In this talk, Dr. Möllers parses the current debate on technofascism(s) to develop a materialist understanding of technofascist formations from Science and Technology Studies (STS) and anti-colonial perspectives. She demonstrates that a focus on materiality highlights both the ordinariness and global/planetary dimensions of contemporary technofascist formations. She argues that a materialist understanding of technofascist formations clarifies that the struggle against them must not be limited to resisting Big Tech but must encompass the abolition of all infrastructures of state violence. *Norma Möllers* is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Queen’s University, where she researches and teaches on technologies of state violence. Her current research focuses on the relationship between algorithmic warfare and digital capitalism. Hi everyone, A quick follow-up to my earlier email about the All Things In Moderation 2026 conference - the full program is now live, and the event takes place 25–26 June, fully virtual and on-demand. ATIM sits at the intersection of digital relational governance, moderation, and the everyday labour of online community stewardship, drawing on original research presented alongside frontline practitioner experience. Sessions examine feminist digital governance and moderation ethics, the lived experience of frontline trust and safety work, co-designed community policy-making, and broader questions about the trajectory of the field. Several AoIR members are presenting this year, bringing empirical and theoretical work into direct conversation with practice. For those of us working on platform governance, online safety, or digital community formation, ATIM offers a complement to traditional academic venues, with an audience that includes working moderators, community managers, and trust and safety professionals alongside researchers. Yet there have been some prominent recent developments around Extended Reality (XR) – a blurring of actual and virtual worlds encompassing Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality – that deserve equal scrutiny. Often supported by AI, XR is transforming the way we interact with digital and physical spaces. Our conference will explore the growing importance of this technology. Its primary aim is to gather scholars and practitioners working on and with XR to jointly establish *an interdisciplinary research field of Multisensory XR*, with a focus on critical enquiry into its *social, cultural and ethical dimensions*. Current XR designs are often driven by industry ambitions for total immersion, seeking to captivate users so that they ‘never want to leave’. This approach remains overly focused on commercial needs at the expense of social and personal gains. It also exhibits ocular-centric bias, overlooking the multiple ways people experience the world while restricting access for diverse groups. With this, we propose an approach to XR that *places ‘the non-average’ user at the very centre of all design and practice *(Alexander 2025)*.* We also want to move beyond the language of ‘Tech for Good’. That phrase can imply that the ethical value of a technology is self-evident, or that technical innovation will resolve complex social problems. Drawing on the framework of minimal ethics (Zylinska 2009, 2014), we approach responsibility as something that must be worked out in specific situations. Rather than assuming that more immersive technology is inherently better, we ask what makes an XR experience worth having, for whom and under what conditions. Here ethics connects with wider socio-political issues, leading to the creation of not just better technology but also more responsible sociotechnical imaginaries (Preece et al., 2022). Challenging the colonising idea of VR/XR as an ‘empathy machine’ (Nakamura 2020), we position XR beyond simplistic techno-solutionism. *We invite 20-minute papers and project-led presentations *from across the arts, humanities, social sciences, design, creative practice, health sciences, computing and industry research. Submissions may address artistic work, design processes, social and cultural analysis, education, healthcare, accessibility, platform politics or emerging forms of multisensory interaction. We are particularly interested in work that challenges ocularcentrism, questions established ideas of immersion or proposes alternatives to proprietary platform models. The key goal of the conference is to explore XR that not only *works* but that *works for diverse users and in different configurations of sensory experience*. In other words, we want to showcase XR that not only succeeds technically and artistically but also delivers ethical and social value. Possible themes include, but are not limited to: - Multisensory XR experiences that may include, but also move beyond, screen-based and headset-led models of immersion. - The design and evaluation of XR applications involving haptics, spatial sound, smell or taste. - Critical approaches to ocularcentrism and the visual bias built into immersive technologies. - Accessibility in XR, especially work that begins with the needs of users who fall outside the dominant assumptions about age, embodiment or sensory perception. - Disability-led perspectives on immersive technology, including the productive role of friction, adaptation and non-standard use. - Ethical frameworks for assessing what makes an immersive experience worthwhile, rather than merely effective or engaging. - The effects of XR on attention, body image and mental wellbeing, including sensory overload, dissociation and forms of cognitive capture. - Critical examinations of immersion and the industry ambition to keep users inside an experience for as long as possible. - XR beyond the ‘empathy machine’: critiques of simulation as a substitute for political understanding or social responsibility. - Open XR infrastructures and alternatives to platform dependency, proprietary ecosystems and extractive business models. - The use of multisensory XR in creative practice, cultural heritage, education or healthcare. - Speculative design and other practice-based methods for developing more responsible XR futures. Through analog meme-making, we will collectively explore, map, and challenge the assumptions embedded in conversation-based AI systems like health bots, assistants like Copilot, Meta AI, and many others we encounter daily. We will then co-create (counter)imaginaries of chatbots, with two lines of inquiry to guide us: Locality/Materiality: Where do chatbots ‘live’? We define and explore the infrastructures, both physical and imaginary, that sustain chatbots’ seeming intangibility and invisibility. We will map out how different ‘localities’ of chatbots relate to the material processes behind them – such as computing and data flows – and how our intuitive understandings map onto them. Relationality: How do users define a chatbot’s role and agency? We explore how we, as users, relate to chatbots through what we share, feel, and expect when we engage with them. We will map out how different relational metaphors, expectations, and emotional exchanges frame these interactions, often granting chatbots a form of agency. We will conclude by weaving these perspectives together: Does the “where” and “who” change the “what” of a human-chatbot conversation? How does (the way we imagine) a chatbot’s materiality shape its role in our lives? Project Highlights may include, but are not limited to: • Overviews of funded research projects and their objectives. • Project methodologies, architectures, and experimental frameworks. • Early or intermediate results, including lessons learned and preliminary insights. • Datasets, benchmarks, tools, platforms, and other project outcomes released or in progress. • Collaboration experiences, challenges, and emerging research directions from national or international projects. Project Highlights that can stimulate discussion and collaboration within the ISSRE community are welcome. Ongoing projects and projects completed not earlier than October 2025 are eligible. Accepted contributions will be published in the Supplemental Proceedings of ISSRE 2026 and made available via IEEE Xplore. Topics of Interest Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: • Reliability, safety, maintainability, security, survivability, resilience, robustness, and other dependability attributes. • Faults (defects, bugs, etc.), errors, failures, and other dependability threats. • Reliability of all systems, applications, networks, and software, including problems, solutions, and discussions. • Metrics, measurement, assessment, monitoring, modeling, estimation, and prediction regarding reliability. • Reliability of AI-powered software systems, including large language models (LLMs), autonomous agents, and AI-enabled applications. • Other contents about software reliability, such as normative/regulatory/ethical spaces, societal aspects, etc. Presentations The presentation might be in the form of a short talk in a Fast Abstracts/Project Highlights session or a poster. Further details about presentations and posters will be shared with authors upon notification. Submission Guidelines Manuscripts must be: • submitted via EasyChair as a single Portable Document Format (PDF) file with all fonts embedded; • written in English and be formatted according to the IEEE Computer Society Format Guidelines. Papers are submitted via Easy Chair https://easychair.org/conferences?conf=issre2026 . Manuscripts must adhere to IEEE Conference Publishing Policies. Particularly, they should NOT have been previously published or be under submission elsewhere. All submissions will be screened for plagiarized material through the IEEE Cross Check portal.
