Apologies for cross-posting CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS Conditions of Mediation: Phenomenological Approaches to Media, Technology and Communication Editors: Tim Markham and Scott Rodgers In June 2013, the ICA preconference Conditions of Mediation (see http://conditionsofmediation.wordpress.com for further information) brought together scholars from a wide range of perspectives – including audience studies, political theory, metaphysics, media archaeology, software studies, science and technology studies, cultural geography and urban studies – to critically reflect on both the merits and limits of phenomenological approaches for understanding media, in philosophical, theoretical, political and empirical terms. Inspired by this very successful conference, we are now preparing a proposal for an edited book under the same title. The proposed format of the book is to have a substantive introduction, two ‘dialogues’ involving Graham Harman, Lisa Parks, Paddy Scannell, Shaun Moores, Nick Couldry and David Berry (based on their keynote papers), and 10-12 short paper chapters of 4000 words (excluding bibliography). We are therefore issuing an Open Call for Chapter Proposals. If you are interested in contributing a chapter to this edited book, please send a chapter title and 400 word abstract by no later than 15 September 2013 to Scott Rodgers at s.rodgers(a)bbk.ac.uk. Quantitative analysis of online pornography

Dear IRs, I am looking at available data of online pornography and looked at available studies made out of them. I'm very surprised to mainly only find studies on impact/effect of pornography on humans with almost none study on topology/dynamics/evolution of the object itself. Does some of you have some references in mind that dig in that direction ? Call for Papers The European Journal of Cultural Studies Special issue on Data Mining / Analytics Editors: Mark Andrejevic, University of Queensland, Australia; Alison Hearn, University of Western Ontario, Canada; Helen Kennedy, University of Leeds, UK. The widespread use of social media has given rise to new forms of monitoring, mining and aggregation strategies designed to monetize the huge volumes of data such usage produces. Social media monitoring and analysis industries, experts and consultancies have emerged offering a broad range of social media intelligence and reputation management services. Such services typically involve a range of analytical methods (sentiment analysis, opinion mining, social network analysis, machine learning, natural language processing), often offered in black-boxed proprietary form, in order to gain insights into public opinion, mood, networks and relationships and identify potential word-of-mouth influencers. Ostensibly, these various forms of data mining, analytics and machine learning also are paving the way for the development of a more intelligent or ‘semantic’ Web 3.0, offering a more ‘productive and intuitive’ user experience. As commercial and non-commercial organisations alike seek to monitor, influence, manage and direct social media conversations, and as global usage of social media expands, questions surface that challenge celebratory accounts of the democratizing, participatory possibilities of social media. Remembering that Web 2.0 was always intended as a business manifesto – O’Reilly’s early maxims included, after all, ‘data is the next Intel inside’, ‘users add value’ and ‘collaboration as data collection’ – we need to interrogate social media not only as communication tools, but also as techno-economic constructs with important implications for the management of populations and the formation of subjects. Data mining and analytics are about much more than targeted advertising: they envision new strategies for forecasting, targeting, and decision making in a growing range of social realms (employment, education, health care, policing, urban planning, epidemiology, etc.) with the potential to usher in new, unaccountable, and opaque forms of discrimination, sorting, inclusion and exclusion. As Web 3.0 and the ‘big data’ it generates moves inexorably toward predictive analytics and the overt technocratic management of human sociality, urgent questions arise about how such data are gathered, constructed and sold, to what ends they are deployed, who gets access to them, and how their analysis is regulated (boyd and Crawford 2012). This special issue aims to bring together scholars who interrogate social media intelligence work undertaken in the name of big data, big business and big government. It aims to draw together empirically-grounded and theoretically-informed analyses of the key issues in contemporary forms of data mining and analytics from across disparate fields and methodologies. . Contributions are invited that address a range of related issues. Areas for consideration could include, but are not limited to: • Political economy of social media platforms • Algorithmic culture • User perspectives on data mining • The politics of data visualisation • Big data and the cultural industries • Data journalism • The social life of big data methods • Inequalities and exclusions in data mining • Affective prediction and control • Data mining and new subjectivities • Ethics, regulation and data mining • Conceptualising big/data/mining • Social media intelligence at work • Social media and surveillance • Critical histories of data mining, sorting, and surveillance. CALL FOR PAPERS Journal of Language Aggression and Conflict Language studies have for years tended to concentrate on the analysis of harmonious interactions. However, more recently, the study of acrimonious interaction has started gathering momentum. Therefore, the launching of the Journal of Language Aggression and Conflict (John Benjamins) is a timely event to give center stage to research focusing on the language of conflict and aggression. CFP: Digital Technologies and Social Transformations: What Role for Critical Theory? Special Issue of the Canadian Journal of Communication Guest Editors: Delia Dumitrica and Sally Wyatt Contact email: cjcissue(a)ucalgary.ca In the past two decades, social research on the role of digital technologies in contemporary transformations has increasingly emerged as a disciplinary field in its own right. This has entailed a shift away from optimistic accounts of the alleged potential of these technologies to address social problems and alleviate inequalities, to a more nuanced understanding of the mutual shaping of digital technologies and existing social structures. Calls for recuperating the role of critical theory in understanding digital technologies (e.g. Feenberg 1991, 1999; Fuchs 2008, 2009) have emphasized the need to develop and refine suitable conceptual and methodological tools. The aim of this special issue is to map the use of critical theory in research on digital technologies. These technologies are often lauded for their capacity to harness creativity and knowledge, and proposed as a quick fix to the challenges and shortcomings of traditional hierarchies of power. Critical theory has emerged as an effort to constantly relate reflection on social aspects to existing configurations of power. The special issue brings together current research seeking to relate interpretation of digital technologies to power relations. The notion of power remains, of course, a notoriously problematic one; from its Marxist definition as (class) oppression to the post-structural (Foucaultian) power/knowledge pair, the common thrust of critical approaches has been to expose inequity and create conceptual and material spaces where more fair and egalitarian social arrangements can be imagined and enacted. Authors are encouraged to reflect on the role of power, in all its aspects, in their approach to digital technologies. We welcome a diverse approach to critical theory, including (but not restricted to) the traditional Marxist framework developed by the Frankfurt School, as well as subsequent revisions stemming from post-structuralism, postmodernism, feminism, queer theory, postcolonialism and indigenous epistemologies. We are also particularly interested in approaches that draw upon Canadian traditions, such as those inspired by the work of McLuhan, Smythe, Mosco, etc. Submissions should directly engage with the question of power, either in terms of conceptualizing technology or in terms of reflecting on technologys role in social transformations. We invite authors to submit papers exploring this problematic with reference to diverse themes and cases, including, but not limited to studies of: - Digital technologies and democratic/economic empowerment (e.g. destabilizing authoritarian regimes; alleviating the democratic deficit; including marginalized or disenfranchised groups; new forms of politics, etc.); - Digital technologies and the state (e.g. security; cybercrime; public policy; governance, etc.); - Digital technologies and power in everyday life (e.g. cyber-identity; sociability; social ties; social capital; networks; mundane Panopticism; etc.); - Digital technologies and relations of production (e.g. immaterial labor; knowledge creation/mobilization; big data; cloud computing; cultural production; etc.); - Digital technologies in social sciences (e.g. critical thinking; modes of learning; evaluation and monitoring of scholarly labor, gamification, etc.). Extended abstracts (600 words) will be accepted until December 1, 2013. Abstracts should explicitly discuss how the role of power/ critical theory will be addressed in the context of the respective argument/ case. Please include a prospective title, 5-7 keywords and a short bio-note about yourself. We welcome abstracts in either English or French. The editors will review the abstracts and invite submission of full-length papers (7,000 9,000 words) for blind peer-review. *International Conference on 'Crony Journalism: Redefining Journalistic Practices' on 18-19 January, 2014 at the Centre for Journalism & Mass Communication, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, India* *A Brief Word about Visva-Bharati:* A study of the evolution of Visva-Bharati during the lifetime of its founder, Rabindranath Tagore, offers an insight into what this institution was intended to achieve. Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel Laureate, founded a school for children at Santiniketan and it was around this nucleus that the structure of an unconventional university developed through careful planning. In May 1951, Visva-Bharati was declared to be a Central University and "An Institution of National Importance" by an Act of Parliament. It was granted the status of a unitary, teaching and residential university. The status and function of all the major institutions have been redefined in successive Amendment Acts and the University has continued to grow by giving accreditation to new institutions in response to needs newly felt. Visva-Bharati is ensconced in a rural setting in the district of Birbhum, about 160 km by road from Kolkata. The nearest railway station is Bolpur (Santiniketan) on the Eastern Railway and the air-terminal is Kolkata Airport. The University campus at Santiniketan, about 3 km from the railway station can be reached in a little over two hours from Kolkata by train. By train it is about 146 km. The University has two campuses, one at Santiniketan and the other at Sriniketan, which is about 3 km from Santiniketan. The institutional buildings and departments are distributed among them. *A Brief Word about Centre for Journalism and Mass Communication (CJMC):* Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's interest in media and communication is well known. His contribution to different literary journals and his naming Indian Broadcasting Service as “Akashbani” testify to this. Visva-Bharati started its Centre for Journalism and Mass Communication in 2000, with PG Diploma Course in Journalism and Mass Communication, reflecting the founder’s mindset. The Centre started preparing future communicators and fine-tuned them for connecting with people across the world. A full-fledged two-year MA course started in 2003-2004 with 25 students. Today, the Centre takes pride in offering PhD course as well. The PG degree curriculum is different here with thrust on all the media tools, ranging from print to electronic, from broadcasting to narrowcasting, from the very beginning. Initiation to the practicalities of communication is early, so that the absorption is complete. Students undertake visual, radio and newspaper projects in the first two semesters of study. These two semesters also have Communication Principles, Media Laws, History of Press, Heritage and Cultural Studies (with thrust on Tagore Studies) in the course. Third semester is devoted to Advertising, Public Relations, Development and Rural Communication. Every student specializes with one of the subjects among Magazine Journalism, Media Management and Science Journalism in the fourth semester. In this semester, every student completes a dissertation and undergoes media training too. It is one of the very few media learning institutions, which has its training publication (lab journal), *“Visva-Bharati Chronicle”*. This is a tabloid publication, which is ‘of’ the students and ‘by’ the students but ‘for’ the entire community. It gives the budding communicators a real taste of the practical field of journalism. *About The Seminar:* “We live in a system that espouses merit, equality, and a level playing field, but exalts those with wealth, power, and celebrity, however gained.” -Derrick Bell, Ethical Ambition The latter half of the last millennium was taken by storm by a particular idea of social evolution. The idea was that of meritocracy as given by Michael Young in his seminal work, ‘The Rise of the Meritocracy’. Young in his work satirizes the concept of meritocracy which he feels shall give way to deep discontent and ultimate rejection of the same. Fifty-five years later, today we find that Young’s assertions have indeed come true. While the idea of meritocracy is one that is apparently supported by all, nevertheless, it is an idea that is mostly limited to utopian discussions. While a lot is being said about the role and importance of the fourth estate, the media, in today’s world, the facts remain to say that the media today is plagued by a number of issues. However, perhaps the danger that haunts the media scenario the most today is the nexus between the powers that be and the media houses. This nexus between the outsiders and the insiders pertaining to the field of journalism is pejoratively ascribed to as crony journalism. Such has been the impact of cronyism that it not only threatens to radically change the traditional nature and ideals of journalism but also re-structure the working mechanism of the media houses which increasingly find themselves at the mercy of people with vested interests whose primary interest remains in anything but journalism. Such people consider the media to be either a profit-making endeavour or a power-sustaining tool. No wonder then, the Gandhian ideal of service being the sole aim of journalism has been shown the door to exploit the potential of the media to maximise the scope of individual goal-attainment. Such an approach has visibly resulted in the lack of faith among the masses pertaining to the functioning of the media. This certainly does not augur well for the future of the media as it is the media that exists for the people and not the other way round. Keeping the above concerns in mind, this seminar is a humble effort towards bringing to light the issues concerning crony journalism in today’s context and the possible ways of countering them. An entire session will also be devoted exclusively to the role of the social media in today’s scenario as the mainstream media finds it increasingly hard to shake off the effects of cronyism and the social media remains the only medium that may still be ascribed as an institution ‘of the people, by the people and for the people’. Thus, we keenly look forward to thoughtful endeavours by academicians, scholars and media professionals alike that are likely to contribute towards formulating a possible roadmap for approaching and addressing the concerns of crony journalism bearing in mind the causes, effects and solutions pertaining to the same in today’s perspective. Hi, all. Let me preface this by saying I’m a pretty newly minted PhD and am not yet wise in the ways of conference organizing. So, my ideas might be logistically unfeasible or outright naïve. I was thinking about Lori’s point that tracks might discourage interaction among people from different fields. It’s a valid point. At the same time, different disciplines and approaches have different “needs” (which have been discussed at length, so I won’t reiterate them here). Is it possible to use tracks for the submission and reviewing process, but not for assembling the program? There could be a variety of tracks that allowed for more flexible submission processes and more targeted reviewing. These could be crafted to insure space for less “straight” research, performances, activist work, etc. that we want to have a home at AoIR (and that many, including myself, feel that the most recent CFP seems to have disadvantaged). But, there could also be a track for the kind of completed, full papers Nichole is talking about. Then, when it came time to put the program together, the tracks could be jettisoned. The panels would be assembled by a non-track centric logic. So, you might have a panel about X and it might be made up of a completed quantitative study what was submitted as a full paper, a theoretical piece, an ethnographic work in progress, and someone doing activist work. (I’m just randomly naming possibilities.) That way the selection process was more targeted to meet different needs. But, then when we actually got to the conference, those disciplinary (and pragmatic needs) didn’t dictate the interactions. Also, I would love to see more discussion on the list. I, personally, haven’t really participated much until now because that didn’t seem to be the way people were using the list. Having this or some other space for discussion would be great. I really like the idea of webinars. I would be down for some webinars. Best, Sarah

The Armstrong Professor will be working with other game faculty within AIMS and across Miami University that comprise the AIMS Game Center, ranked by the Princeton Review in the top 30 in the U.S. The Armstrong Professor will also teach courses in game design, game art, game scripting and the overall game development process, including on-line instruction; work with students individually on games and undergraduate/graduate thesis work in games design, development, and studies; work with colleagues to advance and develop curricula, and help lead co-curricular activities such as Global Game Jam, game-related student organizations, and client-based projects; maintain an active research program; provide service to the university. Applicants must either hold an MFA or Ph.D; must have an established interest in game design and development demonstrated by past teaching, research, or industry experience; ability to teach courses in game design, game art, game scripting and the overall game development process; experience and/or keen interest in online teaching. For appointment as Associate Professor, require an accomplished research and teaching record meeting Miami’s tenure requirements, including significant peer-evaluated scholarship and/or exhibition along with a record of curricular development and success. Beginning in 2014, the series will consist of two annual volumes bringing together cutting edge research on new media. Thanks to a short publication cycle, authors will see their work in print within 12 months of submission. The series welcomes work from a variety of perspectives from media scholars working in the social sciences, humanities, and related fields such as media studies, information studies, STS, and communication. Submissions may be empirical, theoretical, methodological, or synthetic statements of significant developments in the field. Empirical submissions may make use of any method or approach. Contributions on a wide variety of topics on new media, ICTs, communication, and related themes are welcome from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. For a list of potential themes, please see series' aims and scope. Volume I: Communication and Information Technologies Annual 2014 Each year, one volume will build on the series' newly established association with the Communication and Information Technologies Section of the American Sociological Association (CITASA). This annual volume will feature a selection of contributions that will be highlighted at each year's CITASA business meeting. Volume II: Doing and Being Digital: Mediated Childhoods Volume II will assemble cutting edge research focusing on media and youth. Submissions may examine any aspect of the theme of youth and media broadly defined. Youth is defined as infancy to young adulthood. We also welcome submissions on institutions that shape this part of the lifecourse such as the family, school, community organizations, etc. In addition, we are also interested in submissions that address theoretical and/or methodological issues on the topic. Submissions should be 6,000-12,000 words in length inclusive of abstract, references, and notes. British or American spelling may be used. While no special formatting is requested at the outset, upon acceptance authors must format their manuscripts in accordance with the series' guidelines. Submissions will be considered for inclusion in either volume to achieve the best thematic fit. Contributions will be peer-reviewed through both initial editorial screening and anonymous refereeing by at least two referees.
