Hi all - I generally just lurk, but I was struck by a discontinuity in discussion last Thursday and think it bears on this question of becoming inured to shock. There were 6 posts on "London...the internet accounts" interspersed with 4 on "AoIR 6.0 Chicago 2005 Registration is now open", 1 each on "iCS 8.2", "Call for proposals", and "Internet and fun/joy/pleasure". In the three days since, "London" vanished, some of the other threads continued, and new ones appeared. This is no doubt the nature of most conversations on this list, and perhaps everything that could be said about shock and bearing up and giving sympathy was expressed in the comments that were posted, and/or continuation has moved to other venues. But I had some cognitive dissonance reading the disparate threads as business-as-usual went on for many (including me) while others were wondering just how "usual" their lives were going to continue to be. I'm not familiar with any of the literature on shock, but some levels or layers of protection are evident in the acts of just getting on with things, whatever those immediate things that consume us may be. At the same time, I'm aware it would also be counterproductive (at least to purposes of peace and justice) to mine the event for all its tragedy, as this would play into political efforts to cast the attack in symbolic terms that fuel nationalisms and other hatreds. In response to Greg Elmer's Q to the list: Yes, people with larger networks do use the internet more. We have only cross-sectional data. DOCAM 06 is the fourth Annual meeting of the Document Academy, an international network of scholars, artists and professionals in various fields interested in the exploration of the document as a useful approach, concept and tool in Sciences, Arts, Business, and Society. - Apologies for eventual cross postings - The European network COST 298 Participation in the Broadband Society invites you to actively participate in our research conference in Moscow, 23-25 May 2007. The main objective of the conference is to create new knowledge about users’ creativity and facilitate their empowerment in a broadband information society. This knowledge requires an examination of the factors that can both constrain and enhance users’ abilities to shape and use ICTs. >From our perspective, the ‘broadband society’ refers to a possible, but not inevitable, substantial transformation of our experience of telecommunications based on these technologies allowing information and communication technologies to be used everywhere, all the time and by everybody. Given the widespread aspirations of Governments and companies to achieve this goal, the extent to which any such transformation has occurred needs, of course, to be evaluated in a balanced manner. Broadband technologies have resulted mainly from technological and institutional imperatives. To what extent have potential users managed to find ways in which such technologies can be useful, worthwhile and attractive? We certainly know from previous research this can require those users to be creative in terms of fitting ICTs into their activities or using them to find solutions to the everyday problems that they already encounter. But how much is being demanded of those users, what considerations have a bearing upon whether these technologies actually find a place in their lives and what new issues, of indeed problems, can these ICTs themselves create, especially if they really are ‘disruptive technologies’? Ultimately, we also need to acknowledge that users may well decide that their existing solutions suffice, in which case these new technological options may find only a modest place in their lives. Indeed, they may even be resisted or ignored. Whatever strategies users employ for assessing and dealing with such innovations, we need to learn more about these social processes, including strategies for dealing with the up and coming generation of new information and communication products and services. Only by so doing can we hope to empower them further in their relationships to technology and through this hope to increase the quality of their lives. In this conference, the organisers - COST Action 298 <http://coference.cost298.org> - invite technology and product developers, designers, social scientists, policy makers, community representatives and others who are interested in the conference topics, to join our attempt to develop this discussion on a common, shared and transdisciplinary ground. We ask participants to 1) strive to present their topic from a human-centric point of view as opposed to a technology-, product- or business-centric one, and to 2) present their topic in a language that attempts to transcend disciplinary boundaries, a language that non-experts can also understand, and to 3) not only report on their work, but also to engage in the conference debate which aims to develop ways to understand the interests of people and society, to evaluate developments against such an evolving understanding, and to chart interesting and desirable future directions. Jansen (The Pennsylvania State University) Amanda Spink (Queensland University of Technology) Isak Taksa (Baruch College) INTRODUCTION Web search engines have emerged as one of the dominant technologies today, leaving few aspects of our lives untouched. Search applications on individual Web sites are increasingly important for people to locate needed information. Analyses of customer interactions within Web sites provide insight into user intent. Ecommerce Web sites leverage customer actions to provide better services and products. Millions of people build relationships on social networking Web sites. For these and a variety of other domains, both academic and industry researchers increasingly use Web logs to study the interactions between people and Web services. Important issues are arising, including the logging techniques used, the process of data collection and cleaning, how to analyze the data, ensuring privacy, building trust, and which quantitative and qualitative techniques produce the best understanding of user behavior. THE OVERALL OBJECTIVES OF THE BOOK The edited book, “Handbook of Web Log Analysis”, will provide an understanding of Web log analysis methods and processes. This book will provide an understanding of the tools and techniques used to analyze Web logs, including quantitative and qualitative methods. Each chapter will push forward our understanding of Web log analysis from various perspectives, including research from information science, computer science, information systems, communications, among others. The book will critically examine the significant issues, theories, and techniques surrounding Web log analysis. Topics include, but are not limited to, analysis of: search engines, single Websites, search applications, e-commerce sites, blogs, recommender systems, digital libraries, personal information repositories, multimedia collections, social networking sites, listservs, and the burden of addressing privacy and trust in any such logging application. Manuscripts should focus primarily on theories, models, processes, approaches, challenges, limitations, or tools of Web log analysis and not on empirical results. THE TARGET AUDIENCE The books is intended for use by information technology professionals, Web site designers, ecommerce organizations, information architects, search engine developers, and researchers involved in various aspects of understanding the customers and users of Web sites. SUBMISSION PROCEDURE Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before 1 January 2007, a 2-5 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by 1 February 2007 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by 01 May 2007. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis.
