Re: new media and shock

Hi all - I generally just lurk, but I was struck by a discontinuity in discussion last Thursday and think it bears on this question of becoming inured to shock. There were 6 posts on "London...the internet accounts" interspersed with 4 on "AoIR 6.0 Chicago 2005 Registration is now open", 1 each on "iCS 8.2", "Call for proposals", and "Internet and fun/joy/pleasure". In the three days since, "London" vanished, some of the other threads continued, and new ones appeared. This is no doubt the nature of most conversations on this list, and perhaps everything that could be said about shock and bearing up and giving sympathy was expressed in the comments that were posted, and/or continuation has moved to other venues. But I had some cognitive dissonance reading the disparate threads as business-as-usual went on for many (including me) while others were wondering just how "usual" their lives were going to continue to be. I'm not familiar with any of the literature on shock, but some levels or layers of protection are evident in the acts of just getting on with things, whatever those immediate things that consume us may be. At the same time, I'm aware it would also be counterproductive (at least to purposes of peace and justice) to mine the event for all its tragedy, as this would play into political efforts to cast the attack in symbolic terms that fuel nationalisms and other hatreds. Second Life(R) is a 3d virtual environment created by Linden Lab which has captured the attentions of researchers and teachers from around the world from a variety of disciplines. This workshop aims to improve the understanding of Second Life as a Learning and Research environment. It will bring 35 researchers together to collaborate, discuss and workshop diverse topics related to research and learning in Second Life. We will pursue a full-day schedule in which participants will discuss their work and interests on four different topics: learning in Second Life, integrated learning, the contributions of research to the community and ethical research methods. How can we better enable learning in this sphere? How can we better enable research? As a highlight, Robin Linden will give a talk to the group, and members of Linden Lab will participate throughout the day. We encourage researchers to submit papers and short biography to slworkshop(a)tmttlt.com which will be selected and distributed amongst participants before the workshop. First invitations will be offered to those who provide full papers for consideration. These papers have two purposes: first is to provide a common platform for understanding our research and teaching and second submitted papers may be considered for publication in an edited volume being produced in relation to the workshop, or possibly in peer reviewed publication derived from the workshop (these are currently under discussion). JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: LEMUEL HEIDEL BROWN ENDOWED CHAIR IN MEDIA AND POLITICAL ECONOMY Manship School of Mass Communication, Louisiana State University The Manship School of Mass Communication at Louisiana State University seeks a distinguished scholar for an endowed chair in media and political economy. The intent of this chair is to enhance research and teaching in mass communication and public affairs, specifically the economic/business functions of the media in a democratic society. The rank is negotiable, either associate professor with tenure or full professor with tenure. The successful candidate should have a doctorate in mass communication or a related field such as economics, business, political science, sociology or history, and a distinguished record of teaching and scholarly achievement. Professor Wellman, Since I understand you are retiring and "consolidating offices", have you considered perhaps assisting Vietnamese students and teachers to CRITICALLY read the books you are "exporting" to them? I received a similar request several years ago from my former Department at the University of Nairobi, for old Design books and old computers. I just declined...! I rather proposed to start a locally inspired Design incubator for graduates, to slowly bring them to invent and innovate their own indigenous materials and equipments; eventually with some Canadian remote guidance... But Vietnam's universities do! And are willing to pay for shipping. As I moved to Canada to be a prof. in 1967, that the books will end up in Vietnam is a happy circumstance. Hey, hey, LBJ -- how many books did you burn today? The discussion on this list by Denise, etc strikes a note, as my student just returned from three happy months in rural eastern Ghana. She got to use a computer by bicyling over to the nearby hotel. And her school built a website, even though they don't have a PC. (BTW, she reports that Paris Hilton is the best known American in her area.)
