HCSNet is offering a workshop that brings together people from different disciplines interested in Natural User Interfaces (NUI). This workshop will discuss the role NUI can play, themes of interest as well as future work that NUI enables. Do gestures completely replace typical mouse pointers or simply augment it for some functionality? Do all applications work with gestures or only a select few? The goal of this workshop is to make a first step in identifying challenges and characterising NUI design obstacles. Possible themes of interest include: * Multimodal interfaces * Robust spoken-language interaction * Intelligent user interfaces * Social interaction strategies * Gesture and embodied interaction * Conversational agents * Task and activity modelling * Environment-specific issues * Tangible and mobile devices We are pleased to announce a keynote presentation by Daniel Wigdor. Daniel is the User Experience Architect on the Microsoft Surface project, where he leads a team developing fundamentals of touch and gestural interaction. Before joining Microsoft, he conducted research in advanced user interfaces and devices at Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs, at the Initiative in Innovative Computing at Harvard University, and at the University of Toronto where he completed an MSc and a PhD in computer science, specializing in multi-surface direct-touch environments. Learn more about Daniel Wigdor. Our second international speaker is Jamie Zigelbaum. Jamie is now working at Oblong Industries in Los Angeles. He was a PhD student in the Tangible Media Group at the MIT Media Lab where he built and studied next generation computer interfaces. He specializes in gestural and tangible interfaces and works to create new interactions between humans and machines that enable the full use of our evolutionarily developed skills, expressive capabilities, and nuanced social behaviors. This workshop examines the NUI field as a base for future work within a multidisciplinary environment. The hope of this workshop is to develop a series of themes and design practices which have the potential to act as a base for future collaboration. We encourage those interested to participate in this workshop. Participants are required submit a short abstract discussing their thoughts on this field, and how it can fit within their existing work. HCSNet will fund a number of travel grants of up to $500 to help cover the costs of travel and accommodation for participants from outside the Melbourne area. Ranking Web of Universities: July 2009 edition

The July edition of the Ranking Web of World Universities (http://www.webometrics.info) shows important news. Most of them are due to changes done to improve the academic impact of the open web contents and to reduce the geographical bias of search engines. As a result, the US universities still lead the Ranking (MIT with its huge Open Courseware is again the first, followed by Harvard, Stanford and Berkeley), but the digital gap with their European counterparts (Cambridge and Oxford are in the region’s top) has been reduced. Even more important, some of the developing countries institutions reach high ranks, especially in Latin America where the University of Sao Paulo (38th) and UNAM (44th) benefits from the increasingly interconnected Brazilian and Mexican academic webspaces. Several countries improves their performance including Taiwan and Saudi Arabia with strong web oriented strategies, Czech Republic (Charles), the leader for Eastern Europe, Spain (Complutense) and Portugal (Minho, Porto) with huge repositories and strong Open Access initiatives. Norway (NTNU, Oslo), Egypt could be also mentioned. On the other side, the underrated are headed by France, with a very fragmented system, Korea, whose student-oriented websites are frequently duplicated, New Zealand, India or Argentina. Africa is still monopolized by South African universities (Cape Town is the first, 405th), as well as Australian Universities are the best ranked for Oceania (Australian National University, 77th) Other well performing institutions include Cornell or Caltech in the USA, Tokyo (24th) Toronto (28th), Hong Kong (91st), or Peking (104th). On the contrary, in positions below expected we find Yale, Princeton, Saint Petersburg, Seoul and the Indian Institutes of Science or Technology. The Ethnography and Qualitative Research of Online Groups Special Issue (volume 4, number 2, 2011) of “Etnografia e Ricerca Qualitativa” (Ethnography and Qualitative Research) Edited By: Stefano De Paoli & Maurizio Teli Abstract due: 15 May 2010 (500 words) Online groups, also called "virtual worlds", "virtual communities", or “digital collectives”, are those social groups whose members’ interactions are mediated primarily by the Internet. Participation in these groups has a variety of purposes and takes place via a variety of technological platforms. These include, for instance, platforms for social networking (such as Facebook, Second Life and social networks in general), platforms that have a productive purpose for participants (such as projects for the development of Free and Open Source Software), or platforms whose goal is to provide entertainment or a pastime for users (for instance Multiplayer Online Games such as the Massive Multiplayer Online Games or Online Poker). Nowadays, the social relevance of this phenomenon has become quite clear in several areas. For example, social networks like Facebook or MySpace now count millions of users that interact online, with a variety of goals, practices and tools (Beer, 2008). The proliferation of socio-technical phenomena such as Wikipedia, Creative Commons and Free and Open Source Software has changed some of the traditional assumptions about organizational hierarchies and paid labour (Kelty, 2008). Or again, Online Games' virtual economies are tied to real economies, in ways that challenge traditional assumptions about property (Castronova, 2005). Social, cultural, economic, and technological dimensions are, therefore, closely intertwined in the phenomenon of Online Groups. In this special issue (volume 4, number 2, 2011) of “Etnografia e Ricerca Qualitativa” (Ethnography and Qualitative Research) we are looking for contributions with a strong empirical bias that can tackle this hybrid complexity and that specifically offer reflections and practical experiences for a discussion on the theoretical and methodological dimensions of the phenomenon. This involves reflecting on one or more of the following topics: Firstly, some reflections might focus on the theoretical dimension. Often the literature, in both the social sciences and economics, for example Benkler’s (2006) or von Hippel’s (2004) works, has associated the birth and proliferation of online groups with a process of democratization and the construction of a new democratic balance of power and knowledge. (Consider the case of Free and Open Source Software or the advent of Web 2.0 and User Generated Content.) However, this literature is often linked with individualistic approaches, the methodological dimension of which does not focus on the “fine grain” of social practices and on the power relationships these practices might imply. One of the goals of this special issue is therefore to stimulate a debate on how ethnographic or qualitative research in general can help to balance this optimistic view, in which "online" is seen as a place of pure democracy. Secondly, the research on online group interactions requires a discussion of and reflection on the assumptions of traditional qualitative and ethnographic research. Indeed, the researcher herself is required to take part in online interactions and to use the Internet to conduct the research. This consideration illustrates that there is an inherent reflexive element: the researcher studies a phenomenon that she is also contributing to identify. It is therefore important for researchers to reflect on the use in research of the same technologies and platforms used for online interactions. This includes, for instance, tools for collecting qualitative data, for analyzing data and also for the communication/dissemination of research results. Examples could be: the use of blogs or wikis as tools to keep and organize field notes or even to build a relationship with participants in the online groups themselves; the use of online resources (such as software tools) that can be used for data collection and analysis, for example extensions for the Firefox browser or web-based CAQDAS software; and the use of blogs, wikis and other platforms to disseminate research results, in this way contributing to the construction of online interactions. Finally, ethnographic and qualitative online research requires specific reflections on the ethical aspects of the research. For instance, the availability of archived material in a space that is neither public nor private, according to classical categories in the ethics of research, and whose authors are not always reachable, poses challenging problems. Indeed, often the user communications and interactions are public, in the sense that they are easily accessible by almost anyone through an Internet connection. This type of “sharing in a limited context” by users raises ethical questions for researchers, as the users' original purpose was not to provide “data” for researchers (Bakardjeva and Feenberg, 2001). Therefore, an approach that takes the situation into account should be used when discussing the status of public/private information in relation to Internet conversations and interactions (Teli, Pisanu, Hakken, 2007). In conclusion, we invite empirically grounded research papers that address one or more of the dimensions outlined above, but which may also expand them and include other aspects. We had originally listed April 28 as our notification date for all decisions. Unfortunately, we're having a bit of a delay for a couple of reasons-- first, the initial deadline for submissions was pushed back, giving reviewers less time to do the reviews, and our program chair, Torill Mortensen, less time to collate and make decisions based on those reviews. Second, this year we've had a large number of submissions that needed to be re-assigned at the last minute, because initial reviewers could not/did not complete their reviews. Please know that Torill is working intensely to make final decisions, and notices should be going out very soon. This book approaches these issues through anthropological research among 'teleworkers', people working via internet from their homes in rural Denmark. Through a rich ethnography of paid work as a cultural practice, and drawing on social science studies of knowledge, it develops a theory of cultural process and change, where particular attention is devoted to the materiality of internet use, and to situated experience, reflection, and agency. The study suggests that telework is mostly practiced informally, and that this form of flexible work is more prevalent than commonly assumed. Yet, whether these arrangements are 'new' or recombinants/re-presentations of extant things, it is very much the case that in many societies, those that would not have engaged with such arrangements in the past are, and that different sites of such arrangements are becoming easier to connect with each other. Thus, we are increasingly faced with the issue of having to navigate multiple places across and connected with the Internet. Unsurprisingly, those in commercial and other formal organizations are also making these connections too. This year we hope the workshop will tackle issues associated with the multi-sited nature of digital culture. However, as usual, we intend for the workshop to be multi-disciplinary in nature, broad in the approaches participants take and issues they cover. If your work is about any aspect of digital culture, this is the workshop for you! The following are thus only indicative of potential topics that could be raised: * What kinds of sites/spaces are being connected and why? * How does identity feature in multi-sitedness? * How does multi-sitedness feature in our knowledge and experiences of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity and disability? * What are the problems and benefits of sociotechnical convergence? * What roles are mobile and ubiquitous/pervasive computing technologies playing in multi-sitedness? * How are commercial and non-commercial artifacts, digital games/TV/Radio/newsprint for example, being situated within and across physical and virtual spaces? Following from the first two workshops we continue to see this workshop having three purposes. First, we seek to give voice and structure to existing digital media, ICT and technology related research which may not readily sit within conventionally accepted areas. Second, we wish to draw in research on new forms of digital technology, ICT, computing, organizing and social interactions. Third, we want to continue discussions regarding potential futures for ICT related research, which combine research as related to the evolving forms and functions of organizations and the changing boundaries and relations between these organizations and their social milieus. We seek abstracts (of up to 600 words) that focus upon an aspect of digital culture. We hope to have a special issue of a journal associated with the workshop, as in the past. A special issue of Information Technology and People will be published early in 2011 and this has attracted papers from the 2009 event. We would like to attract papers that address issues of online communities of practice, inquiry and interest created in the interest of political, educational, business, social and/or gaming pursuits, and with attention to how online community building and management contribute to success in the digital economy and society. At present, there is tremendous research interest in these topics, driven by the fact that these sociological phenomena are changing the way people work, play and socialize, and how they spend their time and money. Accordingly, billions of dollars are being spent by businesses and consumers on these technologies, and the rate of adoption has been phenomenal, while empirical and theoretical work on social and technical design, and economic and social outcomes lag behind. We call for empirical and theoretical papers that add to our understanding of the social, political, and economic landscape of communities and social networks at work, school, home, play and in society. FULL PAPERS JUNE 15, 2010 (note this is a *hard* deadline) Authors submit Full Papers to the Peer Review System, following the Author Instructions found on the HICSS web site (http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/) All papers must be submitted in double column publication format and limited to 10 pages including diagrams and references that conform to HICSS standards. Papers undergo blind review. HICSS papers must contain original material, and not be previously published, nor currently submitted elsewhere. You may submit a paper to only one Minitrack. Duplicate submissions may be rejected by any or all minitracks, without consultation with author. An individual may be listed as author/co-author on no more than 6 submitted papers. Track Chairs must approve any names added after submission. AUG 15, 2010 Acceptance notices are emailed to authors by the Review System. (Make sure your server accepts the address.) At least one author of each accepted paper must immediately make plans to attend the conference, including initiating fiscal, visa, or other travel guarantees. SEPT 15, 2010 Accepted authors submit Final Paper. At least one author of each paper should register by this date. This is the Early Registration fee deadline.
