For the last five years I've been using Howard Rheingold's *Net Smart: How To Thrive Online* (2012). It's been great because it introduces lots of important ideas in the context of learning how to be a more informed and capable netizen. For example, how to be mindful, skeptical, and make use of the power of social networks. Five years on, though, the book is a bit dated (e.g., discussion of the del.icio.us social bookmarking site). I am thinking I should look for alternatives. I don't think I'll be able to find a single book to replace it, but I hope to find a more current reading or two (perhaps chapters from different books) that cover similar ground. I welcome recommendations! "Attention," ch=1 : multi-tasking; executive control; intention & mindfulness when online - Alex Soojung-Kim Pang, *The Distraction Addiction* (2013). Excellent, but a whole book rather than a chapter or two. This is an opportunity for “smart city” scholars based in the United States… (with apologies to those based outside the US) *Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in the* *“Social and Environmental Implications of Smart Cities*” *at the University of Calgary, Canada* The University of Calgary’s Urban Studies Program seeks a Fulbright Canada scholar who will join a collaborative, comparative, interdisciplinary research project on the “Social and Environmental Implications of Smart Cities.” Urban Studies is an interdisciplinary program, administratively housed in the Department of Geography in the Faculty of Arts. The disciplinary specialization of the Fulbright scholar is open, but should entail expertise in the social sciences or humanities relevant to understanding the development and governance of socio-technical systems. The Fulbright scholar will have the opportunity to work with members of the Smart Cities Research Group as well as the Urban Studies Research Group, including faculty members from the Departments of Anthropology-Archaeology, Geography, History, Political Science, and Sociology as well as the Faculties of Business, Environmental Design, Medicine, and Social Work. New book: Discourse and Identity on Facebook

Dear colleagues, I am pleased to announce the publication of my book 'Discourse and Identity on Facebook' (Bloomsbury, 2017). With a focus on Facebook, one of the most widely-used online social network sites, this book brings together ideas and concepts related to language online, multimodality, and identity through five topical issues. These include place, time, profession and education, stance-taking, and privacy. The book features a discourse-centred online ethnography that provides authentic verbal and multimodal Facebook posts in both Greek and English. These are complemented with insights from interviews with Facebook participants. The examples bring to life various engaging instances of self- and other-presentation on Facebook identifying the ways in which users can: - locate themselves in terms of place and time; - announce activities, share and broaden their expertise and buttress solidarity among colleagues and fellow students; - communicate emotions, tastes, thoughts, opinions and assessments; - control the flow of textual information on their Facebook profiles to secure their privacy. Focusing on discourse manifestations of identity, this book also shows how Facebook can function as a space for vernacular literacy practices, a cilo of relationships, a digital memory bank, a research tool, a knowledge forum, a cardiograph of a society, and a grassroots channel. Dear Colleagues, Just a reminder that proposals for our edited collection, Netflix at the Nexus, are due July 15. Call for Proposals *Netflix at the Nexus:* *Content, Practice, and Production in the Age of Streaming Television* Netflix’s meteoric rise as an online content provider has been well documented and much debated in the popular press and in academic circles. It has been praised as the future of television (Auletta, 2014) and as “the most feared force in Hollywood” (Villarreal & James, 2016), while also decried as the end of “TV’s Golden Age” and blamed for ushering in an era where “TV shows may be briefer, lower-budget and filled with the kind of product-placement ads that audiences hate and advertisers pay for” (Thielman, 2016). Interestingly though, amongst the academic inquiry thus far, much of this research has dealt primarily with the algorithmic culture and nature of Netflix (Hallinan & Striphas, 2016; Gomez-Uribe & Hunt, 2016; Amatriain, 2013), binge watching (Jenner, 2015, 2016; Pittman, & Sheehan, 2015), engagement, (Groshek, & Krongard, 2016; Matrix, 2014); and the future of television, (Auletta, 2014). The editors seek contributions to this collection that will broaden this discussion greatly, focusing on Netflix in three specific ways: · *platform* - How does the nature of Netflix streaming change our relationship to media? How does Netflix’s interface design impact media consumption? How does Netflix change our media consumption in mobile contexts? What are the cultural implications of Netflix’s business model? · *content* – What kind of content does Netflix privilege? How does the streaming model change serialized programming? What are these effects on narrative? Does Netflix’s streaming model prelude a more diverse offering for consumers interested in “quality TV?” Do representations in Netflix offerings differ from traditional broadcast programming? Is there a “Netflix genre,” shows produced by Netflix can be recognized as such? · *viewer* *practices* – What kind of viewing practices does Netflix encourage? What is the nature of viewer discourse surrounding binging and other streaming viewing practices? How do fans discuss and build community around Netflix programs? How do fans incorporate social media into their viewing habits? Hello, I’m currently working on stance detection on social media, and I’m looking for datasets to evaluate my model. I have several datasets of tweets concerning political events, but I would like to also consider other platforms.
