I’m looking for GitHub repositories that are used for things other than software, especially where users are actively collaborating rather than just putting together static collections. So far, we have found a few books being written, some musical transcriptions being error-checked, and some policy documents maintained online. Does anyone know of any examples of these or other categories? Any pointers much appreciated. Happy to share what we find with anyone interested. We invite case studies of how mutual hostilities between actors are pursued through technological change, whereby each actor seeks to gain an edge against their adversary. Three empirical fields that exemplify this dynamic are the surge of legal highs, information security and crypto-currencies. More examples of the same thing can be found in other fields of empirical investigation and suit this panel. What we will examine under the label of "outlaw innovation" is how conflict breeds innovation. Related to this is an awareness of the tenuous relation between legislation and innovation. The "outlaw" is just another word for an innovator. Concurrently, however, capitalism strives relentlessly to subsume and integrate its own outside, turning this unknown into innovation and new markets. >From this observation follows that the purported outsider position ascribed to various grassroots innovators, users, etc., must be scrutinized. States, capital and academic actors work in conjunction with these outlawed/independent researchers to produce a shared language of common concerns around risks and opportunities inherent in technological innovation, such as in the Tor project. The legal grey zone thus emerges as an incubator of innovation for legal businesses. Would you like to submit an article to an interdisciplinary article collection on "Big Data Ethics"? In collaboration with the journals (Frontiers in) Genetics, Pharmacology, Sociology, ICT, and Digital Humanities, we are organizing an interdisciplinary article collection on "Big Data Ethics" (Guest Editors: Dov Greenbaum, Daniel R. Thomas). The aim of this project is to bring together international experts to provide a comprehensive view of this topic. Would you like to participate as a contributing author? Manuscripts will be peer-reviewed by experts in the relevant field and, if accepted for publication, will be free to access for all readers, and indexed in relevant repositories. This interdisciplinary collection is cross-listed across several journals and so you will need to submit your article via the journal relevant to your field so that your article is in scope of both the collection and the journal. The abstract submission deadline is 30th March but you do not have to submit an abstract in advance, this is so that we can tell you if your article seems to be in scope before you go to the trouble of writing it. It will also help us ensure we get a balance of articles across different disciplines by allowing us to spot any gaps. The manuscript deadline is 31 August 2018 but you can submit before then and the review and publication process will begin immediately. One outstanding challenge is how to build information systems which promote accountability, as part of a wider debate on fairness, accountability, and transparency principles (e.g., ACM FAT*). This need for accountability must be reflected on all layers of systems engineering, ranging from process analysis to concrete technical components and primitives employed during implementation. Based on our existing research we believe that three specific areas of information systems research are most relevant in this context: user cognition and human behaviour in relation to the design of interfaces; automated decision-making systems and decision-support systems; critical business processes with a particular need for accountability. In all these and further areas, accountability in complex information systems needs to be addressed through technical mechanisms. Existing high-level considerations on accountability in information systems notwithstanding, however, the concrete engineering and implementation of such mechanisms has so far received only limited attention. Similarly, the challenges arising during such transformations of abstract accountability concepts into concrete technologies as well as the critical evaluation of respective implementations are only rarely covered by existing research. We see this workshop as an opportunity to close these gaps through engaging with the existing debate on accountability while integrating key knowledge from the information systems community. Importantly, our approach to accountable systems is not just focused on high level norms of system development, but indispensably also incorporates practical questions of engineering and designing actual systems. We therefore encourage submissions from the above-mentioned and other areas of accountability engineering as long as they sufficiently incorporate questions of concrete systems engineering and implementation. instagramming space and place

Hi all, This looks like a wonderfully active, international community and I am new here, so I am also jumping on the bandwagon with an introduction and request for resources. For my doctoral research, I am looking at the varied ways that urban-focused instagrammer (sub)cultures narrate, inhabit and experience space and place through their photographic practices/social media activities (the research is qualitative, using in-depth interviews and ethnography). I am also looking at ways that the concept "instagrammable" has created new avenues and imperatives for city- and community-level placemaking initiatives. I would like to know of any recent articles/research dealing with similar themes; I am especially keen to find out how others have approached Instagram users' (or other platforms) practices qualitatively. I want to make sure I'm not overlooking valuable scholarship that maybe hasn't come across my radar yet, and also to get to know other scholars working in similar methodological/thematic areas. Smart computing is based on the synergistic combination of advances in Sensor-based technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical Systems, Edge computing, Big Data analytics, Machine Learning, Cognitive Computing, and Artificial Intelligence. Smart computing is a multidisciplinary domain. Applications of smart computing can be found in different societal domains including, but not limited to, transportation, energy, environmental protection, smart and connected communities, healthcare, banking, entertainment, and social media.
