Re: [Air-l] ARPAnet history question
by Jay Hauben 29 Aug '06

Dear Ulla. About the ARPANET, one node a month were brought up each month in late 1969. Each site had an IMP. The 4 IMPS formed the communications subnetwork. To each IMP was attached a host. These hosts were time sharing systems. Therefore the number of terminals or even computers connected via the 4 node ARPANET was more than 4. The history of the ARPANET and timesharing can be seen in chapters 6, 7 and 8 of "Netizens: On the History and Impact of Usenet and the Internet by Michael Hauben and ronda Hauben". An online version is at: http://www.columbia.edu/~rh120 The hard cover edition was published by the IEEE Computer Science Press in 1997. On August 30, 1969, the first IMP arrived at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) which was to be the first site of the new network. It was connected to the SDS Sigma 7 computer at UCLA using the GENIE operating system. Shortly thereafter IMPs were delivered to the other three sites in this initial testbed network. At Stanford Research Institute (SRI), the IMP was connected to an SDS-940 computer using the SEX operating system. At the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), the IMP was connected to an IBM 360/75 using OS/MTV. And at the University of Utah (Utah), the fourth site, the IMP was connected to a DEC PDP-10 using the TENEX operating system. By the end of 1969, the first four IMPs had been connected to the host computers at their individual sites and the network connections between the IMPs were operational. The researchers and scientists involved could begin to identify the problems they had to solve to develop a working network where there would be communication from host to host. The first sites of the ARPANET were picked to provide either network support services or unique resources. The key services the first four sites provided were(24): UCLA - Network Measurement Center SRI - Network Information Center UCSB - Culler-Fried interactive mathematics UTAH - graphics (hidden line removal) A much cited version of The Untold History of the ARPANET is http://www.dei.isep.ipp.pt/docs/arpa.html)

JITP Launches and Seeks Reviewers and Editorial Board Members
by Stuart Shulman 29 Aug '06

29 Aug '06

Folks, I am writing to you to announce the launch of the Journal of Information Technology & Politics, (www.jitp.net) and to invite the members of the list interested in this subfield to join our reviewer and editorial board database by completing a brief web survey at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=90162489434 If anyone has already completed a variant of this survey (under the auspices of seeking feedback on what was then the Journal of E-Government) there is no reason to complete the survey again. We have ~200 completed surveys and a very large and growing database of potential reviewers. There is considerable excitement amongst this group about the direction of this journal. We plan to use a tailored database to make sure JITP reviewers get only the articles they really want to review and at a rate that is set by each reviewer. We are also building a sizable full editorial board out of this reviewer database. It includes graduate students making a mark and planning a career in ITP studies. If people are interested in the governance of JITP, they should take 10 minutes visit the survey, or else e-mail me directly to tell me about your ideas and interests relating to JITP. Thanks, Dr. Stuart Shulman Editor, JITP -- _____________________________________________ Dr. Stuart W. AOL and research ethics
by Barry Wellman 29 Aug '06

Besides legal stuff, it's clear that AOL didn't follow what's SOP procedures for preserving respondent, privacy in the social sciences. They thought they were by not directly releasing user-holder's name and accounts, but were so eager to be helpful that they didn't sanitize the data well. Always a concern, but one routinely dealt. OK, I gotta stop myself or else I go on another rant about computer scientists not knowing any social science -- in this case methods. ARPAnet history question
by Bunz, Ulla 29 Aug '06

29 Aug '06

When ARPAnet connected the four universities in 1969, were there only actually four computers connected to each other? If not, does anyone know how many? A source (not Wikipedia or your personal memory) for this information would be much appreciated. (Re: 1. maybe a silly question.. but (radhika gajjala) thread) Hi Radhika and AoiRers, I was having a very similar conversation about Livejournal vs YouTube (vs MySpace) and the vague consensus we left with was the livejournal was a social networking system since it is often (primarily?) used as conversation space, as emphasised by the Friends lists (which is basically an embedded RSS reader with fancy livejournal avataring). YouTube wants to be a social networking system where conversations flow across the various YT videos, but it's in a pretty primitive stage. This is particularly evident since the most popular YouTube-related social networking happens on a different website focused on YouTube (the YouTube Talk site: http://youtubetalk.com/) Sadly, MySpace seems to offer social networking functionality beyond YouTube (since many, many YouTube directors points their fans/commentators to their MySpace pages for networking purposes) and MySpace is probably the best popular middle-ground for media and social networking, despite the fact that its design can, at best, be described as horrifically ugly! Just my ten cents ... Btw, as an Australian AoIRer, I'm very much looking forward to seeing many of you in sunny BrisVegas in less than a month! Please CLICK <https://www.ideologiesofwar.com/register/workshop/> HERE for further information and to register for the Presentation and Workshop "Something to Kill and Die For" with Richard A. Koenigsberg, PhD _____ Workshop Description: What are the causes of collective political violence? What events or motivations bring religious and political leaders-and the people they represent-to give over lives and resources to armed conflict? What justifies the sacrifices made in war and terrorism? In 1994, Dick Cheney appeared on "Meet the Press" and stated that Haiti was "not worth American lives." Senator Glenn suggested that the case for intervention could not pass the "Dover Test"-the televised return of body bags. In the twenty years since Viet Nam, only about 400 U. S. soldiers had been killed in action. For a time, it seemed that the grand narrative of warfare had lost its appeal. Then, the events of September 11th, 2001 changed everything. The United States responded-not only to the actions of the terrorists, but to the taunting words of Bin Laden, who addressed Americans declaring: "Your most disgraceful case was in Somalia. When tens of your soldiers were killed in minor battles and one American pilot was dragged through in the streets of Mogadishu you left the area carrying disappointment, humiliation, defeat and your dead with you. The extent of your impotence and weaknesses became very clear." The subsequent American response to Bin Laden's provocation served to demonstrate-in no uncertain terms-that the United States was not weak; that Americans too possessed ideals and strength of conviction for which they were willing to kill and die. We now find ourselves-again-in the midst of a world of political violence-a world that we seemed to be on the verge of leaving behind. Were the events of September 11, 2001 responsible for the world-wide struggle in which we now find ourselves? Or is a deeper psychology at work, driving people on all sides of the conflict to seek out "something to kill and die for?" John Lennon asked people to imagine a world with "nothing to kill or die for." Post-modernism proposed the "death of grand narratives," while multiculturalism and globalization articulated the desire to abandon rigid boundaries. Now we seem to have returned to the bipolar, cold-war narrative of a global clash between antagonistic ideologies. Using case studies from history-as well as contemporary examples-this workshop will explore the dynamics of collective forms of violence such as terrorism and war; the motives that generate killing and dying in the name of religious and national ideals. Please CLICK <https://www.ideologiesofwar.com/register/workshop/> HERE for further information and to register for the Presentation and Workshop "Something to Kill and Die For" with Richard A. Koenigsberg, PhD _____ Who Should Attend: Teachers, students and practitioners from the disciplines of psychology, psychiatry, psychoanalysis, anthropology, sociology, political science, international relations and diplomacy. Scholars and students focusing on the topics of conflict resolution, peace and war studies, militarism, nationalism, ethnic conflict, political psychology, and terrorism; journalists wishing to explore the deeper roots of today's conflicts; and the educated layperson seeking to comprehend the sources of collective forms of violence in the Twntieth and Twenty-First Centuries. _____ Learning Objectives: Through presentation and discussion, participants will explore: * The nature of attachment to "sacred objects" that transforms violence into a form of virtue * The human tendency to bifurcate the world into categories of "good" and "evil." * The need for and symbolic meaning of enemies. * The relationship between martyrdom and sacrifice * Why wars are difficult to end. _____ About the Presenter: Richard A. Koenigsberg received his PhD in Social Psychology from the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research in New York City. His highly acclaimed books-Hitler's Ideology, The Psychoanalysis of Racism, Revolution and Nationalism, Symbiosis and Separation: Towards a Psychology of Culture, and Dying for One's Country: War as Sacrifice-established a method and theory for the psychological analysis of political ideology. _____ The Church Center for the United Nations is located across the street from United Nations headquarters. Tours are available at the Visitors' Lobby of the General Assembly seven days a week from 9am to 5pm.
