Re: new media and shock

Hi all - I generally just lurk, but I was struck by a discontinuity in discussion last Thursday and think it bears on this question of becoming inured to shock. There were 6 posts on "London...the internet accounts" interspersed with 4 on "AoIR 6.0 Chicago 2005 Registration is now open", 1 each on "iCS 8.2", "Call for proposals", and "Internet and fun/joy/pleasure". In the three days since, "London" vanished, some of the other threads continued, and new ones appeared. This is no doubt the nature of most conversations on this list, and perhaps everything that could be said about shock and bearing up and giving sympathy was expressed in the comments that were posted, and/or continuation has moved to other venues. But I had some cognitive dissonance reading the disparate threads as business-as-usual went on for many (including me) while others were wondering just how "usual" their lives were going to continue to be. I'm not familiar with any of the literature on shock, but some levels or layers of protection are evident in the acts of just getting on with things, whatever those immediate things that consume us may be. At the same time, I'm aware it would also be counterproductive (at least to purposes of peace and justice) to mine the event for all its tragedy, as this would play into political efforts to cast the attack in symbolic terms that fuel nationalisms and other hatreds. In response to Greg Elmer's Q to the list: Yes, people with larger networks do use the internet more. We have only cross-sectional data. apologies for crossposting, distribute as appropriate -jh Call for Papers/Participation Please join us in a workshop on learning and research in Second Life on October 17, 2007 in Vancouver at Internet Research 8.0 (http:// wiki.aoir.org/index.php?title=About_IR8.0) Paper Deadline August 15th. Second Life(R) is a 3d virtual environment created by Linden Lab which has captured the attentions of researchers and teachers from around the world from a variety of disciplines. This workshop aims to improve the understanding of Second Life as a Learning and Research environment. It will bring 35 researchers together to collaborate, discuss and workshop diverse topics related to research and learning in Second Life. We will pursue a full-day schedule in which participants will discuss their work and interests on four different topics: learning in Second Life, integrated learning, the contributions of research to the community and ethical research methods. How can we better enable learning in this sphere? How can we better enable research? As a highlight, Robin Linden will give a talk to the group, and members of Linden Lab will participate throughout the day. We encourage researchers to submit papers and short biography to slworkshop(a)tmttlt.com which will be selected and distributed amongst participants before the workshop. First invitations will be offered to those who provide full papers for consideration. These papers have two purposes: first is to provide a common platform for understanding our research and teaching and second submitted papers may be considered for publication in an edited volume being produced in relation to the workshop, or possibly in peer reviewed publication derived from the workshop (these are currently under discussion). Subsequent invitation will be made based upon research/teaching statement and biography. If you are interested in participating, please send an email containing your information to slworkshop(a)tmttlt.com. Decisions will be made by September 1st, barring incident. There is a limit of 35 participants at the physical meeting; the event will be simulcast into Second Life. We welcome professionals, faculty and graduate students to participate. Immigrant internet use refs request

Hi all, We have a project at Trinity starting, researching immigrants' internet use here in the Irish context. In particular, we're interested in how immigrants are accessing local government and social services online, but also how the internet is used for political activity, including political activity related to the country of origin. I'd be very grateful if anyone could suggest useful reading in this area (somewhat to my surprise, an archive search yielded few results). THE DOCUMENT ACADEMY INVITES: PROPOSALS FOR PAPERS, PRESENTATIONS, DEMONSTRATIONS AND EXHIBITS AT DOCAM 06 October 13-15th, 2006 University of California, Berkeley School of Information South Hall, Berkeley, California, U.S.A. DOCAM 06 is the fourth Annual meeting of the Document Academy, an international network of scholars, artists and professionals in various fields interested in the exploration of the document as a useful approach, concept and tool in Sciences, Arts, Business, and Society. It is organized and co-sponsored by The Program of Documentation Studies, University of Tromso, Norway and School of Information, University of California, Berkeley. We are delighted to announce that the key-note speaker this year will be Professor Geoffrey C. Bowker, Executive Director for the Center for Science, Technology and Society, Santa Clara University.
