Dear All, I would like to ask for some advice on visual teaching materials. I am soon to teach ma research stream on 'Internet Governance & Human Rights' for final year JD students at Melbourne Law School. Since I was free to design the course and materials, I thought it would be nice to include some visuals - short videos, interviews, exciting prezis - anything else that would be stimulating and of importance to such course. Anything suggestions either generally on Internet Governance, or digital rights, or Internet & Democracy would be highly appreciated! Meme Tracking

Hi All, I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice (and useful reading ) on tracking Memes. Specifically, I am wondering if there is a way I can take a meme and look at how it has spread and been shared on different social media? I wouldn’t be doing it in real time, more looking back at significant events and how political memes transcended networks and flowed through social media. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. 1st of November 2017, University of Helsinki, Finland Feeling data: emotion and affect in datafied worlds - workshop Scholars working in the interdisciplinary field of ‘critical data studies’ have begun to address the effects of ‘datafication’ - understood as the conversion of qualitative aspects of life into quantified data – on the economy, public life, and self-understanding. The workshop focuses on the emotional properties and affective forces of datafication with the intent of exploring how these perspectives could operate as a fruitful starting point for thinking about future societal trajectories in terms of datafied power, domination, and agency. The goal is to bring together scholars working with questions of the emotional and the affective with the intent of demonstrating how the two research streams could strengthen each other. With a focus on emotional dimensions of datafication, addressing emotional engineering, emotion tracking, and everyday engagements with data, the goal is to explore the communication of the emotional, but also the various kinds of agencies, both human and non-human, that the focus on the emotional can uncover. The exploration of the affective exposes atmospheres, temporalities, energies and rhythms involved in datafication and living with data. Together these research streams point towards the central role that forces such as the non-human, non-quantified, non-linear and non-cognitive play in datafication, raising questions about inequality, discrimination and data in/justice and how to overcome them. Confirmed speakers: Helen Kennedy (University of Sheffield) and Deborah Lupton (University of Canberra) The workshop addresses topics such as: - emotional effects and consequences of data/fication - affective dimensions of data/fication - emotional responses to data/data visualisations/data materialisations - affective atmospheres of data gathering devices, and services - emotional topics and patterns uncovered in small/big data - emotional engineering and emotion tracking - sensory dimensions of data and data materialisations - relationship between emotions, trust and truth in data/fication If you want to participate in the workshop, please submit a 300-word abstract and a short bio to minna.ruckenstein(a)helsinki.fi. Research Data Specialist Digital Repository of Ireland The Digital Repository of Ireland is hiring a Research Data Specialist to lead the planning, development and delivery of research data management capacity at the Digital Repository of Ireland, the national trusted digital repository for Ireland’s social and cultural data. This post is based at the DRI offices at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin. This is a fixed term contract for 12 months, starting no later than 1st October 2017. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- June 28, 2017 Pooley wins of 2017 James Carey Award IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Dr. Jefferson Pooley, associate professor and chair of media and communication at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, is the winner of the 2017 James W. Carey Media Research Award competition sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research ( www.cccsir.com) Pooley is the author of the book, James W. Carey and Communication Research: Reputation at the University’s Margins, published in 2016 by Peter Lang. The Carey Award, established in 2004, is presented annually from among nominated or submitted books or journal articles published in the previous year. The award honors the late Dr. James W. Carey (1934-2006). Dr. Carey was recognized as one of the North American pioneers in applying cultural approaches to the study of mass media. To be worthy of the award, the work must be of highest quality and employ Carey's theories to focus on communication and public life, journalism, or popular culture. The winning entry this year was chosen from an exceptionally strong field of works submitted by a long list of outstanding scholars. As the book cover notes, "Pooley provides a critical introduction to Carey’s work, tracing the evolution of his media theorizing from his graduate school years through to the publication in 1989, of his landmark Communication as Culture. The book is an attempt to understand the unusual if also undeniable significance that Carey holds for so many communication scholars, as well as making his work accessible to advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students." A member of the review committee commented, "One of the virtues of Jeff’s book is that its organization matches the way Carey thought about his intellectual life. Carey would choose, for some number of years, to think about a topic through the work of a particular group of thinkers whose perspectives and voices he found congenial. That is a different and more literary approach to talking about theory than most scholars take. He was less interested in parsing all the nuances of different schools of thought and more concerned with capturing the essence of a writer’s voice and insight. Jeff’s book accurately captures and makes sense of that trajectory of thought." The committee also wishes to honorably mention Dr. Holly Kruse, associate professor of communication at Rogers State University in Claremore, Oklahoma for her book, Off-Track and Online: The Networked Spaces of Horse Racing, for outstanding application of Carey’s theories. The Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research is a non-profit organization established to promote the scholarship of the late Carl J. Couch and his academic associates. Dear colleagues, Please join us early in Tartu for a productive workshop collecting social media data and planning projects! https://aoir.org/aoir2017/preconworkshop/#SMD Libby Social Media Data Bootcamp and Research Hackathon The technical expertise and computational resources required to collect and manage large scale social media data exclude many researchers who have the theoretical expertise to interrogate the data. Several tools have been developed recently by researchers to address these problems, and we introduce a few of those, and their developers, in this workshop. This half-day workshop will help researchers interested in using data from social media platforms get started collecting data and managing their data workflow. We begin with brief overviews (roughly 10 minutes each) of digital research practices (Rogers), big data research project management (Hemphill), and open source tools for social media data collection (Hemsley and Tanupabrungsun). The remainder of the workshop will be structured as a research “hackathon” where participants will actively work in small groups to articulate data needs for specific research projects, draft data collection and management plans, and begin collecting data using existing tools. The organizers all have experience developing tools to facilitate the capture of Internet data for a variety of research ends. They will each introduce some of the available tools and will be on hand to help during the hackathon. Rogers and colleagues have developed a suite of tools under the Digital Media Initiative that facilitate data capture from sources such as GitHub, Instagram, Pinterest, and Tumblr. Hemphill’s lab has developed a project management approach for handling big social data research projects and is involved in building infrastructures for social media data sharing. Hemsley and Tanupabrungsun have developed the Social Media Tracker, Aggregator, and Collector Toolkit that helps researchers quickly spin up data collection projects for Twitter and Facebook. While most of the workshop will focus on data tools and their use, we will also discuss the theoretical and methodological challenges that big social data present. For instance, we will discuss the limitations that platforms place on data available through their APIs, the ethical considerations of “public” data, and the potential for data sharing infrastructures to facilitate social media research. *Call for Applications* We invite participants with a range of expertise studying social media to submit applications. The workshop will be most useful for researchers who have projects or questions in mind but who are unsure about how to get the data they need to answer their questions. Applications should be 300-600 words and should provide the following: 1. A short statement about their experience as a social media researcher – along with research questions, projects, publications, etc. 2. An overview of the research project they would like to work on during the hackathon. This overview should include the specific questions they are addressing and the data challenges they are facing. Because we hope to achieve measurable progress on each participant’s research, we will limit the workshop to no more than 20 participants. We may select up to 20 “observers” who will be invited to attend but whose projects will not be a focus of the hackathon portion.
