Non-software uses of GitHub

I’m looking for GitHub repositories that are used for things other than software, especially where users are actively collaborating rather than just putting together static collections. So far, we have found a few books being written, some musical transcriptions being error-checked, and some policy documents maintained online. Does anyone know of any examples of these or other categories? Any pointers much appreciated. Happy to share what we find with anyone interested. internet studies book list

Hi all — I emailed the list earlier in the year asking if anyone knew of any bibliographies of 1) books, specifically 2) in the field of Internet Studies, broadly defined. The reason for my question was I’m asking my students to write a book review of a monograph in the field for my class <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rshp8enFUQ2_vfuSHN88twwQXxXiDRYx_NTPU2i…> this spring, and wanted to give them a resource so they could find something in their interest area. A few people responded asking me to let them know if I found anything, but I didn’t, nor could my departmental librarian. There are plenty of syllabi for a topic area across many forms of scholarship (articles, books, films, etc), but nothing I could find for books, specifically. So my TA and I built a Google Form <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf_WaVIdg9Rh--nodpMWYKpLSj03zxouh5…> to help us make one. If you enter in the ISBN number of a book, it queries the Google Books API and populates the results to a public spreadsheet here <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ik83LPyjjqQLfWim53CEObnXdiVDqSkGJ0l…>. It pulls in the book description (from the publisher) and the subject areas (from the LoC), so that it is (reasonably) searchable. My TA and I just started entering in some books from our syllabus and some books that popped into our head, but I wanted to send it out to AoIR in case anyone here wants to contribute or use the list. If you want to contribute — please do! We’ve tried to make it as easy as possible, and you should definitely blast your own books into here, or those of friends, or whatever. It’s a work in progress and we’ll be figuring it out as we go along but hopefully it’s a helpful resource for someone (beyond just my students this term). Best, — Chris

Call for or Papers: Symposium on Misinformation and Global Communication

Online Media and Global Communication Call for or Papers: Symposium on Misinformation and Global Communication Digital media technology has accelerated the spread of false or misleading information, particularly amid the pandemic of COVID-19, making it a global social concern and an emerging research topic for various social science disciplines. To date, a variety of scholarship has investigated the various forms of misinformation, their spreading patterns, methods of detection and dispelling, the causes and effects of misinformation, etc. However, more research is still needed to address the global dissemination of misinformation. We are soliciting extended abstracts or full papers for a variety of presentations at our symposium, “Misinformation and Global Communication,” to be held on March 12, 2022, in Shanghai. The symposium will take a hybrid format, consisting of in-person and virtual meetings. We welcome innovative and original research proposals addressing the theme of our symposium from all disciplines, methodologies, and professions, including case studies, quantitative and qualitative research, data and network science, etc. Some possible topics include but are not limited to: * Misinformation, disinformation, and fake news on social media * COVID-19 misinformation * The effects of misinformation on audience * Comparative Study on fake news * Fact-checking * New methodologies to study misinformation * The ethic of misinformation * Digital literacy on misinformation * Misinformation inventions * The cultural implications of misinformation * Other related topics Please submit an abstract or research proposal with a minimum of 500 words for your presentation. Decisions for the conference presentation will be communicated on February 25, 2022. High-quality articles will be selected to present at our symposium “Misinformation and Global Communication,” co-sponsored by the School of Journalism and Communication at Shanghai International Studies University, Center for Global Public Opinion of China, and the Online Media and Global Communication (OMGC) journal. OMGC is a new free open-access English language referred journal published quarterly by De Gruyter and sponsored by Shanghai International Studies University. It aims to publish high quality, innovative and original research on global communication, especially in the use of global online media platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, Weibo, WeChat, Wikipedia, websites, blogs, etc., in an effort to make theoretical contributions under the contextual scenarios of and based on practices of online media and global communication, particularly in but not limited to the Global South. Selected papers from the symposium will be published in Online Media and Global Communication after peer review.

Platform Data Access Report

Dear colleagues, Earlier today the European Digital Media Observatory's Working Group on Platform-to-Researcher Data Access published its official report <https://edmo.eu/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Report-of-the-European-Digital-M…> . The multi-stakeholder group has been hard at work for the last year. Our main charge was to draft a Code of Conduct under Article 40 of the GDPR that would facilitate better access to data for independent researchers. This report contains that draft Code. Among other things, the draft Code lays out a framework for assessing the level of risk involved in accessing and conducting research with different types of platform data. It then lays out a number of safeguards that can be put in place to mitigate different levels of risks--helping to promote research that is ethical and responsible. Getting to this point has entailed tremendously hard work by everyone involved, and, as the report itself notes, the work is far from over. But publishing the report and draft Code represent a major step forward. Though certain requirements are necessarily tied to specifications under the GDPR, the general principles and proposed solutions the report offers are instructive well beyond the European context. Please feel free to circulate widely. Call for Participation: Workshop on Radical Approaches to Platform Governance (Dublin, Nov. 1 ) *See full CfP for background context + more detail [* https://digitalpolicy.ie/ucd-centre-for-digital-policy-is-co-organising-a-w… ] This workshop seeks to bring together researchers interested in critically interrogating various aspects of the contemporary political economy of platforms, with a special emphasis on theoretical and conceptual approaches that provide a potentially radical challenge to understanding, or re-imagining, the current academic discourse and policy status quo. In particular, we are looking to highlight (a) critically oriented perspectives to understanding the platform economy as it is (‘how we got here’); as well as (b) forward looking, radical, utopian visions of alternative platform governance futures might look like. We’re especially interested in bringing together scholars with an interest, or background, in applying some of the following perspectives on digital platforms: - Critical political economy, including but not limited to Marxist approaches - Critical race theory, critical theories of race; Black Studies; the black radical tradition - Indigenous political philosophy and political economy - Post-colonial and de-colonial theories; dependency theory; world-systems thinking - Critical gender and sexuality studies; trans studies; radical and intersectional feminism - Disability studies - Abolitionism, transformative justice, restorative justice - Other radical intellectual traditions *Where & When*: The workshop will be held as an all-day satellite workshop on November 1, before the kick-off of the Association of Internet Researchers conference in Dublin, Ireland. We are very grateful to University College Dublin, which has given us access to a fantastic venue: the Museum of Literature Ireland. We are currently planning + hoping to hold this as an in-person event; we may explore hybrid or online components if there is enough interest. *Workshop Submissions & Participation: *We welcome 500-word abstracts from interested participants in the workshop. Two types of submission are possible: presentations (which will be clustered together in panels with 15-20 minute talks), or papers (which will be given their own session and assigned a discussant for closer feedback and workshopping). Work at all stages of development is welcome for either format, although we ask that paper presenters commit to having a draft paper that they can circulate before the workshop. We are additionally exploring options for potential special-issue outputs for accepted papers. Individuals interested in attending and contributing to the discussions, but not necessarily in presenting their work, may submit a short statement of interest in lieu of an abstract.
