Call for papers: *THE FAN STUDIES NETWORK 2014 CONFERENCE* 27-28th September 2014 Regent's University London, UK Keynote Speakers: Dr Paul Booth (DePaul University) Dr Rhiannon Bury (Athabasca University) Mr Orlando Jones (star of *Sleepy Hollow, *appearing for a virtual Q&A) For two years the Fan Studies Network has provided a fruitful and enthusiastic space for academics interested in fans and fandom to connect, share resources, and develop their research ideas. Following the success of our first symposium in November 2013, we are delighted to announce the FSN2014 Conference, taking place over two days at Regent's University London from 27-28th September 2014. FSN2014 will feature three fantastic keynote speakers. The first will be Dr Paul Booth, author of *Digital Fandom: New Media Studies *(Peter Lang, 2010), *Time on TV: Temporal Displacement and Mashup Television* (Peter Lang, 2012) and editor of *Fan Phenomena: Doctor Who* (Intellect, 2013). His newest book, *Media Play: Pastiche, Parody, Fandom*, is forthcoming from University of Iowa Press. The second keynote will be Dr Rhiannon Bury, author of *Cyberspaces of Their Own: Female Fandoms Online *(Peter Lang, 2005) and currently writing her second book for publication with Peter Lang, entitled *Television 2.0: New Perspectives on Digital Convergence, Audiences, and Fans*. We are also incredibly delighted that Mr Orlando Jones, an American film and television writer, producer, and actor who currently plays Captain Frank Irving in *Sleepy Hollow* (Fox, 2013-) and vocal proponent of fan culture, will be joining us via Skype to participate in a virtual Q&A session. We invite abstracts of no more than 300 words for individual 20 minute papers that address any aspect of fandom or fan studies. We also welcome collated submissions for pre-constituted panels. We encourage new members, in all stages of study, to the network and welcome proposals for presentations on, but not limited to, the following possible topics: - Activism and fandom - Producer-audience interactions - Non-Western fan cultures - Ethics in fan studies - Defining fandom - Anti-Fandom and Non-Fandom - Fan use of social media platforms - Fandom (and) controversies - The future of fan studies We also invite expressions of interest (100- 200 words) from anyone wishing to host a short session of 'speed geeking.' This would involve each speaker chairing a short discussion on a relevant topic of their choosing, and then receiving extensive feedback, making it ideal for presenting in-progress or undeveloped ideas. Colleagues: I’m very pleased to announce that the sixth book in the MIT Press collection “Information Society Series” I am co-editing with Laura DeNardis has been released: Pirate Politics: The New Information Policy Contests by Patrick Burkart http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/pirate-politics The Swedish Pirate Party emerged as a political force in 2006 when a group of software programmers and file-sharing geeks protested the police takedown of The Pirate Bay, a Swedish file-sharing search engine. The Swedish Pirate Party, and later the German Pirate Party, came to be identified with a “free culture” message that came into conflict with the European Union’s legal system. In this book, Patrick Burkart examines the emergence of Pirate politics as an umbrella cyberlibertarian movement that views file sharing as a form of free expression and advocates for the preservation of the Internet as a commons. He links the Pirate movement to the Green movement, arguing that they share a moral consciousness and an explicit ecological agenda based on the notion of a commons, or public domain. The Pirate parties, like the Green Party, must weigh ideological purity against pragmatism as they move into practical national and regional politics. Burkart uses second-generation critical theory and new social movement theory as theoretical perspectives for his analysis of the democratic potential of Pirate politics. After setting the Pirate parties in conceptual and political contexts, Burkart examines European antipiracy initiatives, the influence of the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, and the pressure exerted on European governance by American software and digital exporters. He argues that pirate politics can be seen as “cultural environmentalism,” a defense of Internet culture against both corporate and state colonization. Online bartering sites, a plethora of crowdfunding platforms, new forms of valuation, e-wallets and crypto-currencies like Bitcoin, are but a few examples. These coincide with the huge growth of mobile money transfer services across Asia and Africa and the general convergence of digital and financial industries. MoneyLab: Coining Alternatives is a network that aims to critically explore, map and probe the politics, inner-workings and governance of these alternative digital-economic forms. It is not enough to merely promote and further develop (technical) alternatives, we also need time to ask ourselves critical questions and re-examine the very underpinnings of our endeavours. Of central importance to this project is the formation of a collaborative network of researchers, artists, developers, engineers, and others interested in sharing, coining, critiquing, and ushering in alternative network economies., focused on the monetization debate and looked into three specific fields of inquiry: Bitcoins and other crypto-currencies, crowd funding research and mobile money in the global South.

Scott, Rutgers University Background Hidden organizations are ones where the identity of the organization and/or its members is heavily concealed, for a variety of reasons, from various audiences. They are collectives organizing in shaded, shadowed, and dark regions of the organizational landscape (see Scott, 2013). These hidden organizations include, but certainly are not limited to, undercover organizations, shadow governments, clandestine groups, terrorist cells, crime cartels, many gangs, and other dark networks. To that we can add many online and offline support groups, certain hate groups, new religious movements, some hacker/hacktivist organizations, secret societies, and potentially even political action committees. Also hidden from view are various stigmatized companies, front/shell organizations, aspects of the informal economy, and even certain highly specialized small businesses that remain largely invisible to the public. These hidden collectives represent an important and likely growing segment of our world. Yet, in many ways, we as citizens, consumers, and scholars of organizations have failed to seriously and adequately consider these various forms of hidden organizationscreating both missed opportunities and potential dangers. There are several explanations for this. First, our scholarly focus on the familiar organizational foreground of predominantly large for-profit businesses, easily recognized governmental agencies, and a few high profile nonprofits and NGOs contributes to a lack of awareness of what may be an even larger arena of other less visible collectives. We instruct our students about the value of branding and identity creation, various professional associations conduct training workshops to improve skills in reputation and image management, and we draw primarily on these recognizable organizations in our teaching and consultingall of which draws attention away from more hidden collectives. Second, we live in a world where too often the name of the game is the name game (Glynn & Abzug, 2002; Schultz, Hatch, & Larsen, 2000), where organizations dedicate substantial efforts to provide a highly recognizable name and visual identities that enhance their reputation (Fombrun & Shanley, 1990). There is a general bias in much of society for openness and transparency and a lack of serious attention to that which is hidden or kept secret. A third reason for the lack of attention to hidden organizations is that existing methods privilege more visible forms of organizing. Certainly, their somewhat hidden nature often makes accessing information about them challengingleading researchers to pursue more convenient samples and cases. A final potential reason for the inattention to these hidden organizations is seen in broader critiques about our continued reliance on outdated organizational theory even amid recognition of widespread changes. Davis (2009) offers an informative critique in arguing that large corporations have lost their central place in American social structure as we move from an industrial to post industrial economy, where the applicability of several of our existing theories is called into question (p. 41). Thus, a contemporary view of organizations and organizing must extend our focus to consider other important forms and the distinctive organizing processes in these collectives. Recent work examining both alternative organizations (see Parker, Cheney, Fournier, & Land, 2014) and the dark side of organizations (see Linstead, Maréchal, & Griffin, 2014) represents valuable extensions to our scholarshipthough that work rarely addresses hidden organizations themselves. These various hidden collectives matter because there are real consequences associated with the successful and unsuccessful efforts of these organizations and their members to conceal and reveal their identity to key audiences (Scott, 2013, p. xi). As Alvesson (2004) observed, We live in a complex world, characterized by interaction with a lot of different people, organizations (of whom most are barely known), and production processes (p. 168, emphasis added). Thus, we need more research and theorizing about these hidden collectives in our scholarship. This special issue seeks to unmask some of these hidden organizations and to initiate a scholarly conversation about these collectives as a way to stimulate prescient theorizing (Corley & Gioia, 2011) on this important part of our society. The selected submissions will shed some much needed light on these hidden organizations and their largely concealed practices by highlighting collectives of a different breed and, often, purpose. It will seriously question assumptions about the importance of promoting an organizations identity and building widespread name recognition in an effort to establish a strong reputation. It will also hopefully offer ideas for theorizing about and researching a much wider range of organizational forms than those that currently dominate our literature. Possible Topics This special issue seeks both empirical and conceptual/theoretical pieces related to hidden organizations. Special consideration will be given to submissions reporting original datautilizing any appropriate methodthat examine communicative and/or managerial aspects of a wide range of hidden organizations including, but not limited to, the following entities and their members: covert special missions units, secret or secretive government agencies, clandestine operations, spy rings, eco-terrorist groups, other terrorist cells, the Mafia or other organized crime syndicates, Yakuza or other street gangs, Silk road and others operating on the dark web, pirate organizations, illegal animal fighting rings, KKK, various hate groups, twelve-step support groups, various other online and offline support groups using anonymity, domestic violence shelters, the Underground Railroad or other similar assistance networks, Scientology, cults and other new religious movements, Anonymous and certain other hacker/hacktivist organizations, various secret societies and select fraternal organizations, Skull and Bones, political action committees, sweatshops, front or shell organizations, various aspects of the informal economy, bathhouses and certain others elements of the sex industry, and highly specialized small businesses that remain largely invisible to most. We are also interested in empirical research and more conceptual/theoretical essays addressing motivations for and/or ways in which organizations and/or their members conceal identity, promote invisibility, maintain secrets, obscure image, encourage anonymity, fake transparency, and/or engage in other organizing practices that serve to hide organizations and their members. Submissions detailing unique methodological approaches appropriate for the study of hidden organizations will also be considered. We encourage submissions that examine organizations operating in multiple countries or that have special international significance. In general, we are not looking for studies that merely examine the deceptive practices or hidden work within otherwise visible organizations unless those practices are truly core to the collectives identity. We are not interested in failed efforts of organizations that were unable to effectively promote themselves to a specific audience. Furthermore, we are generally seeking more than historical or purely descriptive essays about one or more hidden organizations. Subject: Internet Language Conference in Braga, Portugal (June 26-27, 2014) "Internet Language: Communicating in a Global World" International Conference Universidade do Minho 26-27 de Junho de 2014 With the emergence of the World Wide Web in the 1990s, communicating became not only much easier but possible on a global scale. By transmitting messages online, human beings soon developed new, creative ways to connect verbally with one another, the variety of which came to be labeled "computer-mediated communication" (CMC). This particular sort of discourse, as produced via networked computers, is a key element of present-day social and interpersonal interaction. Hence the lavish academic input into the study of the various forms that CMC takes, from email and comment boards to discussion groups, real-time chat and virtual reality roleplaying games. The linguistic features of the computer networked medium - which relies almost exclusively on visually-presented language - vary according not only to the kind of messaging system at stake, but also to the social and cultural backgrounds of the interactants. Besides, being free from the noise of other channels of communication and from physical context, they provide a privileged vantage point from which to investigate verbal interaction and the correlation between discourse and social practice. We welcome contributions for 20-minute papers in English on any aspect of the study of Internet language and online discourse. Possible topics include (but are not restricted to): - Linguistic features of synchronous versus asynchronous online exchanges: - Written/oral and formal/informal dichotomies - Lexical creativity - Syntactic fragmentation - Expressive substitutes for auditory information (like prosody and laughter) and for gestural and body information - Online conversational interaction: - Turn-taking: gaps, overlaps, interruptions - Adjacency strategies: addressivity, linking, quoting - Participation structures: one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-many - Uncertainty reduction strategies in the absence of nonverbal cues (self-disclosure, question asking, and question/disclosure intimacy) - Speech-act design: online criticism, requesting, complaining, protesting, disagreeing, "flaming", etc. - Politeness versus impoliteness in CMC: - Online face-threatening acts - Topic management - Role of gender and age in ingroup versus outgroup interaction - Questions of anonymity, accountability and physical, geographical and temporal detachment - "Netiquette" and FAQ discourse - Socially-conditioned variation: - Use of discursive markers of social class, age, race and ethnicity (such as culture-specific lexis, code-switching, etc.) - Adherence to culturally-prescribed gendered interactional norms - Choice of online identity versus stereotyping - Variation according to communication purpose (recreational, political, professional, pedagogical, creative, etc.) - Discursive indicators of social and antisocial behaviour: - Social behaviour: affectivity, cohesiveness, and interactivity - Antisocial behaviour: negative socioemotional behaviour, group exclusion, and confrontational interaction - Ideological expression of power hierarchies in virtual communities: - Discursive negotiation and expression of asymmetrical social relations in cyberspace - Overrepresentation of white, middle class, English-speaking males in computer-mediated discourse - Computer-mediated communication as a tool of either oppression or resistance - Dominance of the English language on the Internet, and the consequent global spread of U.S. values and cultural practices. Dear AoIRists, Some of you may have seen today's AP story in the *Washington Post* about the US attempt to create a Twitter like messaging system, ZunZeneo, to foment a "Cuban Spring" in Cuba (link below). While this reminds us of how communication technologies have always been at the forefront of serving "imperialist" projects, I am afraid this leaked story bolsters fears and suspicions of conspiracy and fair-minded folks alike about the "organic"/indigenous nature of the "Arab Spring." What does it say about our research into social media and activism in developing nations AND those of us who engage in this type of research? I would appreciate hearing some of your views on the ethics of such project, its implications on new media activism, and scholars'/researchers' analyses of "new" media enabled social change in developing nations.
