Apologies for cross-posting CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS Conditions of Mediation: Phenomenological Approaches to Media, Technology and Communication Editors: Tim Markham and Scott Rodgers In June 2013, the ICA preconference Conditions of Mediation (see http://conditionsofmediation.wordpress.com for further information) brought together scholars from a wide range of perspectives – including audience studies, political theory, metaphysics, media archaeology, software studies, science and technology studies, cultural geography and urban studies – to critically reflect on both the merits and limits of phenomenological approaches for understanding media, in philosophical, theoretical, political and empirical terms. Inspired by this very successful conference, we are now preparing a proposal for an edited book under the same title. The proposed format of the book is to have a substantive introduction, two ‘dialogues’ involving Graham Harman, Lisa Parks, Paddy Scannell, Shaun Moores, Nick Couldry and David Berry (based on their keynote papers), and 10-12 short paper chapters of 4000 words (excluding bibliography). We are therefore issuing an Open Call for Chapter Proposals. If you are interested in contributing a chapter to this edited book, please send a chapter title and 400 word abstract by no later than 15 September 2013 to Scott Rodgers at s.rodgers(a)bbk.ac.uk. Those that are subsequently invited to submit a full chapter will need to have this completed by 1 March 2014. Please direct any inquiries to Scott Rodgers at s.rodgers(a)bbk.ac.uk. [please redistribute as appropriate] The Information Technology & Politics (ITP) section of the American Political Science Association (APSA) invites nominations for the "Best software award for research and teaching in the area of Information Technology and Politics." The eligibility rules are as follows: • The first major release of the software must have been in 2013. • The software must hold some relevance to research and/or teaching in the area of information technology and politics. Beyond that, I would like to invite anyone who has developed potentially ITP-relevant software to submit it for consideration. You don’t have to be a member of the ITP section or even of APSA as long as your software meets the two above conditions. You may also nominate software packages developed by others that you have found useful in your ITP-related scholarly research or teaching. During one week, it will propose sessions open to the public - researchers, heritage professionals or website producers interested by the long term access to internet content - and sessions for IIPC members only. qualitative Google search results methdologies

Hello All, I am wondering if anyone has come across good models of methodology for qualitative research that uses search terms and google results. What I'm thinking here is something like looking at page one search results as the sites a user interested in a particular topic is most likely to come across if they are using particular search terms, and Google Trends can also give some indication of the search terms' relative popularity. Article/literature on "algorithms" and "geodata"?

And if you could help me out on another issue? I'm also looking for an article/literature that deals with the relationship of "algorithms" and "geodata". Most of the work about algorithms that I could find seem very "technical", thus missing the social aspect of it. My main concern: What are and do algorithms: technically but as well as from a social anthropological perspective? How is geodata used within these algorithms causing what? How can one theorize and conceptualize the relationsship of geodata, algorithms and ethnography? Again, together with a colleague I will be holding a workshop to discuss ways in which numeric (geo-)data and ethnography can be joined in anthropological theory and methodology. We both think that algorithms and their relationship with geodata play an important part to understand these issues. Any ideas or suggestions of an article? Thanks you so much!
