Dear All, I would like to ask for some advice on visual teaching materials. I am soon to teach ma research stream on 'Internet Governance & Human Rights' for final year JD students at Melbourne Law School. Since I was free to design the course and materials, I thought it would be nice to include some visuals - short videos, interviews, exciting prezis - anything else that would be stimulating and of importance to such course. Anything suggestions either generally on Internet Governance, or digital rights, or Internet & Democracy would be highly appreciated! Hi All, I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice (and useful reading ) on tracking Memes. Specifically, I am wondering if there is a way I can take a meme and look at how it has spread and been shared on different social media? I wouldn’t be doing it in real time, more looking back at significant events and how political memes transcended networks and flowed through social media. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Greetings, AoIR - It’s my great pleasure to announce the following event and related CFP. On December 6-7 2017, UCLA’s Department of Information Studies, part of the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, welcomes participants to a two-day conference on commercial content moderation (CCM) of user-generated social media material. At All Things in Moderation: The People, Practices and Politics of Online Content Review – Human and Machine we will offer a new forum bringing together those interested in the multiple challenges related to CCM, and to content moderation of all kinds. The goal of this foundational event is to map the current landscape from a number of perspectives. During these two days, scholars, students, journalists, policy makers and CCM workers will share their insights in order to generate a discussion about the challenges, methodologies and frameworks that are necessary to integrate a comprehensive, academic study of commercial content moderation, other kinds of online moderation, and its outcomes and implications into existing paradigms in labor studies, information studies, computing and internet history, public policy, internet governance and media studies, to name but a few. Beyond analyzing the contemporary case of CCM across the social media and other digital industries, we anticipate that All Things in Moderation will require a look to the past and to other media sectors, as well as a gaze into the future, to anticipate the problems related to CCM and to our social media-reliant world, and to collectively think about solutions. We are building a global community of junior scholars within AoIR - join us at AoIR 2017 - Tartu!! When: October 18th, AoIR 2017 preconference afternoon session Audience: This workshop is geared toward early career scholars who have their terminal degree and are working toward establishing themselves in a scholarly career. We have worked to create a workshop that is reflective of AoIR's international membership and the different type of academic and research institutions represented. (Please note: Students should apply to the Doctoral Colloquium). Goals: 1) Provide a space for the next generation of AoIR scholars to start building strong ties with each other, more established researchers, and the AoIR community. 2) To promote understanding of the breadth of academic work, including our shared experiences and differences. 3) Connect with established academics to learn strategies for forwarding our careers. 4) Gain insight into how to formulate similar workshops in future years that support the need for mentoring early scholars in the AoIR community. The ADBIS conferences provide an international platform for the presentation of research on database theory, development of advanced DBMS technologies, and their advanced applications. The 21st edition of the conference will be held in Nicosia, Cyprus. Nicosia (or Leukosia) is the largest city on the island of Cyprus. It is the capital and seat of the government of the Republic of Cyprus, and as such is the farthest south-east of all EU member states' capitals. Apart from its legislative and administrative functions, Nicosia has established itself as the island's financial capital and its main international business centre. It is also a centre of culture in Cyprus. The Cyprus Museum in Nicosia is the largest and oldest archaeological museum in Cyprus. In the beautiful old city of Nicosia, the Ethnological Museum is the most important example of urban architecture of the last century of Ottoman domination which survives in old Nicosia. The conference venue is the well known 5* hotel, Hilton Cyprus Hotel. Hilton Cyprus is the only five-star hotel in Nicosia and counts 40 years of operation. Just 35 minutes from Larnaca International Airport, 1 hour and 36 minutes from Paphos International Airport and only 10 minutes walking distance from the city centre, shopping and entertainment areas; conveniently located next to the business district. The hotel's guest facilities and services include a Business Centre, hairdresser & barber, bookshop, bank, taxi and car-hire services and free car-parking facilities. The program of ADBIS 2017 includes keynotes, research papers, thematic workshops, and a Doctoral Consortium. The conference attracted 107 paper submissions from 38 countries from many continents. After rigorous reviewing by the Program Committee, the 26 papers included in the LNCS proceedings volume were accepted as full contributions, making an acceptance rate of 24%. Springer sponsored the ADBIS 2017 best paper award. Furthermore, the Program Committee selected 12 more papers as short contributions. Besides the main conference event, ADBIS 2017 features four workshops (BigNovelTI, AMSD, SW4CH and DaS) and a Doctoral Consortium as Satellite Events. The four workshops have accepted 25 papers and the DC has accepted 3 papers. Cultures of Capitalism Cultural Studies Association of Australasia Conference 2017 December 6-8 Massey University, Wellington Campus, Aotearoa New Zealand Keynote Speakers: Professor Patricia Hill Collins (University of Maryland), Professor Jodi Dean (Hobart and William Smith Colleges), Professor Jeremy Gilbert (University of East London), Professor Wendy Larner (University of Victoria, Wellington). The relationship between capital and culture is hotly contested. On the one hand, dominant political discourses valorise "culture" as the solution for ailing communities, cities and industries. Discourses of neo-liberal globalization claim that, in the face of mass migration, war and climate change, communities equipped with the "right" culture will adapt and endure, while others will be left behind; discourses of urban planning celebrate culture as the key to revitalising municipal economies through creativity and social participation; and discourses of post-industrial work, parsing radical shifts in the manufacturing sector, champion cultural, intellectual and creative labour as the paradigm for new forms of work. On the other, a range of critical voices, many of them associated with Cultural Studies, offer a decidedly less rosy vision of the relationship between culture and emergent capitalist formations. For these critics, nascent technologies of capital have led to a renewed reification and exploitation of racialised, sexualised, and classed populations, even as newly precarious conditions of labour give rise to affective economies marked by depression, antagonism and the "crisis ordinary." The 2017 Cultural Studies Association of Australasia conference will focus on the work that cultures do in constructing, contesting, and constituting new capital formations. While the "culture industry" critique cast culture as the opiate through which economic dominance is propagated, cultures can potentially mediate economic conditions in multiple and heterogeneous ways. This conference invites contributions that explore these mediations. In doing so, we return to one of the key concerns of early cultural studies: to make sense of the mutually-determining relation between culture and its capitalist context. If, following Stuart Hall, we understand 'culture' as the production of meaning through language and representation, what are the modes of communication through which capitalism/s are created? How are capitalism/s materialised in different spaces? How is it embodied in different identities and communities? What is the role of the economy in shaping the possibilities for culture? What is the role of Cultural Studies as critical praxis in the present economic time? Wiggins (Webster Vienna Private University, Austria) In direct response to the rise in fake news as a socio-cultural and political phenomenon, this article presents an analysis of the factors that may help to explain the reception of fake news. In addition, recent pronouncements made by the Trump White House seem to challenge the nature of an objective truth. An immersive narratology emphasizes that different universes of discourse can intermingle and overlap, with fact and fiction becoming difficult to distinguish in our increasingly mediated lives. A tenable definition of fake news is offered prior to exploring historical antecedents of fake news. Persuasion, construction, immersion, distribution, and polarization represent the core factors that demystify the reception of fake news regardless as to whether an individual believes a story. A concluding discussion offers a critical evaluation of the potential of fake news to augment the news media landscape in the coming years. Blast Theory's A Machine to See With (2010) is a pervasive fictional experience that enables users, through the technology of their mobile phone, to become immersed within a fictional crime scenario across a real geographical setting. Dennis Del Favero's art project, Scenario (2011), by contrast, is an interactive and immersive story that takes place in a 360-degree digital cinematic space called an AVIE (Advanced Visualization and Interaction Environment). This immersive world is a mixed reality environment, a meeting place where five real users and ten digital screen characters converge and interact through the technology of motion sensing. Participants are virtually wired into the immersive world through the performance of their movement. This article investigates some of these assumptions, via an analysis of an undertheorised aspect of VR that has emerged in recent years – the 360° film. It argues that 360° film represents a much more important aspect of VR than has been previously recognised. In so doing, the article establishes this medium as an important field of study, and argues that ultimately, it will be the commercial infrastructure for this content which will define the parameters of immersive storytelling.
