ESRC DTC Collaborative Studentship - Dashboard Interfaces CENTRE FOR INTERDISCPLINARY METHODOLOGIES (CIM) and INTEL (USA): The Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies at The University of Warwick is pleased to announce a new 3-year ESRC Doctoral Collaborative Studentship, on the topic of Dashboard Interfaces. The primary objective of the Studentship is to investigate the function and use of Dashboard Interfaces by individuals and organisations. Such interfaces bring together a range of data flows and visualisations into one or multiple screens for the purpose of monitoring and decision-making. Dashboard interfaces are a site from which to examine the changing role of software in organisations; the relationship between visualisation and control; the social life of metrics and numbers; the nature of the screen interface; and transformations in organisational and individual monitoring and decision-making, among other things. Dr Nathaniel Tkacz (CIM) will act as the primary supervisor for the successful applicant. The collaborating organisation is Intel and the successful candidate will spend a portion of the candidature at Intel’s main office in Portland, USA, where they will have the opportunity to work with social science researchers. Outcomes: The main output of the research will be a PhD dissertation, but the successful candidate will also be encouraged to write academic journal articles as well as disseminate the project’s findings through other outreach activities to relevant stakeholders and wider publics. Eligibility: We welcome applicants from a range of disciplinary backgrounds with relevant qualifications (at least a 2:i Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject), with preference given to students with a relevant Masters degree. Filling out the questionnaire should take around 15 minutes. The survey is conducted as part of the PhDSpaces project funded by the library and the registrar's office at the University of Warwick. The project is investigating the Physical and Digital needs of postgraduate and early career researchers. As part of the project, we're asking Research Masters, PhD students and Early Career Researchers to fill in an online questionnaire about the digital research tools/social networks they use, including finding out about their awareness of the teaching & learning spaces and their associated social network accounts. RFP: Case Studies for Civic Media Reader (MIT Press)

There is less than one week to go for contributions to the Civic Media Reader. We’re hoping to get more case study submissions for the both the print and online book. Please send your contributions by Friday, April 25. CIVIC MEDIA READER CALL FOR CASE STUDY SUBMISSIONS There is a groundswell of activity in the fields of civic engagement and technologies coming from a wide range of academic and practical disciplines. But there is no volume that attempts to pull this work together under a single umbrella. The Civic Media Reader (MIT Press, 2015), edited by Eric Gordon and Paul Milhailidis, will provide a thorough exploration of the relationship between citizens, technologies and engagement in a global context and serve as a shared framework for this emerging discipline. The book is divided into five sections--Big Picture, Modes of Engagement, Institutions and Organizations, Activism and Participation, and Methods and Collaborations--each with a host of sections that investigate how civic technologies are affecting certain policy domains, civic practices, or facilitating more efficient or meaningful participation in contemporary society. To support and enrich these theoretical chapters, we are looking for case studies in the various fields and disciplines in which civic technologies and corresponding practices have developed since the turn of the 21st Century. A case study presents a detailed look at a particular organization, use of technology, or methodology which highlights a unique aspect of contemporary civics. Cases will take two forms: written, descriptive pieces about 1000 words in length or multimedia cases (e.g. annotated video, audio clip, image timeline, slideshow, etc.). Examples of cases might include Kony2012, the Harry Potter Alliance, the Civic Cloud Collaborative, Nation Builder, E-Democracy, EngagethePower.org<http://engagethepower.org/>, or Change.org<http://change.org/>. About 30 1000-word cases will be published in the print book and multimedia cases will be made available on a companion website to be launched around the time of the book?s publication. These multimedia submissions will facilitate discussion about the chapters online and offer a more interactive digital perspective on their themes and ideas. Call for proposals: VL Innovators Challenge (#VLInnovators)

Voto Latino, in Partnership with The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and Google, Announces the $500,000 VL Innovators Challenge The tech competition will provide $10,000-$100,000 grants to 10-15 Millennial-led projects that improve the lives of and expand opportunities for Latinos in the U.S. Voto Latino <http://www.votolatino.org/>, a nonprofit that empowers Latino Millennials to create positive change in their communities, in partnership with the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation<http://www.macfound.org/> and Google, and administered by HASTAC <http://www.hastac.org/>, launched the VL Innovators Challenge <http://www.vlinnovators.com/>, a tech competition for Millennials between the ages of 18 and 34. The VL Innovators Challenge seeks to cultivate a pool of Latino tech talent and find innovative solutions to problems in the Latino community. The Challenge will award $500,000 in grants to the 10-15 best projects, and it is part of a year-long celebration commemorating Voto Latino’s 10-year anniversary. “The VL Innovators Challenge is an investment in a rising generation of Latino Millennials who are more than just consumers of technology; they are creators and they are makers,” said María Teresa Kumar, President and CEO, Voto Latino. “Study after study shows that Latinos are highly entrepreneurial, yet our presence is missing in the corridors of Silicon Valley. Through the VL Innovators Challenge, we hope to not only provide funding for great ideas but also the access to make these ideas succeed.” The VL Innovators Challenge is part of the Connected Learning<http://connectedlearning.tv/> movement, an educational approach that makes learning relevant to everyone, to real life and real work, and to the realities of the digital age. “For nearly a decade, MacArthur has invested in innovations to reimagine a future in which all young people are able to engage in learning that is relevant to their lives and prepares them for success in school, the workplace, and their community,” said Connie Yowell, Director of Education at the John D. and Catherine T. Google will host winners at its Mountain View Headquarters for a week of learning. Today, Latinos make up a mere 7 percent of U.S. tech workers and studies suggest the gap to careers in Silicon Valley begins at an early age. Black and Latino students are four times less likely to take AP Math and Science exams than their White and Asian counterparts, and six times less likely to take the AP Computer Science exam. In 2013, Blacks and Latinos made up only 9 percent of computer science and engineering college graduates. “Our country suffers from a severe wealth gap, and Latinos are getting left behind. Not enough Latino Millennials go after the high-paying tech jobs, where the average salary is $77,000 a year -- $40,000 more than what the average Latino makes today,” said Wilmer Valderrama, actor and Co-Chair of Voto Latino’s Artist Coalition. “The VL Innovators Challenge seeks to address this growing disparity head on.” Each proposed project submitted for the tech competition must address a need or challenge in the Latino community and must include a new tech tool to solve that challenge.
