Most of all he was a good friend and incomparable mentor for many in the field, and he will be badly missed and long remembered. ====== Sorry if sounds too OT to pay tribute to a dead professor, but Prof. McQuail wrote brilliant works about mass communication, about the relations between media and society, talking about political, social and cultural aspects of freedom of expression, censorship, information of public interest, and so many concepts we study and defend daily... He deserves this last goodbye. It's always sad when a teacher, an author dies. He will live in his works, but it's always strange to me to know you will never say hello again to a person. I never said 'Hello, I love your work!' to Prof. McQuail and now I will never say...

Media Freedom and the Internet FoME Symposium 2017 November 16-17 Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Berlin Hosted by iRights In many countries, not only in the developing world, governments are pushing for more control over the Internet. Censoring content is a growth industry, and Internet and social network shutdowns in response to civil protest and unrest are on the rise. Online surveillance is exploding and people are being increasingly intimidated or detained because of their online activities. Therefore it is vital for civil society and the media to work together in order to shape the Internet of the future and ensure it remains in the service of democracy. And the role of international media assistance needs to be reconsidered in this context. At the core of the symposium will be the following questions: - How to address Internet filtering and blocking in authoritarian regimes? - How to counter “fake news” without stifling freedom of expression? - How to minimize risks emerging from cyber security initiatives? - Should the media development community engage more in the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) processes? - Should media development focus its attention more to international digital media enterprises? - How to regulate or control the expansion of digital surveillance programs? - Should digital information literacy be more prominent on the media development agenda? These and other issues will be discussed at the 2017 symposium of the Forum Media and Development (FoME), taking place in Berlin on November 16-17. The FoME symposium will bring together journalists, media managers, media development specialists, activists, academics and representatives from government and private companies from around the world to exchange views and foster ideas to keep the Internet free and open – for media and citizens around the globe. The symposium is organized and hosted by iRights in cooperation with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung. FoME is an initiative of 20 organisations from German-speaking countries active in international media development, including iRights, Reporters without Borders, CAMECO, Deutsche Welle Akademie, ECPMF, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, Friedrich Naumann Stiftung, IDEM, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and others. Hi all, I really need to know how many new Facebook friendships people make per week, month, year, or whatever unit of time data are available for. I imagine that new users make lots all at once, and that then it flattens out, but I’ve got no idea on average how many new Facebook ties are made by people every month or whatever. Does anyone know? Has anyone seen data on this anywhere? This edited collection, currently under consideration, will serve as a research and methods guide for practitioners interested in conducting large-scale data-driven examinations of writing. Corporations analyze patterns in what people buy, how far they run, where they spend their time; they quantify habits to create more effective advertisements and cross-promotions. In academe, humanities scholars are using computational analysis to identify patterns in literary texts, historical documents, image archives, and sound, all of which has added to the body of knowledge in humanities theory and methodology. Meanwhile, many institutions and writing programs are adopting learning management systems that may digitally archive hundreds – if not thousands or tens of thousands – of student compositions from across levels and disciplines. What is our responsibility, and what is the potential, in harnessing big-data methods as composition researchers, teachers, and administrators? Composition and rhetoric scholars have begun to adopt corpus-based computational analysis both to better understand the field as a whole – through the rhetoric of job postings (Lauer), professional journals (Mueller; Almjeld et al), and dissertation records (Miller; Gatta) – and to research student compositions, the teaching of which is the primary job of most composition and rhetoric scholars. Through data-driven studies of student entrance exams (Aull), citation practices (Jamieson and Moore Howard), revision practices (Moxley), and acknowledgment of counterarguments (Lancaster), scholars have found patterns that distinguish student writing from published academic writing, suggesting areas to target for instruction. This edited collection will model and reflect on the research made possible by high-capacity data storage and computation, either alone or in conjunction with close reading and evaluation in context. Authors are invited to submit abstracts for chapters that focus on the rhetoric, methods, and findings of recent large-scale data studies of writing. We are especially interested in contributions that include replicable practices and/or detailed descriptions of method, with an eye toward graduate-level research, teaching, or administrative applications in the intersecting fields of digital humanities, linguistics, and composition. The following list of topics and questions is not exhaustive, but suggestive, illustrating the range of issues to be taken up: - Data Capture and the Captivation of Data - When we say “big data” in composition what do we mean? What datasets are available, promising, or already producing insight? - What new questions do these datasets allow us to ask or answer? What are their limitations? - How has data gathered from large corpora of (student) writing changed the scholarship and practice of composition / rhetoric? How might such data do so in the future? - Responsible Research - Who is responsible for creating or curating datasets in composition? How might the answers change at different scales? - What are the ethical responsibilities of anyone storing, retrieving, or analyzing composition data – perhaps especially where students and their writing are concerned? - How, should researchers negotiate issues of consent and representation when recording or reporting on data? How is this affected by the scale or scope of the data? - Discourse and Discovery - How can computational tools aid in the qualitative coding of (student) writing? How do these practices relate to traditional coding methods? - What data-supported models of writing practices emerge from the study of digital corpora? - What does or can big data show about the nature of expertise and learning in the context of composing? - Pedagogical Practices - How can the field of composition / rhetoric use data to positively impact pedagogical or andragogical practices? For example, how can data-supported studies improve composition instruction in higher education? - What is the relationship between distant and close reading in regard to assessing student writing? Can and/or should distant reading practices be applied to assessment at the undergraduate level, and in what ways? - What role can analysis of big data play for student researchers in composition / rhetoric? - Supporting a Data-Supported Future - What standards or best practices are emerging for data archiving, aggregation, and interoperability? - How might those new to big-data approaches most usefully manage issues of scope or documentation? - How can we best support new researchers, teachers, or administrators in developing comfort with big-data approaches and insights? During much the 20th century, legacy news media enjoyed a prominent position in attempting to fulfill that role, reporting on happenings near and far. Journalists professionalized over time, developing standards, norms, methods, and networks of sources that enabled them to make knowledge claims. Such epistemological practices—presumed to provide factual and reliable public information—have made journalism one of the most influential knowledge-producing institutions in society. However, both slow and sudden changes are challenging the role of journalism in society. There is an ongoing but gradual shift from legacy media to digital media. On the one hand, this shift has opened new pathways for news access and distribution across an array of platforms—social, mobile, apps, and the like. On the other hand, this shift has generally undercut the business models of legacy news media organizations, resulting in the weakening and downsizing of newsrooms and the fragmenting of collective audiences for news—altogether raising questions about the continued viability of journalism to produce reliable information. Meanwhile, the more sudden change in the information landscape is the rapid expansion of actors that, in some cases, are intent on providing “alternative facts” or otherwise questioning the accounts of news media. This comes at a moment when many people, particularly in developed countries, appear to have little confidence in the press. While some of these sources seek to verify facts in a journalistic fashion, others pursue a deliberate strategy of disinformation for political or financial purposes. The success of such “fake news” has led to widespread debate about what some are calling a “post-truth” era. Altogether, these developments point to many opportunities for research and theory. A general question concerns how the epistemologies of journalism—knowledge claims, norms, and practices—are shaped by the changes and challenges in digital news production. How do journalists know what they know, and how are their knowledge claims articulated and justified? To understand the destabilization of the epistemic status of journalism articulated in current debates, what is needed are empirical studies, historical explanations, and theoretical developments. Moreover, it is essential to better understand how news consumers perceive news, “fake” or otherwise; e.g., how do they evaluate and act upon such claims? Citizens also need media literacy skills to assess the quality of information; what constitutes such literacy, and how does it respond to the knowledge conditions of the contemporary digital environment? As a response to the rise of fake news, several groups have mobilized to investigate information. The functioning and implications of such mobilizations (such as fact-checking movements), as well as digital media tools that aid citizens and professionals in verifying information, are important to analyze to develop our understanding of the production and consumption of more or less verified and non-verified information in a changing news media landscape. For this special issue, the guest editors welcome two kinds of article submissions: theoretically informed and empirically rigorous articles (using quantitative, qualitative, computational, and/or mixed methods), as well as conceptualizations involving systematic and relevant literature reviews. Contributors may address issues including, but not limited to, the following: * The epistemology of different forms of journalism—such as data journalism, which conveys news through the analysis and visualization of numerical data, and participatory journalism, which involves audiences and communities in news construction; * Knowledge-oriented norms, values, and practices applied when publishing and distributing news, accordingly to varying socio-cultural, political, organizational, and technological contexts; * The shifting networks of sources on which journalists and other information professionals rely; * The discursive construction of “truth” and “facts” in the context of news production, distribution, and consumption; * Notions of “fake news,” “post-truth,” and related controversies brought to light by the 2016 U.S. presidential election, and which are applicable also in many other countries and contexts; * The knowledge-oriented practices of news consumers as they encounter purportedly "fake news" and propaganda online (and, by extension, questions of and conceptualizations for media literacy); * Verification on/for social media as well as related forms of technologically driven means of information assessment; * Perceptions and practices of professional footage vis-à-vis amateur footage, including issues of authenticity and authority; * The formation, vision, and practices of initiatives, groups or organizations working toward identifying “fake news,” on behalf of professionals, the public or both; * Comparative perspectives on news consumers and their relative trust in different forms of media processes and products; * The development, appropriation, and use of technological systems and tools for verification.  Information about submission:  Proposals should include the following: an abstract of 500-750 words (not including references) as well as background information on the author(s), including an abbreviated bio that describes previous and current research that relates to the special issue theme. Katz, Ph.D., Dr.H.C. ---------------------------------------------------------- Call for papers International conference Emerging Media: Connection, Innovation & Transformation September 15, 2017 Peking University Beijing, China Emerging media are innovative and interactive technologies used to share ideas, communicate with others and create and co-create content. Examples of emerging media include augmented reality, smart phones, microblogs, dating apps and social networking sites. Emerging media have become crucial as people connect, create, and share new perspectives on the world and on themselves. More than ever, people feel the need, and have the ability, to stay up-to-date with their social circles and to understand the world. Seemingly overnight, and sometimes from mere rented apartments, entrepreneurs are using emerging media to create globe-spanning enterprises, and in the process are transforming the world. With increasing speed and reach, emerging media are also dramatically modifying not only social routines but also the way people experience their interior lives. Given the consequences of emerging media in the economic, political, social and cultural areas, we invite you to participate in a special international conference on the subject of "Emerging Media: Connection, Innovation & Transformation." The day-long event is scheduled for September 15, 2017 in Beijing, China. Its purpose is to explore vital research questions concerning the rise of the emerging media era. Papers discussing emerging media from a variety of perspectives and subjects are invited, including (but not limited to) the following topics: l Social effects of emerging media; l Social innovation and emerging media; l Social networks and emerging media; l Social transformation and emerging media; l Internet governance and emerging media; l Health communication and emerging media; l And other topics related to emerging media. In addition to being a significant intellectual event in the field of emerging media in its own right, the conference provides an opportunity to spark conversations regarding next steps in the advancing a discipline of emerging media studies. Please submit a 500-word abstract to emergingmedia2017(a)163.com before July 15, 2017. Decisions on acceptance will be communicated by July 25, 2017. Full papers (with a suggested length of 3,000 words) need to be submitted by September 5. After the conference, selected papers will be published as a book by a respected international publishing house. There is no registration charge for attendees to this day-long event.
