Dear all, I am happy to share the Call for Papers for the Special Issue: ‘Pop Politics on a Mutable Screen’ on Northern Lights: Film & Media Studies Yearbook (https://www.intellectbooks.com/northern-lights-film-media-studies-yearbook) Special Issue: ‘Pop Politics on a Mutable Screen’ The contemporary challenges facing the political culture are to be seen as risks to the well-being and proper functioning of democratic systems. A functioning democracy requires that the role of the media, as vehicles of political socialization, but also as instruments of participation and public opinion, be taken into account. Consequently, the media are seen as both parts of the problem and part of the solution. The scope of the Special Issue, ‘Pop Politics on a Mutable Screen’, attempts to broaden the vision of political communication beyond hard news and to consider that the messages received by the audience increasingly include soft news and media associated with entertainment and popular culture. From cinema and television to video games, through the different social platforms and the figure of the prosumer. For this thematic issue, we invite theoretical and empirical contributions that explore how technological change affects and is affected by political communication processes and what characteristics make up the politainment. We would like to explore a wide range of topics involving political communication, entertainment, digital engagement, platformization, infotainment, screen time and alternative forms of communication as their central themes. Manuscripts that address some of the following thematic lines will be accepted, although the editors will be open to accepting and/or discussing any submission within the spirit of this call for papers: • Audiovisual content platforms with politainment formats, selective consumption, and social audiences. • Viral political content distributed through social media and platforms. • Gamification, politicking and digital games with political content. • Myth and ideology in contemporary video games • Ideological polarization, political spectacularization and hate speech through the reception of information on social networks. • Social algorithms in personalized information dissemination of spectacular political content. • Complexity and political discourses in entertainment contexts. • Mobilization and democratic constraints in the new digital ecosystem of the ideological polarization • Strategic use of entertainment in social networks for online campaigning and political engagement. • Democratic consequences and citizen perception of politainment. • The role of the prosumer of political infotainment on the internet. • Characteristics, transmedia narratives and formats of the new political fiction in cinema and television. • Political storytelling: storytelling by politicians for strategic purposes. • Music entertainment to generate engagement among social audiences and other uses of music by political parties. • New strategies in digital campaigns, disguised advertising through infotainment, and gate-watching techniques to generate campaign content. • Political personification of politics and appearance of the political figure in unusual media and formats. • Representation of politicians in political infotainment content. • Emergence of political movements in new media. • Technification of politics. • Political ethics in infotainment. This guest issue thus explores new lines of work, perspectives, strategies and positionings, and reflects on the possibilities they offer for defining future theoretical, methodological, and active pathways within a communicative field characterized by its continuous evolution in an increasingly uncertain and changing context, but in which the figure of the media and the prosumer is positioned as key elements for the democratization of politics. Wellness is used to market health apps and wearable tech to manage attention, optimise productivity, and find personal meaning. Platform companies design for digital wellbeing to counter public criticisms about the psychological costs of the attention economy. Lifestyle brands promote popular ideas of wellness on social media to sell aspirational supplements and services. These developments flourish at the ideological nexus of digital technology and neoliberal spirituality, which empowers subjects to personal transformation through consumption. At the same time, online wellness communities identifying with new age spirituality have increasingly politicized around conspiracy theories and anti-vaccine activism. This satellite event of the Digital Society @ Manchester brings together critical researchers of wellness to discuss its couplings with neuroscience, alternative health, and conspiracy thinking. Focusing on how wellness configures gender, class, and race through digital technologies, these talks trace unlikely connections between the brain science of algorithms and the neoliberal spirituality of crystals. Speaker extracts: *Bridget Conor – ‘Voices for Freedom’: Wellness and anti-vaxxers in Aotearoa* In this talk I’ll reflect on my experience returning to live in Aotearoa in the last two years whilst also thinking and writing about cosmic wellness. Highly restricted borders, a managed isolation system for arrivals to the country and more recently, vaccine mandates, have ensured relatively low rates of Covid-19 infection. But, perhaps unsurprisingly, anti-vaccine ‘activism’ has increased, fuelled by particular groups and people. The most prominent, Voices For Freedom (VFF), is led by three women whose extracurriculars include paleo diets, DoTerra essential oils and crochet. Most recently, VFF played a visible role in a large anti-government occupation of New Zealand’s parliament grounds. Using VFF as a case, I’ll consider how the group and its leaders alchemise wellness, whiteness and motherhood in this particular place and time. Bridget Conor is Associate Professor of Communication at Waipapa Taumata Rau, the University of Auckland. Her areas of interest include cultural work, inequalities in cultural industries and cosmic wellness. Her most recent publication is the UNESCO report Gender and Creativity: Progress on the Precipice. *Johannes Bruder – Informational Alchemy, ca. 2022. A report on the status of dreaming in digital societies.* Counter to the 20th century fixation on acts of cognition that can be observed in neuroscience and psychology labs, the late 1990s saw a resurgence of research on the dark energy of the brain—what happens in the brain when humans rest. Resting-state neuroscience has since focused on the productive and generative aspects of mind wandering and the digital wellness industry devised apps, techniques and substances that turn slacking and drifting away into productive exercises. A new science of sleep that developed in parallel has uncovered similarities between drifting waking thought and dreaming, which researchers in the field now consider as emotional first aid and a locus for stress-free processing of accumulated memories. Dreaming has in this process become a new territory for self-care and growth: whereas early interventionist paradigms focused on the normalization of sleep patterns to support the recharging of cognitive capacities, the management of REM sleep energies aims at improving emotional resilience and establishing some sort of “informational alchemy”. In my talk, I’ll position this emerging neuropsychology of dreaming in the broader context of wellness in digital societies. Johannes Bruder is a scholar of digital culture with a background in STS and media studies. His current research focuses on psychological categories, sociological models, and speculative designs encoded in digital technologies. His first book “Cognitive Code. Post-Anthropocentric Intelligence and the Infrastructural Brain” (MQUP, 2019) is based on fieldwork in neuroscience laboratories and provides insights into the bio-politics of contemporary machine learning. Johannes has a strong interest in experimental research methods, alternative pedagogies and critical publishing practices that unsettle disciplinary paradigms and render research in the humanities operational in real-world contexts. *Jonathan Corpus Ong – The Grand Conjunction: When Scam Accounts and Shadowbans Target Astrologers on Instagram* Social media and contemporary meme cultures are credited for the exponential popularity of astrology, but astrologers and other spiritual influencers feel they’re left in the dark about platforms’ content policy, monetization opportunities, and account security protocols. Based on interviews and digital ethnography with spiritual practitioners on Instagram, this talk explores how a community habituated into marginality articulates (limited) vernaculars of platform accountability while manifesting competing versions of sustainable spiritual business. Jonathan Corpus Ong is Associate Professor of Global Digital Media in the University of Massachusetts - Amherst. He is the author of two books and over 25 journal articles in the areas of media ethics, humanitarian communication, and digital politics. He is currently Co-Principal Investigator on a National Science Foundation Accelerator Grant (2021-2022) entitled "FACT Champ", which investigates racially targeted misinformation and hate against Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in the wake of Covid-19. This panel brings together studies of textual interaction among dating app users, analysing in detail the interactional features of these encounters. Drawing particularly on Conversation Analysis and cognate areas such as interactional pragmatics, Membership Categorization Analysis (MCA), and Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA), the panel explores a diverse but interrelated set of issues describing communicative practices in online dating. Such issues may involve but are not limited to the ways that users use location information and orient to place to generate topics and to organise offline meetings, the negotiation of gender norms and practices associated with online dating, and the relationship between education, age, and forms of talk. The analyses in the panel are expected to pay attention to the distinctive textual features of these chats such as the structure of actions (e.g. compliments, invitations etc.) and messages (cf. Licoppe 2021), practices involving humour and flirting, and the sequential organization of interaction. Papers could also address the role of profile information in structuring the interaction, the use of particular communicative practices such as emoji, or platform affordances to facilitate particular types of conversation. Together, these papers provide an important advancement on existing studies of face-to-face dating (Korobov 2011; Stokoe 2010; Turowetz & Hollander 2012), and a critical contribution to the small but growing body of work on online dating and language (Kavroulaki 2021; Licoppe 2020; Mortensen 2017; Thompson 2022), showing how modern technologies are radically altering the ways that people manage dating. On *Wednesday 24 August, 2022 - Friday 26 August, 2022* the *Caribbean Telecommunications Unio <https://ctu.int/>*n (CTU) will host the *18th Caribbean Internet Governance Forum <https://ctu.int/event/18th-caribbean-internet-governance-forum-and-youth-ci…>* (CIGF) online. This year, the 18th CIGF will feature a* Caribbean Youth IGF* (CYIGF) and the CIGF will also be held jointly with the inaugural* Internet Governance Forum for Small Island Developing States* (SIDS IGF). Having been discussed as a goal of the DC-SIDS for quite a few years, the SIDS IGF was catalysed by an intervention and offer of support by the CTU SG in 2021. Support for the idea grew given the realisation that SIDS worldwide share similar development challenges and there existed no collective IG forum that addressed SIDS-specific issues. Dear Colleagues, The Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI) is hiring a Systems Administrator to support the DRI technical team based at Trinity College Dublin in delivering Repository services and administering the Repository infrastructure, including managing day-to-day system administration tasks such as monitoring, system upgrades, backups, website administration, and security audits. The role holder will work as part of a small team of Linux oriented software engineers in the DRI group of the Research IT unit in Trinity College IT Services. They will also work closely with other DRI team members in Trinity College Dublin, the Royal Irish Academy, and Maynooth University to identify areas where the Repository functionality can be expanded to better support the aims of DRI as a whole. I posted to this list earlier this year that I am chairing an independent expert group for the Scottish Government on how data controllers in the public sector can address requests for access to the personal data they hold by private sector organisations.
