Inclusion of short links in academic publications?

Thank you all for your comments! The reason I asked is not because of a word limit but because one of my committee members suggested I'd use short links to ease access for readers of the print dissertation. I do have quite a lot of electronic sources as footnotes in some of the chapters and he mentioned he'd have typed a shortened url but not a long one. An alternative would be to include short urls in the footnotes and add an appendix with corresponding long links. I'm not sure it's worth the hassle though. Skoric (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) Nowadays, when citizens, activists and participants in social movements want to voice their opinions and negotiate their political identities they increasingly do so in hybrid media environments that are particularly suitable for mobilisation, organisation and discussion. With a massive increase in online social networking, digital infrastructures are lowering the threshold for political involvement. This, in turn, is considerably shifting the power dynamics of participation. Digital storytelling, for example, has become part of the strategies used by contemporary political activists. While strategies in the past revolved mainly around the attempts to influence the mass media and gatekeepers, today more and more citizens are becoming reporters and commentators themselves, often providing first-hand, real-time coverage of offline political activities. However, some have questioned the notion of social networking platforms as tools for social change and/or horizontal power structures, in particular in relation to issues of surveillance and data privacy. These sorts of critical views have been voiced in public debates on the implications of corporate ownership of social networks. Another question that has been raised is whether “clicktivism” is eroding the physical or embodied participation constituting traditional offline activism. It must be also taken into account that very few movements have succeed through mediated activism alone. Hence, on the one hand we are witnessing how increasing access to the internet has resulted in an array of new strategies and success stories for contemporary activism, in particular with regards to mobilisation. On the other hand, we are still groping in the dark when it comes to understanding the place of digital participatory activities in the shifting landscapes of power in late modernity. For this special issue of JeDEM, we invite scholarly research to shed light on the issues of power and participation online. TOPICS CAN INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: Digital divides, hierarchy and marginalisation in political collectives, citizen networks and social movements Identity negotiation in digital activism and online collective action The intersections of individual, collective and connective identities in political movements online Socio-psychological aspects of political communication online Slacktivism, clicktivism, micro-activism and socio-political change Empirical accounts of shifting power relations and citizen/community empowerment in contemporary political participatory initiatives Mappings of power relations in online political networks Online platforms for mediated sociability and social capital creation and their role in civic mobilization The politics of privacy and surveillance in a networked world New governmental policies and networks Examples of new media strategies, real-time coverage and networked organisation in social and ad-hoc movements Implications and criticism of corporate ownership of social networks Social media activism in emerging and transitional democracies Multimedia configuations and citizens’ involvement in the public sphere Relevant articles from different national and disciplinary perspectives are welcome. what do social media users think of social media monitoring?

Hello list I sent a message to the list last year (entitled 'research with social media users about social media monitoring?') asking is anyone knew of any research with social media users about how they feel about what is done with their social media data through social media monitoring. I received a couple of expressions of interest and just one reference (thanks for these responses!): Crosstab. (2010). I include a brief description of it below. This project aims to explore what social media users think about social media monitoring, with particular reference to the monitoring of their own social media activity. Social media monitoring involves the application of a range of technologies to determine sentiments and opinions expressed within social media platforms about particular topics, in order to arrive at a measure of general sentiments and opinions. In recent years, the number of companies carrying out such activities has risen exponentially around the globe. In response, some cultural critics have raised concerns about the consequences of such activities, which might be seen as: a form of surveillance and affective control (Andrejevic 2011); the monetisation of friendship, feeling and intimacy (Hearn 2010); or a violation of the privacy of social media users (boyd 2010; Nissenbaum 2009). But little research has been done with social media users to explore how they feel about the possibility that the feelings and opinions they express in social media might be monitored, analysed and exploited for commercial gain. The research will take the form of three or four focus groups of approximately 8 participants, each of which constitutes a category of social media users. At each focus group, demographic information will be gathered about participants, alongside information about participants' social media use. Participants will be presented with a range of social media monitoring activities undertaken by media monitoring companies, and asked to express their views about these activities. The discussion with participants will seek to explore how they perceive their social media use, their attitudes towards privacy and intimacy in social media, and how they think about their privacy and intimacy in social media spaces.

*** Call for Expressions of Interest to join the Review Panel for the MERLOT Journal of Online Learning and Teaching (JOLT) *** In response to continual increases in the volume of manuscript submissions it receives, the MERLOT Journal of Online Learning and Teaching (JOLT at http://jolt.merlot.org/) is seeking expressions of interest from qualified individuals to join its panel of reviewers. JOLT is a peer-reviewed, open-access, online journal whose objectives are to: - Enable faculty to use technology effectively in online teaching and learning by learning from a community of researchers and scholars; - Enable academic programs to design and deploy academic technology to optimize online teaching and learning; - Build a community around the research and scholarly use of multimedia educational resources for online teaching and learning. JOLT welcomes papers on all aspects of online learning and teaching in higher education. Topics may include, but are not limited to: learning theory and the use of multimedia to improve online learning; instructional design theory and application; online learning and teaching initiatives; use of technology in online education; innovative online learning and teaching practices. All manuscripts submitted to JOLT are subjected to a prima facie evaluation by the Editor or Associate Editor before they are sent out for peer review. Those that pass this preliminary assessment are assigned to a minimum of two reviewers on the journal's reviewer panel, who are typically each given three weeks to submit their feedback. Every effort is made by the editors to match manuscripts to reviewers based on their areas of interest and expertise. The editors are responsible collating the reviewers' feedback and rendering a final decision on the manuscript in light of the feedback. (Additional reviews may be obtained if necessary, for example, in cases where the reviews received contain conflicting recommendations.) Generally, JOLT strives to advise authors on the disposition of their manuscripts within six to eight weeks of the date of submission. Dear Sir/ Madam, I am Uttaran Dutta, a doctoral candidate/ graduate lecturer in the Brian Lamb School of Communication, Purdue University. Currently, I am studying the knowledge systems and everyday struggles of indigenous communities of eastern India (with an emphasis on their communicative aspects). More specifically, the study is examining how the indigenous communities collectively identify their development needs and how they collaboratively formulate and design locally-situated intervention strategies to accomplish their development goals. I have already completed my preliminary research; and now I am planning to apply for grant(s) to conduct the final phase of the research project i.e. to collaboratively design the contextual solutions and making prototypes/ models, in the villages of eastern India. I will utilize the financial support/ grant money primarily for purchasing equipments, raw materials and paying wages to local indigenous participants. ***DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACTS EXTENDED TO MAY 1, 2012*** Special Issue of Feminist Media Studies: >From Veiling to Blogging: Women and Media in the Middle East Edited by Nahed Eltantawy Vol. 13, No.5, December 2013 Middle Eastern women have traditionally been viewed as weak and submissive, passively accepting male authority and leadership rather than seeking to be a leader in their own right. From Edward Said¹s Orientalism to Lila Abu-Lughod¹s ³Do Muslim Women Really Need Saving?² women of the Middle East have been portrayed as helpless creatures who are often hidden behind the veil, quietly waiting to be liberated. Recent democratic movements in the Middle East, popularly grouped together under the banner of the ³Arab Spring,² signal the rise of a new kind of political activism across the region, made possible, in large part, by the now widespread use of social media. The world has witnessed millions across Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, Libya, Yemen and Syria as they have marched to the squares and told their stories of life under repressive political regimes. How have women been involved in these events? What are their experiences and stories? In addition to the more widely known stories of political demonstrations in the region, there have also been more localized events, such as the women-led driving protests in Saudi Arabia, that suggest that there are many stories still to be told to unveil the realities of women¹s experiences in the Middle East. In what ways have women utilized media, including social media such as Twitter, Facebook and blogging for both personal and political expression and have these platforms contributed to the democratization of women¹s lives? This special issue seeks manuscripts that focus on Middle East women and their relationship with the media old and new how are women portrayed, how and why do women utilize media and technology, and women¹s media production.
