Hi all - I generally just lurk, but I was struck by a discontinuity in discussion last Thursday and think it bears on this question of becoming inured to shock. There were 6 posts on "London...the internet accounts" interspersed with 4 on "AoIR 6.0 Chicago 2005 Registration is now open", 1 each on "iCS 8.2", "Call for proposals", and "Internet and fun/joy/pleasure". In the three days since, "London" vanished, some of the other threads continued, and new ones appeared. This is no doubt the nature of most conversations on this list, and perhaps everything that could be said about shock and bearing up and giving sympathy was expressed in the comments that were posted, and/or continuation has moved to other venues. But I had some cognitive dissonance reading the disparate threads as business-as-usual went on for many (including me) while others were wondering just how "usual" their lives were going to continue to be. I'm not familiar with any of the literature on shock, but some levels or layers of protection are evident in the acts of just getting on with things, whatever those immediate things that consume us may be. At the same time, I'm aware it would also be counterproductive (at least to purposes of peace and justice) to mine the event for all its tragedy, as this would play into political efforts to cast the attack in symbolic terms that fuel nationalisms and other hatreds. In response to Greg Elmer's Q to the list: Yes, people with larger networks do use the internet more. We have only cross-sectional data. DOCAM 06 is the fourth Annual meeting of the Document Academy, an international network of scholars, artists and professionals in various fields interested in the exploration of the document as a useful approach, concept and tool in Sciences, Arts, Business, and Society. It is organized and co-sponsored by The Program of Documentation Studies, University of Tromso, Norway and School of Information, University of California, Berkeley. proposal for an AoIR Newsletter

Dear AoIR colleagues I'd like to float the idea of developing an AoIR newsletter. This venture would need to be a team effort and this email is primarily intended to try and sound out support for the idea, and to find out if anyone is interested in working on this. As with all AoIR activity this would be volunteer labour with the attraction of being a great experience. If you want to find out more about AoIR activities, people, resources and related events/work/issues, or if you are an expert in these areas already, this would be a great opportunity to share and develop skills, and enhance or make new connections, and I'm hoping it would also be enjoyable. I'd like to produce two issues, post them to the list, and see what the feedback is. I've got ideas for structure, content, process and resources which I'm happy to discuss further with anyone interested in helping put this together. At this point I'm looking for people from the AoIR membership to act as an editorial team for the newsletter, to input ideas for its structure and content, and to collate AoIR news - in this first and (experimental) instance this would be for 2 newsletters. The main objective is to provide something of value to AoIR, through consolidating communication and links across AoIR, and bringing together information of interest. At this point another important aim is to establish if a newsletter would in fact be useful, and what kind of format, shape and delivery would best serve AoIR - I'm approaching that question by trying it out. If you would be interested helping plan this, and in making up an editorial team, to write and edit a newsletter, and collate AoIR activity, please let me know as soon as possible, and I'll coordinate efforts, both to get an AoIR newsletter together, and to evaluate the process for the first 2 editions. In terms of time lines I'm hoping to get a first issue out soon - this autumn if at all possible. Many thanks for your time in reading this so far - please think about it and email me if you have any questions and/or interest in taking part (in the next 2 to 3 weeks please), volunteers very wellcome! Hey everybody, I've been lurking here for awhile, but haven't gotten around to posting anything yet. So, before I hit y'all up with a question, I just thought I would say hello. erm... hello... So, here's the question: Does anybody know of any research out there on the demographics (I'm thinking specifically of income range, but age, gender, race and other data would also be of interest) of craigslist users? I have an idea for a research project along those lines, but I don't want to re-invent the wheel.
