Non-software uses of GitHub

I’m looking for GitHub repositories that are used for things other than software, especially where users are actively collaborating rather than just putting together static collections. So far, we have found a few books being written, some musical transcriptions being error-checked, and some policy documents maintained online. Does anyone know of any examples of these or other categories? Any pointers much appreciated. Happy to share what we find with anyone interested. internet studies book list

Hi all — I emailed the list earlier in the year asking if anyone knew of any bibliographies of 1) books, specifically 2) in the field of Internet Studies, broadly defined. The reason for my question was I’m asking my students to write a book review of a monograph in the field for my class <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rshp8enFUQ2_vfuSHN88twwQXxXiDRYx_NTPU2i…> this spring, and wanted to give them a resource so they could find something in their interest area. A few people responded asking me to let them know if I found anything, but I didn’t, nor could my departmental librarian. There are plenty of syllabi for a topic area across many forms of scholarship (articles, books, films, etc), but nothing I could find for books, specifically. So my TA and I built a Google Form <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf_WaVIdg9Rh--nodpMWYKpLSj03zxouh5…> to help us make one. If you enter in the ISBN number of a book, it queries the Google Books API and populates the results to a public spreadsheet here <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ik83LPyjjqQLfWim53CEObnXdiVDqSkGJ0l…>. It pulls in the book description (from the publisher) and the subject areas (from the LoC), so that it is (reasonably) searchable. My TA and I just started entering in some books from our syllabus and some books that popped into our head, but I wanted to send it out to AoIR in case anyone here wants to contribute or use the list. If you want to contribute — please do! We’ve tried to make it as easy as possible, and you should definitely blast your own books into here, or those of friends, or whatever. It’s a work in progress and we’ll be figuring it out as we go along but hopefully it’s a helpful resource for someone (beyond just my students this term). Best, — Chris

Call for or Papers: Symposium on Misinformation and Global Communication

Online Media and Global Communication Call for or Papers: Symposium on Misinformation and Global Communication Digital media technology has accelerated the spread of false or misleading information, particularly amid the pandemic of COVID-19, making it a global social concern and an emerging research topic for various social science disciplines. To date, a variety of scholarship has investigated the various forms of misinformation, their spreading patterns, methods of detection and dispelling, the causes and effects of misinformation, etc. However, more research is still needed to address the global dissemination of misinformation. We are soliciting extended abstracts or full papers for a variety of presentations at our symposium, “Misinformation and Global Communication,” to be held on March 12, 2022, in Shanghai. The symposium will take a hybrid format, consisting of in-person and virtual meetings. We welcome innovative and original research proposals addressing the theme of our symposium from all disciplines, methodologies, and professions, including case studies, quantitative and qualitative research, data and network science, etc. Some possible topics include but are not limited to: * Misinformation, disinformation, and fake news on social media * COVID-19 misinformation * The effects of misinformation on audience * Comparative Study on fake news * Fact-checking * New methodologies to study misinformation * The ethic of misinformation * Digital literacy on misinformation * Misinformation inventions * The cultural implications of misinformation * Other related topics Please submit an abstract or research proposal with a minimum of 500 words for your presentation. Decisions for the conference presentation will be communicated on February 25, 2022. High-quality articles will be selected to present at our symposium “Misinformation and Global Communication,” co-sponsored by the School of Journalism and Communication at Shanghai International Studies University, Center for Global Public Opinion of China, and the Online Media and Global Communication (OMGC) journal. OMGC is a new free open-access English language referred journal published quarterly by De Gruyter and sponsored by Shanghai International Studies University. It aims to publish high quality, innovative and original research on global communication, especially in the use of global online media platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, Weibo, WeChat, Wikipedia, websites, blogs, etc., in an effort to make theoretical contributions under the contextual scenarios of and based on practices of online media and global communication, particularly in but not limited to the Global South. New research report by the Data Justice Lab: Civic Participation in the Datafied Society

Dear all, today the Data Justice Lab at Cardiff University is publishing a new research report on "Civic Participation in the Datafied Society". You can download it (pdf) here: https://datajusticelab.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/CivicParticipation_Da… The report addresses a key problem of datafication: Although data systems are rapidly rolled out in the public sector, there is little public knowledge about these developments, with few possibilities to intervene into, and participate in, decisions about datafication. How, then, do we advance people’s voice in the deployment of data and AI? How do we democratise datafied governance? In the report, we explore different ways in which citizens are – and can be - involved in these decisions which are fundamentally transforming societies. We investigate the roles of citizen juries and citizen summits, oversight and advisory institutions, civil society campaigns, alternative discourses and infrastructures, and efforts to advance data literacy, as well as the shortcomings of existing processes. While there is a lack of institutional procedures for meaningful participation, we found many promising practices and proposals that establish a more central role for citizens in decisionmaking over data. Our research shows that the democratisation of datafied governance is a key challenge for contemporary societies. The report provides a comprehensive set of findings from the 3-year research project "Towards Democratic Auditing: Civic Participation in the Scoring Society" which was funded by the Open Society Foundations and involved a wide range of interviews with experts and practitioners, observations of relevant practices, and fact-finding workshops.
