Dear all We are pleased to announce the launch of a new refereed e-journal: "International Journal of Education and Development using Information and Communication Technology (IJEDICT)" located at http://ijedict.dec.uwi.edu/. Articles in the first issue will be published early in 2005. The journal is published on the WWW as an open resource journal, i.e., with free and open access to all, but it has the status of commercially published journals by having an International Editorial Board and academic peer-reviewed articles. The journal concentrates on ICT in education and development in hitherto less developed parts of the world, e.g., developing countries (especially small states), and rural and remote regions of developed countries. It has a research section for academic, peer-reviewed articles, and a "studies from the field" section for edited (but not peer reviewed) case studies/reports. There is no set deadline - articles are published as soon as they have been reviewed and copyedited. Applicants should hold a PhD in sociology or a related field, be able to demonstrate excellent research achievement, and have relevant teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The person appointed would be expected to contribute to the department?s dynamic, interdisciplinary research culture (6* RAE rating) (see http://www.comp.lancs.ac.uk/sociology/) Research The successful candidate will be expected to enhance further the creative research culture of the Department and of the Faculty. This will include organising research events, seminars, workshops and conferences; making bids individually and/or with colleagues for funded research; and attracting PhD students. Teaching The person appointed will teach on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the department and beyond, depending on their areas of expertise. Teaching obligations will comprise an appropriate mix of activities drawn from the following: · Contributing a 5-10 week block (10-20 lectures) to the first year Sociology course (Soc 101) in their area of expertise; · Devising and teaching a 10-20 week undergraduate option in the area of their research; · Devising and teaching a 10 week MA module in the area of their research; · Contributing to consortial core course teaching in the Department at undergraduate and Master?s Levels; · Contributing to the Social Science Faculty Training Programme for PhD students; · Attracting and supervising PhD students (optionally with a second supervisor) to successful completion. Administration The person appointed will be expected to take on administration as agreed with the Head of Department annually. This will involve working with colleagues, liaising with assistant staff, attending Departmental, Faculty and/or University Committees and contributing to relevant documentation. The Department of Sociology at Lancaster University The Department has a strong tradition of interdisciplinary, collaborative research. Current members have intellectual backgrounds in sociology, economics, politics, social anthropology and cultural studies, film studies and science and technology studies, and most have extensive interdisciplinary links across the University. The Department co-operates closely with a number of Institutes in the Faculty, particularly the Institute for Advanced Studies, the Institute for Women?s Studies and the Institute for Cultural Research, and the Institute for Environmental Philosophy and Public Policy. The Centre for Science Studies is also administered from within the Sociology Department. Recent appointments have included researchers from the US, the UK, Canada, India and Denmark. Staff in the Department publish on a wide range of interdisciplinary topics, including: * political economy, the state, class structures * mobilities and spatialities * social theory, globalisation, time/space and materiality * consumption, leisure and tourism * ethnicity, diaspora, post-colonialism and multi-culturalism * culture and identity * gender and sexualities * sociology of science, technology and the environment * feminist science studies * the body, medicine and health, and new reproductive technologies * film and media * organisations, computer supported cooperative work, technology studies The Sociology Department offers the major degree, BA Sociology, and combined BA degrees: Sociology with Criminology, Educational Studies, Geography, Philosophy, Politics, Religious Studies, Social History, Film, and Organisation, Work & Technology. To save or not to save? Preserving our Online Heritage. The preservation of contemporary networked art works presents an enormous challenge to collectors and museums, most of whom are still attempting to fit these diverse practices into their rationales and exhibition strategies. Unfortunately acquisition and conservation measures are sparse, despite the plethora of entertaining challenging and innovative online works produced over the past decade. However the is hope. Some of the leaders in preservation of internet art are not in fact art institutions, but libraries and internet archival projects, for whom collection, archiving and preservation is a routine matter. As more of their collections become digital, they have been actively addressing issues of storage, migration and emulation. This month we are joined by a panel of International experts from the archival field: Nancy McGovern, Digital Preservation Officer at Cornell University Library; Margaret Phillips, Paul Koerbin and Gerard Clifton from the PANDORA internet archive and PADI gateway at the National Library of Australia; Michele Kimpton of the Internet Archive with its consultant sage the WayBack Machine; Sharmin (Tinni) Choudhury, the software engineer for PANIC digital preservation project; Meta data standards expert Dr Simon Pockley from Deakin University; and Luciana Duranti (UBC), Yvette Hackett and Jim Suderman from InterPARES 2, Canada. We will also be joined by those concerned specifically with net art: Kevin McGarry from Rhizome Artbase, the worlds largest collection of networked media with over 1440 net.art works; and artist Graham Crawford, who curated two of Australia¹s earliest net art shows Tool 1 and Tool 2.0b which are no longer online. Hello all, Does anyone know why some websites use very small Arial type fonts? I asked a colleague and he said it was so as to get as much information as possible on a page. Hi there...I just happened to join up as you were talking about small fonts. For what it's worth, I design websites in flash and often use pixel fonts, which show up nice and sharp in flash. Unfortunately, the pixel fonts are often 8 pt. in order to fit to the pixels correctly. It is certainly a difficult choice to make, but the pixel fonts don't blur the way other fonts might. I also notice that these small fonts show up in HTML pages and I wonder if they are not sort of attempting to look like flash sites? Kandace

Hello AoIR list, I'm at work on a MA thesis, and I'm searching for some literature on the development of social codes around new technologies, specifically technologies of communication. Particularly I'm looking for some historic context--how did/do things like "phone manners" evolve? How do we learn what's "rude" or "polite"? How did we decide that all caps in email means "yelling"? How localized is the development of these kinds of rules or codes? And are these codes constantly in flux or do they ever stabilize? Any resources or places to look would be most helpful. A blatant plug for my own work, but I've co-authored a paper about uses of mobile phones in the context of the historical development of notions of the individual. It talks about politeness in relation to morality and puts some historical context around perceptions of 'crudeness' in mobile usage, and speaks to the issue of things always being in 'flux' (or not...). Someone responded to Amanda's request for style in then-new technologies with a reference to an article that "M. Martin" wrote. I recall that is "Michele Martin" who received a PhD from the Department of Sociology, University of Toronto about 20 years ago. You can look up the diss. at UMI. I have lost track of Michele, alas. Somehow I find it cognitively hard to think of Amanda Lenhart as a newbie master's students, after all the great Pew Internet reports she's written!
