Confirmed Speakers Dr. Carsten Sørensen Information Systems and Innovation Group, Department of Management, London School of Economics Dr. Theresa Senft School of Social Sciences, Media and Cultural Studies, University of East London It is clear that the boundaries between the public¹ and the private¹ are becoming increasingly blurred within and amongst sites of home and work. Indeed, in the wake of reality television shows, national identity card schemes, increased social media usage and the like, publicity appears to be the order of the day. For this workshop we seek papers that discuss the issues raised for those living in environments where there is seemingly little room for privacy. As was the case last year, we intend for the workshop to be multi-disciplinary in nature, broad in the approaches participants take and issues they cover. If your work is about any aspect of digital culture, this is the workshop for you! The following are thus only indicative of potential topics that could be raised: ·How do people domesticate social media in their attempts to maintain a balance in publicity and privacy? Do they? Why do they, or don¹t they? ·What matters are raised by increased access to data about individuals and organizations? ·What does the blurring of boundaries between public and private mean for our knowledge and experiences of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity and disability? ·How are ICT mediated spaces created and maintained at home, work and those spaces in between? For example, how are geek gamers¹ finding spaces to play now the only console in the house can be in the living room? ·How are ICT policies shaping public and private spaces throughout societies around the world? ·What privacy issues are presented by media convergence? ·What role are mobile and ubiquitous computing technologies playing in public and private spaces? ·How is the increased commodification of social media affecting our privacy? Following from the first workshop we continue to see this workshop having three purposes. First, we seek to give voice and structure to existing new media, ICT and technology related research which may not readily sit within conventionally accepted areas. Second, we wish to draw in research on new forms of digital technology, ICT, computing, organizing and social interactions. Third, we want to continue discussions regarding potential futures for ICT related research which combine research as related to the evolving forms and functions of work organizations and the changing boundaries and relations between these organizations and their social milieus. We seek abstracts (of up to 600 words) that focus upon some aspect of digital culture. We hope to have a special issue of a journal associated with the workshop as was the case last year (a special issue of the Journal of Information, Communication, Ethics and Society is to be published early in 2009). This will cover refreshments and meals throughout the workshop and a workshop dinner to be held on the evening of the 4th of June. There is no fee for PhD students, however they still need to register for the workshop. Re: new media and shock

Hi all - I generally just lurk, but I was struck by a discontinuity in discussion last Thursday and think it bears on this question of becoming inured to shock. There were 6 posts on "London...the internet accounts" interspersed with 4 on "AoIR 6.0 Chicago 2005 Registration is now open", 1 each on "iCS 8.2", "Call for proposals", and "Internet and fun/joy/pleasure". In the three days since, "London" vanished, some of the other threads continued, and new ones appeared. This is no doubt the nature of most conversations on this list, and perhaps everything that could be said about shock and bearing up and giving sympathy was expressed in the comments that were posted, and/or continuation has moved to other venues. But I had some cognitive dissonance reading the disparate threads as business-as-usual went on for many (including me) while others were wondering just how "usual" their lives were going to continue to be. I'm not familiar with any of the literature on shock, but some levels or layers of protection are evident in the acts of just getting on with things, whatever those immediate things that consume us may be. At the same time, I'm aware it would also be counterproductive (at least to purposes of peace and justice) to mine the event for all its tragedy, as this would play into political efforts to cast the attack in symbolic terms that fuel nationalisms and other hatreds. the growth of some groups and not others

The standard design philosophy currently being used in many social network systems is to encourage the user to sign into the site and duplicate functions like exchanging messages in different formats. For many users this is too much a waste of time in that most important things are carried out by the user in their current message environment. The addition of groups that social networks finally recognized (they existed in some systems in the 70's) as a key valuable addition to communication systems will spread and be better integrated in message services. I also note that some social networks are making it easier to handle social network functions without signing in and leaving your normal environment. Like many of you I currently am in 4 different network social systems and within groups within those. (for more information, please contact the panel's organizer, Carly Kocurek <carlykocurek(a)mail.utexas.edu> ) Call for Panelists: Video Gaming, Citizenship, and Civic Engagement in the United States DEADLINE: January 10 "Video Gaming, Citizenship, and Civic Engagement in the United States," panel for the American Studies Association Annual Meeting, Washington D.C., November 5-8, 2009 The Pew Internet and American Life Project has found that 97 percent of children and 53 percent of adults in the United States play video games. These numbers suggest that gaming is quickly becoming ubiquitous. As video games have become a key part of mainstream popular culture in the United States, they have also become key texts through which notions of national identity are developed and deployed. This panel will look at games as sites of articulation for civic engagement, citizenship, cultural values and identity, asking panelists to consider how "American-ness" and "American values" are articulated through and around video games. All disciplinary approaches are welcome. Potential topics might include: —America's Army and U.S. military recruiting and training as gameplay. —Guitar Hero as it relates to American popular music —The Sims' ambivalent capitalist ethic —Urban planning and gaming (Sim City, Scalable City, PlastiCity, etc.) —The transnational nature of online economies and virtual wealth in MUDs and MMORPGs and the complexity of state intervention —American-made video games in global culture —Virtual and real-life crime as it relates to gaming Other topics are encouraged, as these are included only as a non-exclusive jumping off point.
