Apologies for cross-posting CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS Conditions of Mediation: Phenomenological Approaches to Media, Technology and Communication Editors: Tim Markham and Scott Rodgers In June 2013, the ICA preconference Conditions of Mediation (see http://conditionsofmediation.wordpress.com for further information) brought together scholars from a wide range of perspectives – including audience studies, political theory, metaphysics, media archaeology, software studies, science and technology studies, cultural geography and urban studies – to critically reflect on both the merits and limits of phenomenological approaches for understanding media, in philosophical, theoretical, political and empirical terms. Inspired by this very successful conference, we are now preparing a proposal for an edited book under the same title. The proposed format of the book is to have a substantive introduction, two ‘dialogues’ involving Graham Harman, Lisa Parks, Paddy Scannell, Shaun Moores, Nick Couldry and David Berry (based on their keynote papers), and 10-12 short paper chapters of 4000 words (excluding bibliography). We are therefore issuing an Open Call for Chapter Proposals. If you are interested in contributing a chapter to this edited book, please send a chapter title and 400 word abstract by no later than 15 September 2013 to Scott Rodgers at s.rodgers(a)bbk.ac.uk. Straightforward solutions are rarely on offer as the bringing together of different philosophies requires the negotiation of acceptance, compromise, or submission (Tsing 2004). This friction can be disruptive, productive, or both, and it may contribute discord or harmony. In this special issue, we seek submissions that respond to the idea that frictions between technologies and activists may ultimately enhance the ability of activists to take more control of their projects, create new ethical spaces and subvert technologies, just as it may also result in tension, conflict and hostility. By dwelling in between and within these frictions and entanglements – through strategic and tactical media discourses as well as the very concept of an activist politics within technology – this special issue will elucidate the context-specific nature, constraints and possibilities of the digital environments that are co-habited by activists from proximate fields including social movements, human rights, ecological and green movements, international development, community arts and cultural development. Past issues of the Fibreculture Journal have examined activist philosophies from angles such as social justice and networked organisational forms, communication rights and net neutrality debates, and the push back against precarious new media labour. Our issue extends this work by revealing the conflicting debates that surround activist philosophies of technology. Submissions are sought that engage specifically with the ethics, rationales and methods adopted by activists to justify selecting, building, using, promoting or rejecting specific technologies. We also encourage work that considers the ways in which these negotiations speak to broader mythologies and tensions embedded within digital culture – between openness and control; political consistency and popular appeal; appropriateness, usability and availability. We invite responses to these provocations from activists, practitioners and academics. Critiques, case studies, and multimedia proposals will be considered for inclusion. Dear all, I head a research project on the Internet and social movement activism. More specifically, we are doing a research on the uses of different Internet platforms by the student movement in Chile. We are currently setting up the project webpage, and as soon as it is ready I will let you know, so those of you who might be interested can access more detailed information on the project, including preliminary results. One of the main goals of our project is to analyze how the uses of these platforms have changed through time, more specifically between the beginning of 2011 and the end of 2013. We are also interested in understanding the differences in uses of the various social network sites (for deliberation, information sharing, protest coordination, etc.), and in better understanding their impacts on the relationship between the leadership and the students in general. The reason for this message is that we are struggling to define a research strategy to gather Facebook data (fanpages, groups and events). So far we have been able to do social network analysis with Twitter data, and we have also been looking into YouTube and the use of webpages and blogs. We are also beginning to do content analysis with posts (using Nvivo). About Facebook, we are wondering if any of you have had experience using netvizz. We want to get data on how well connected the fanpages of the students´ organizations are among themselves, and other types of social network data. However, netvizz limits the access to the past 999 posts, which is a serious limitation to us, because, as explained above, we are interested in going back to 2011. Would you know of other options, besides netvizz? Any other tips? I am very grateful for your help! The world’s population is rapidly urbanizing. By 2005, the world’s population had increased to 6.5 billion, with about 50% living in cities. By 2025, UN projections show that the world population is expected to exceed 9 billion with roughly 75% expected to live in cities. This rapid urbanization is continuing to put tremendous pressure on traditional urban infrastructures, such as roads, water, and energy, and on societal institutions. This urbanization challenges require new approaches that will transform modern cities to comfortable, economically successful, and environmentally responsible habitats. We are also seeing a rapid rise in the connection and usage of billions of low-end and affordable smart devices to the Internet, i.e. the Internet of Things, and witnessing the expansion of the Web into more areas of our personal lives. These trends make possible a new generation of smart city applications and services, with new smart city applications emerging as more data from different sources (e.g. from utility services, transport services, environmental data, and from social sensing) become available. These smart city data are large in volume, multi-modal, vary in quality, formats, and representation forms. These data need to be processed, aggregated, and higher-level abstractions need to be created from these data to make them suitable for the event processing and , knowledge extraction methods that enable intelligent applications and services for smart city platforms. Semantic Web technologies and Linked Data together with data analytics solutions play a key role in providing inter-operability, association analysis, information and knowledge extractions, and reasoning about trust, privacy, provenance, and security in smart city frameworks. Scope and Objectives This workshop will explore the interfaces between the Web, the Web of Data, and the City Smart environment. It will further explore how the Web, and the intelligences built on top of, and around the Web, can make the notion of the Smart Connected City possible and realizable. The workshop aims to gather researchers, city departments, service providers, application developers, entrepreneurs, and citizens to present and debate Semantic Web technologies, Linked Data and data analytics and evaluations for smart city applications as well as impact of user engagements and social networks. The workshop will also focus on related standardization activities in W3C, IEEE and ETSI. David Marshall, Christopher Moore, and Kim Barbour In the contemporary moment where aspects of our lives are rendered visible for display, circulation and exchange via our involvement in online cultures, investigating the concept of persona and the production of the networked self is critical to understanding the patterns and flows of everyday and extraordinary public identities. Persona is usually perceived as a mask of identity, something that clouds and occludes a truer or raw version of ourselves, or thought of in a Goffman-like way as a form of "role-playing" and "impression management". The production of persona can therefore be seen as something strategic, something essential to the modern experience, and ultimately something that is filled with affect and agency as the individual both constructs and inhabits these public identity formations. Persona inhabits a space between the fictive and the real and has been explored as constitutive of what it means to be human/citizen (Cicero), what constitutes consistency of character (literary persona), what allows a public figure to negotiate a surveilled life (celebrity persona or an artistic persona), and even what kind of avatar/identity and presentation of the self is presented in play and the broader structures of social interaction and participation in game cultures (gamer persona) and fandoms. CALL FOR PAPERS, WORKSHOPS, PROJECT SHOWCASES & CALL FOR SMARTPHONE, MOBILE AND POCKET CAMERA FILMS The MINA Mobile Creativity and Innovation Symposium and the International Mobile Innovation Screening provide a platform for filmmakers, artists, designers, researchers, educators and industry professionals to debate the prospect of wireless, mobile and ubiquitous technologies in art and design, education, and the creative industries and on-going development of mobile social media, mobile technologies, mobile production and mobile aesthetics. This year, the fourth MINA Symposium edition is centred around the question: What are current, potential and inspiring mobile opportunities for the future of universities, of the private sector, of individuals and digital communities? and will seek to answer this question through presentations of papers, panels discussions, workshops, performances and mobile screenings. MINA invites any submission relating, but not limited to the following: � MOBILE & AESTHETIC � MOBILE & COMMUNITIES � MOBILE & HYBRID ART � MOBILE & INTERACTIVITY � MOBILE & MARKETING � MOBILE & PEDAGOGY � MOBILE & MEDIA PRODUCTION � MOBILE & SOUND � MOBILE & SPACE � MOBILE & STORY-TELLING Selected papers will be published in the Creative Technologies journal - Special MobileEdition. FORMAT Papers and pre-constituted panels can be delivered in-situ and via live web/video-broadcast. A. For each PAPER submission, please submit: - a proposal / abstract of approximately 300 words, including the title - a brief biographical (100 words maximum) per author(s) The paper presentation should be planned around 20 min, plus 10 min Q&A B. For each PANEL / WORKSHOP / PERFORMANCE proposals, please submit: - name of at least three people to form a panel - a proposal / abstract of approximately 300 words, including the title - any technical requirement, if not standard (computer, Internet, video projector, microphone) - each panel / workshop member brief biographical (100 words maximum), including their personal contact information The panel discussion should be planned around 30 - 40 minute, the workshop and performance format is flexible. --------- The International Mobile Innovation Screening 2014 will showcase short films produced on and with smartphones, mobile and pocket cameras. In its 4th edition the MINA showcase will include micro-movies and micro-formats (Vine, Vyclone and live streaming apps), travel, mobility and adventure films (i.e. sports or drone videos) including projects realised with GoPro cameras. Selected mobile films will be featured in the MINA showreel, MINA DVD, MINA eBook and MINA's international partner festivals.
