew of any researchers who work with archiving Facebook group discussions. I am looking for a way to better facilitate the archiving of my data, as I planned on creating a corpus based on 6 months of discussions within the Facebook group. AoIR 2016 Doctoral Colloquium

This is a reminder that applications for the AoIR 2016 doctoral colloquium are open and due on or before 15 June 2016. The colloquium offers PhD students working in Internet research or related fields a one day forum to be convened on 5 October 2016. For many years, this pre-conference event has provided students with the opportunity to spend a concentrated amount of time with senior scholars to share research projects, address methodological and theoretical challenges, and exchange informal advice on juggling the multiple pressures associated with job searching, publishing, and finishing the dissertation. As always we will have excellent mentors in place. Karine Nahon, Susanna Paasonen, Annette Markham, Sharif Mowlabocus and Zizi Papacharrisi are already signed up and we are sure to have some more great people join them. To apply for a place at the consortium, please provide: a) a two-page summary of your research. This should provide a context for the research, describe the methods being used, the progress to date, and primary concerns and issues; b) A brief statement indicating why you want to participate in this doctoral colloquium and what you hope to get out of it. Also note that, in order to increase the diversity of participation in the AoIR conferences, the Association of Internet Researchers makes available conference fee waivers and partial travel stipends ($500) per year. Conference scholarships are made available to participants who have had papers accepted via the peer review process for the main conference, and applications are due on 1 June 2016. Dear AoIR people, FYI a conference & workshop that some on this list might be interested in. -------- Call for abstracts: Making sense of the value of personal data (http://mydata2016.org/call-for-abstracts/) MyData 2016 is an international conference that takes place in Helsinki in end of August / early September. The purpose of the conference is to find ways to unleash the value of personal data through human-centric data management and technological innovation. The event will bring together up to 1000 participants from businesses, the research community, civil society, government and local communities. One track in the conference takes the form of an academic workshop on August 31st. RATIONALE In the workshop we aim to unpack and clarify the “ways to unleash the value of personal data,” both the unleashing and the value, from the point of view of people. What does it mean for personal data to be valuable to people? What is the value of disclosing data, choosing to keep it secret, or the ability to harness it for individual, social or societal purposes? In particular, how to understand and assess this value? Personal data is clearly valuable to firms, who are able to aggregate data over several individuals and contexts. Personal data does bring valuable benefits to people themselves too. Valuable outcomes to people might include personalized or targeted services, and the possibility to generate and employ personal data for self-reflection. At the same time, the increasing necessity to submit to ubiquitous data extraction processes brings along subjective privacy harms. Disclosing data can also lead to tangible, but as of yet unforeseeable, negative consequences at some point in the future. The social nature of personal data makes this also a social question: data about me, and the consequences of sharing it or keeping it secret, may concern also others or the society at large. Online services are often accessible only after agreeing to data collection and use policies, and firms have framed this as a value exchange of personal data to services. In cases, the users of services may see themselves as the rightful beneficiary of more of the value generated via their data. The current data collection and use practices expect people to be able to make an informed analysis of the benefits and costs of disclosing their data, a practice that is riddled with conceptual and practical difficulties. The consequences of disclosing data are in many cases not transparent or understandable, and the downstream markets of personal data make this even more problematic. People are not intrinsically capable of valuing abstract things – perhaps something to aid people in valuing personal data would be needed? Discussion of personal data is often framed in abstract terms like privacy – perhaps we are also lacking the terminology and concepts to approach the issue? MOTIVATING QUESTIONS Your contribution in the workshop could concern the following, or related, questions: - Is the value of personal data a relevant concept or a useful framework? What new framings or concepts could we employ to better make sense of the uses of personal data? - How can the consequences of personal data collection and use to our everyday lives be made transparent or understandable? - What tools could help people in assessing the value of data? What socio-technical solutions could be developed and employed? - What rights do people have over their personal data? How could the politics of data enhance or endanger individual freedoms? - What alternatives to the current notice & choice paradigm can be developed? What are the problems these alternatives aim to solve and how? - How to approach the complexities of personal data vs. aggregated data, and personal data vs. social consequences? - How to make personal data value exchanges understandable to people who participate in these exchanges? New Book Series Announcement

Dear AOIR members, Routledge and I have agreed to launch a new book series (Routledge Research in Digital Media and Culture in Asia) since April 2016. This will be of interest to some of you. ROUTLEDGE RESEARCH IN DIGITAL MEDIA AND CULTURE IN ASIA Editor Dal Yong Jin, Associate Professor at Simon Fraser University Since the late 1990s, Asia has emerged as one of the major centers for the production of digital media and transnational popular culture. While the influence of Western culture and technologies has continued in the global markets, the Asian cultural and digital industries have developed many of their digital technologies, such as social networking sites, instant mobile messengers, smartphones and relevant applications. Asian cultural industries have also created media/cultural products, such as television programs, films, music, and digital games, and expanded the export of these products to the global markets. Consequently, Asian digital technologies and popular culture consisting of non-Western based digital media and cultural forms have rapidly become a global sensation wherein Western audiences as well as Asian users enjoy several local cultural forms, including popular music and television programs, as well as digital technologies. This new book series critically, culturally, and historically contextualizes the nascent development of Asian popular culture and digital technologies. The books in this series emphasize that digital technologies and culture are fundamentally altering the ways in which we communicate. The series examines questions about the impact of digital media and society in all its facets, including economics, culture and politics. As its detailed major goals, this book series investigates Asian media, popular culture and digital technologies, encompassing all major cultural sectors, from television programs to online games, and from pop music to smartphones, as well as digital technologies and social media, through the use of consistent theoretical and methodological frameworks. In particular, the books in this series explore media convergence between digital technologies and content to analyze the emergence of cutting-edge digital culture, such as webtoons, mobile novels, and mobile games. The books in the series mostly determine the possibility of the advancement of non-Western theories and new theoretical perspectives in the midst of the continuation of Western dominance. In other words, with the growth of local popular culture and digital technologies, the books explore whether non-Western perspectives challenge central assumptions and arguments developed by Western perspectives. They may discuss the integration of Western and non-Western perspectives in media and area studies, the uses of theories of global comparative research, the relevance of non-Western theories and models, and successful and failed efforts at theoretical cross-pollination. We hope to secure the book series as the platform of choice for the best scholarship within the field. While our primary emphasis will be upon single/joint-authored books, we will consider edited collections where the book is brought together by editors in ways that result in a coherent work that is both innovative and more than the sum of the individual chapters.
