Intended to support research projects at the boundaries between the Humanities (broadly conceived) and other disciplines, the fellowship combines direct development of public facing web resources and academic research and publication. The post holder is expected to create a unified web-portal to house SHL project outputs in collaboration with other research and academic staff. The purpose of the portal will be to present and express the insights that result from SHL research work, and to pursue innovative strategies for online presentation of research results. The post will also feed expertise and knowledge back in to SHL practises to further develop capacity for innovative and cutting edge presentation of research. The portal will employ novel visual and interactive approaches to presenting projects. The post will be physically based in the schools of Engineering and Informatics and History, Art History and Philosophy, and the postholder will also work with the Library and ITS to ensure resources developed in the lab can be securely hosted by the University. The successful candidate will be familiar with web design, internet architecture, data management; be able to write modular front-end and back-end code, and have expertise in data visualization technologies. They will also possess basic project management skills. They will be confident in producing projects and sites to completion and publication. Candidates will be expected to proficient in the following: - front-end web technologies (CSS3, HTML5 and modern javascript) - single page application frameworks (such as angular, react or similar) - data visualisation technologies such as D3.js - back-end web application frameworks (such as, meteor or django), and to select one appropriate for the portal. The person appointed will work with both the SHL team and associated academics to produce high quality digital and online research projects. They will work within a lively and intellectually vibrant research programme to help deliver a new vision of the humanities – as a field with digital resources and critiques at its heart. Machine Learning and Interventions as Tools to Mitigate Online Hate Speech in Political Campaigns * * * Oct 18th, 9 am - 12:30 pm Dorpat Convention Centre, Tartu, Estonia Discriminating, hateful speech online, often targeting specific groups and minorities, has become a pressing problem in the societies. Hateful speech is a form of verbal violence that creates enemities, silences debates, and marginalizes individuals and groups from participation online. What is challenging is that ‘hate speech’ has come to mean a variety of speech acts and other ill-behaviours online, ranging from penal criminal acts to speech which is uncivil and disturbing, but yet to be tolerated. This definitional difficulty is further abused in claims that any limitations of hate speech endanger people’s right to freedom of expression. Hate speech has been criminalized in many countries and major Internet companies also engage in efforts to limit it. While many social media platforms allow users to flag content as hate speech for moderation purposes, no official follow-up actions take place. Furthermore, the automatic identification of hate speech is limited by lacking tools. * Pre-conference workshop aim and content * The aim of the workshop is to facilitate the development of tools and processes how the academic community could run interventions which aim to decrease the toxicity in the online space. We will provide participants a kick-start with computational tools for hate speech recognition. We will also discuss and reflect the challenges of such interventions and examine the opportunities and problems of deploying such systems. Our own experiences – which we reflect in the workshop – emerge from a project where the social media activity of candidates was monitored during the Finnish municipal election campaigns in April 2017. The workshop will follow an interactive style using both online and offline tools to facilitate discussion. Call for Proposals: Composition as Big Data Computational analysis of big data has changed the way information is processed. Corporations analyze patterns in what people buy, how far they run, where they spend their time; they quantify habits to create more effective advertisements and cross-promotions. In academe, humanities scholars are using computational analysis to identify patterns in literary texts, historical documents, image archives, and sound, all of which has added to the body of knowledge in humanities theory and methodology. Meanwhile, many institutions and writing programs are adopting learning management systems that may digitally archive hundreds – if not thousands or tens of thousands – of student compositions from across levels and disciplines. What is our responsibility, and what is the potential, in harnessing big-data methods as composition researchers, teachers, and administrators? Composition and rhetoric scholars have begun to adopt corpus-based computational analysis both to better understand the field as a whole – through the rhetoric of job postings (Lauer), professional journals (Mueller; Almjeld et al), and dissertation records (Miller; Gatta) – and to research student compositions, the teaching of which is the primary job of most composition and rhetoric scholars. Through data-driven studies of student entrance exams (Aull), citation practices (Jamieson and Moore Howard), revision practices (Moxley), and acknowledgment of counterarguments (Lancaster), scholars have found patterns that distinguish student writing from published academic writing, suggesting areas to target for instruction. This edited collection will model and reflect on the research made possible by high-capacity data storage and computation, either alone or in conjunction with close reading and evaluation in context. Authors are invited to submit abstracts for chapters that focus on the rhetoric, methods, and findings of recent large-scale data studies of writing. We are especially interested in contributions that include replicable practices and/or detailed descriptions of method, with an eye toward graduate-level research, teaching, or administrative applications in the intersecting fields of digital humanities, linguistics, and composition. The following list of topics and questions is not exhaustive, but suggestive, illustrating the range of issues to be taken up: - Data Capture and the Captivation of Data - When we say “big data” in composition what do we mean? What datasets are available, promising, or already producing insight? - What new questions do these datasets allow us to ask or answer? What are their limitations? - How has data gathered from large corpora of (student) writing changed the scholarship and practice of composition / rhetoric? How might such data do so in the future? - Responsible Research - Who is responsible for creating or curating datasets in composition? How might the answers change at different scales? - What are the ethical responsibilities of anyone storing, retrieving, or analyzing composition data – perhaps especially where students and their writing are concerned? - How, should researchers negotiate issues of consent and representation when recording or reporting on data? How is this affected by the scale or scope of the data? - Discourse and Discovery - How can computational tools aid in the qualitative coding of (student) writing? How do these practices relate to traditional coding methods? - What data-supported models of writing practices emerge from the study of digital corpora? - What does or can big data show about the nature of expertise and learning in the context of composing? - Pedagogical Practices - How can the field of composition / rhetoric use data to positively impact pedagogical or andragogical practices? For example, how can data-supported studies improve composition instruction in higher education? - What is the relationship between distant and close reading in regard to assessing student writing? Can and/or should distant reading practices be applied to assessment at the undergraduate level, and in what ways? - What role can analysis of big data play for student researchers in composition / rhetoric? - Supporting a Data-Supported Future - What standards or best practices are emerging for data archiving, aggregation, and interoperability? - How might those new to big-data approaches most usefully manage issues of scope or documentation? - How can we best support new researchers, teachers, or administrators in developing comfort with big-data approaches and insights? Call for chapter proposals - Different Bodies: Disability and the Media

Book edited by Jacob Johanssen and Diana Garrisi (Communication and Media Research Institute, University of Westminster) Following on from the conference ‘Different Bodies: (Self-) Representation, Disability and the Media’ which was held at the University of Westminster in June, we are preparing a book proposal based on some of the themes arising from the conference. The book proposal will be submitted to Peter Lang, who have already expressed a strong interest in the project. The collection is intended to offer a comprehensive view of the relationship between disability and the media from a global and multidisciplinary perspective. Building upon existing studies, the book aims to explore if and how the rapidly changing technological means of communication are affecting how the body as strange, shameful, wrong, impaired, wounded, scarred, disabled, lacking, different or ‘other’ is constructed in the media. In particular the book aims to discuss whether the Internet has made it possible to develop new, alternative or more inclusive narratives that challenge long-established mainstream coverage of disability. Some of the questions we would like to address are, for example, whether self-representations of disability on the Internet are contesting or aligning with representations on mainstream media outlets. We would also like to look at issues such as the rise of disability hate crimes online, the relationship between journalism and disability awareness campaigns, online dating and disability, the media coverage of disability rights and employment. One of our aims is to establish the extent to which the media contribute to shape our relation with diversity in the digital era and, ultimately, our relationship with ourselves. Possible themes include but are not limited to: · Affective labour of bodies · Auto-ethnographic accounts of the body in / through digital media · Celebrity bodies and the spectacles of transformation · Cinema and disability · Contemporary coverage of disability in print/online/television/radio · De-colonizing and de-westernising the mediated body · Disability and advertising · Disability and race · Disability and the media: historical perspectives · (Dis)Empowerments of the disabled body · Journalism and practices of othering the body · Neoliberalism, policy and austerity politics · Reality television and the body · Representing wounds and scars · Researching bodies and the media: frameworks and methodologies · Stigma and the body - Posthumanist and non-representational frameworks · The abject body · The body and trauma · The mediated body as spectacle · The medicalised body in the media · The objectification of the disabled body in the media We invite submissions of 200-250 words chapter proposals.
