September 28-29, 2006 The theme of this seminar series is the use of RFID (radio frequency identification) in supply chains. Sessions will address the massive interest in this old technology, which is changing the landscape of integrated supply chains. The use of RFID ranges from asset tracking to cashless payment to homeland security, and more. AOIRcamp: For the rest of us...

Hello all, Ever since the AOIRcamp idea was shared with the rest of the AIR-listserv, I've received correspondence from several interested parties. The most important thread was understandably about "competing events". The purpose of AOIRcamp is to provide a choice for folks who prefer to craft their own activities, in an informal and commercial-free setting. AOIRcamp also happens to demonstrate the sustainability of emergent + participatory forms of social gathering within an academic domain. That said, I think it would be premature to say that AOIRcamp will offer competition to existing programs. I see it more as having a complimentary relationship, since those of us who originally won't be attending such events could still get together and produce (e.g. rather than to wander the Brisbane streets alone, we could wander together). Scaling down, I'd like to try and have a meetup in a public space. For the benefit of those who can't be there, anything we talk about should be shared online via blogs, wikis, podcasts (w/ real-time skype conference if possible). Using freely available tools to accomplish all this would be super. Things WILL NOT go as planned, but that how it'll work. For now, someone suggested meeting at the Queen Street Mall since they have ample outdoor space and possibly free wifi. Michael, You are right there is loss of control, but you have to give a damn for it to be a problem. I go to conferences for the same reason I joined AOIR and this list serve. To meet people with whom I share a common interest. As the saying goes, "You have to kiss a lot of toads to find a princess (or a prince)." I found it very efficient in weeding out the toads from the princesses. Control was lost with the amount of information I gave up at registration, not at the chance encounter. In any event it was helpful in finding people of interest. The tool of RFID and its potential is cross-disciplinary, enables potential not available previously and is revolutionary for social research. Subjects can opt in or out. In reality it is no different than research on social groups using the internet except the network is smaller and easier to manage. Reid ________________________________ Dr. W. Dear Kevin, I'm not speaking on behalf of the AoIR 2006 conference organising committee, but I personally think that it is unfair of you to position this initiative in direct competition with official AoIR conference events such as the conference dinner. The more people are expected to attend a conference dinner, the less it will cost to stage it per person and the more diverse and rewarding the experience will be. I think your idea is great and the event you propose would be lots of fun, but I suggest you work with us to make this a successful conference by contacting the conference organisers, Fay, Axel and Matthew, to find a free spot in the conference's social program and to book an appropriate venue at QUT. Introducing AOIRcamp: Un-conference for IR7.0 goers

Hello, For those of you heading to AoIR's IR:7.0 conference in Brisbane next month, please take note of this. I'd like to organize a special meetup which would give us something cheap but useful to do during our conference afterhours. Introducing AOIRcamp. What is AOIRcamp? This free social event is meant as an alternative to the other conference events (e.g. $42 conference dinner). AOIRcamp is based on BarCamp (http://barcamp.org/TheRulesOfBarCamp) which is an ad-hoc un-conference movement born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is a fun event with discussions, demos and interaction from attendees. NO SPECTATORS, ONLY PARTICIPANTS. All attendees can give a demo, a session, or help with one. All presentions are scheduled the day they happen. This event will be a collective effort. What can I do at AOIRcamp? You could do anything that would interest a group of people like ourselves. Several group sessions can happen at the same time. Someone could create a slot on the wall to talk about "building social networks", while another could take a slot to talk about "subverting social networks". On-location gaming is also encouraged since it could inspire future research (e.g. Nintendo DS wifi gaming = ad-hoc architectures). If you don't wish to talk, you could be a sponsor. Even bringing pizza, drinks or whatever would be better than coming empty-handed. But all this isn't going to happen out of thin air. Besides volunteers, this unique event also needs a decent-sized room for us to camp in. Ideally a conference room with free WiFi.
