Dear community! I've been appreciatively reading this ml over the last couple of month. Now I really hope that you can help me out on the following issue. I'm looking for a specific social anthropological article (or literature in general) that covers three topics at once "geodata", "crowdmapping" and "participatory (politics)". My main concern: How does (big) geodata and the (crowd) mapping of it -- e.g. by combining geodata with other kinds of (big) data -- change civic engagement? The focus of the article: Together with a colleague I will be holding a workshop to discuss ways in which numeric (geo-)data and ethnography can be joined within anthropological theory and methodology. Thus the focus of the article should be empirical (giving examples), but it should also try to theorize and conceptualize the relationsship of geodata and ethnography. I would really appreciate your shared expertise on this one. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks you so much! Some examples are organizations, nations, websites, companies, products and even persons. These identities are constituted through a complex interplay of interactions, a kind of distributed cognition. Communication requires not only a representation in an individual’s mind but also the knowledge that there is a similar representation in the minds of others. Platforms built on top of the Internet have changed the way we can create such shared representations. They allow people to aggregate knowledge from socially distant areas. They also allow diverse groups of people – and maybe machines in the form of artificial intelligences – to negotiate identities. We can build collective intelligences that themselves will steer the quest for knowledge. The collectives can be self-catalyzing, deciding individually or collaboratively what to do next, out of which novel and practical ideas emerge. While these open design collectives rely on organic growth and slow embedding of members in the network, alternative structures based on crowds can be assembled more rapidly. Between the two extremes are a host of different organizational structures, in which already committed members of a community are deployed to create or improve ideas. And the traces of these new organizations are also varied, ranging from ephemeral short messages to curated collaborative knowledge repositories. The output often takes the form of digital media. We are interested in papers that observe, analyze, or visualize these organization structures and the innovations they produce, papers that simulate this production through software, papers that analyze the phenomena of crowdsourcing, collective intelligence and collaborative mass knowledge production, and design research that creates and evaluates new tools and processes. We are particularly open to papers that explore unusual ways of modelling emergent organizations: models that demonstrate or reflect the influence of social systems on user behaviours, models that consider the multiple connections between people, technology, and institutions, models of technological and social affordances, models that break personal identity into sub-relations, and models that examine the emergence of roles, identity, and institutions. We are interested in applying the ideas of James March, Mark Granovetter, Harrison White, Charles Tilly and related scholars to information systems. We are looking for papers about the mechanisms (in the sense of Bhaskar) that explain the emergence of collective identity. In sum, the content of the track is open to analysis of collective intelligence, new knowledge creation, and crowdsourcing. Included also is the analysis of social interaction as a way of describing underlying social structure, and in particular the social construction of identity and roles.. Thus the track is open to a wide range of content areas that lend themselves to the analysis of relations between people, collectives, and machines, as well as the products produced as a result of these relations. In this minitrack, we are aiming to attract an audience from five groups: first, those interested in collective intelligence and crowdsourcing and who find a home in information systems departments; second, those in information schools who study these topics; third, computer scientists who are interested in the analysis of network and crowd processes, fourth, those who use social networks to describe social structure and fifth, industry practitioners. Hello, I think it depends a lot on what you want your sample to be. Should it be evenly distributed in terms of geographic area, in terms of population, etc.? Possible approaches may be: - Generate random GPS coordinates then use some reverse geocoding service (I think Google does it) - Use public open data, such as the areas covered by voting locations - Parse the Open Street Map database for a certain type of amenities I think it varies from country to country. In the UK, the Post Office database has all addresses and can be licensed, but I don't know about equivalents elsewhere. The popular media in the U.S.A. is all doom and gloom on this issue, Sarah Palin's been posting about it on Facebook, Bill Clinton's been quizzing Jimmy Wales about it and expressing his concerns, and a number of Congresspersons have banded up to prevent this from happening through the awfully-titled Domain Openness Through Continued Oversight Matters, or DOTCOM Act. In his talk, Pranesh Prakash will attempt to a) explain what "key domain name functions" the N.T.I.A. currently performs -- including how the DNS root server system works -- and what they want to "transition"; b) examine what positions have historically been taken by some of the actors to the N.T.I.A. performing this function, and how those positions are changing post-Snowden, post-Montevideo Declaration, pre-NetMundial, and post-N.T.I.A announcement, positing that there's an interesting change and even a reversal of positions that we've seen post-Montevideo Declaration; and c) provide tentative views on what aspects of this transition announcement are important and can be influenced and what were decided in 1998. He also served as the Policy Director for the Centre for Internet and Society, a Bagalore-based non-profit that engages in research and policy advocacy. *Education *LL.M., National Law School of India University B.A., National Law School of India University (2) The impacts and ethics of open data standards As the movement to publish Open Government Data on the web matures, attention is shifting from simply placing datasets online, to constructing new public data infrastructures, developing and adopting common data standards to allow data from diverse sources to be aggregated, integrated and linked together. From the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) for describing public transport schedules, and Open311 standards for reporting issues to local government, to the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) standard for aid project information, and the emerging Open Contracting Data Standard, governments across the globe are using common specifications to make their data available. Although development and implementation of open data standards is often approached as a purely technical choice, it involves many decisions with political and social impact. Whilst fields such as infrastructure studies can offer a descriptive account of how standards come about and embody socio-technical choices, transforming this critical awareness into principles for the design of open data standards remains a gap. In this talk Tim Davies will seek to highlight the trend towards new public data infrastructures, and, in light of this, will explore critical questions and approaches for evaluating, and constructing, open data standards. Tim Davies is coordinator of the Exploring the Emerging Impacts of Open Data in Developing Countries project at the World Wide Web Foundation, where he also works on the development of new public contracting open data standards for the Open Contracting Partnership. He is a PhD candidate in Web Science at the University of Southampton, and a fellow of the Berkman Centre for Internet and Society. Couch Internet Research Award 2014 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.com/ The Carl Couch Center issues an international call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that apply symbolic interactionist approaches to internet studies. According to basic symbolic interactionist premises, what we understand as self, identity, relationship, and cultural formations are constructed dialogically and interactively. While the works of George H. Mead, Georg Simmel, Erving Goffman and other leading symbolic interactionists have been integral to the study of social interaction, Carl Couch was among the first from this tradition to suggest the importance of engaging in the study of mediated interaction. It is critical that symbolic interactionists move boldly forward, beyond Couch's initial suggestion, to study what has become for many a dominant form of communication in their everyday life. Whether we research identities, emotion, memory, family, work, career, presentations of self, deception, love, loss or other areas, the impact of mediated communication is felt by those interacting within it. As internet-related media continue to influence our everyday interactions--not only with other people but also with technologies, devices, algorithms, platform parameters, and so forth--it becomes crucial for symbolic interactionists to attend to the role of these mediating factors in the interaction process. We encourage any paper that uses a symbolic interactionist approach in internet studies. We also encourage papers that explore the interface between deliberate social interaction and structured (or automated) interactions sponsored or enacted by various technological features, exploring not only how identities, relations, and social formations are negotiated through social interactions, but also how these interactions are mediated further through the use or capacities of various technologies. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of symbolic interactionist approaches and concepts, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Those contemplating entering should note that an interactionist approach demands thoughtful analysis, and not mere description, of social interactions. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of four: Mark D.
