Thanks, Aaron. -----Original Message----- Call for Papers and Participation: HCSNet Workshop on Natural User Interfaces: Multitouch and Gestural Interactions What is the next major evolution in user interaction? HCSNet is offering a workshop that brings together people from different disciplines interested in Natural User Interfaces (NUI). This workshop will discuss the role NUI can play, themes of interest as well as future work that NUI enables. Do gestures completely replace typical mouse pointers or simply augment it for some functionality? Do all applications work with gestures or only a select few? The goal of this workshop is to make a first step in identifying challenges and characterising NUI design obstacles. Possible themes of interest include: * Multimodal interfaces * Robust spoken-language interaction * Intelligent user interfaces * Social interaction strategies * Gesture and embodied interaction * Conversational agents * Task and activity modelling * Environment-specific issues * Tangible and mobile devices We are pleased to announce a keynote presentation by Daniel Wigdor. Daniel is the User Experience Architect on the Microsoft Surface project, where he leads a team developing fundamentals of touch and gestural interaction. Before joining Microsoft, he conducted research in advanced user interfaces and devices at Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs, at the Initiative in Innovative Computing at Harvard University, and at the University of Toronto where he completed an MSc and a PhD in computer science, specializing in multi-surface direct-touch environments. Learn more about Daniel Wigdor. Our second international speaker is Jamie Zigelbaum. Jamie is now working at Oblong Industries in Los Angeles. He was a PhD student in the Tangible Media Group at the MIT Media Lab where he built and studied next generation computer interfaces. He specializes in gestural and tangible interfaces and works to create new interactions between humans and machines that enable the full use of our evolutionarily developed skills, expressive capabilities, and nuanced social behaviors. Oblong Industries is the developer of the g-speak spatial operating environment. Find out more about Oblong Industries. This workshop examines the NUI field as a base for future work within a multidisciplinary environment. The hope of this workshop is to develop a series of themes and design practices which have the potential to act as a base for future collaboration. We encourage those interested to participate in this workshop. Participants are required submit a short abstract discussing their thoughts on this field, and how it can fit within their existing work. HCSNet will fund a number of travel grants of up to $500 to help cover the costs of travel and accommodation for participants from outside the Melbourne area. In this changing milieu, organizations and individuals must continually acquire new knowledge and abilities or be left behind. Influential entities such as the United Nations strongly advocate the pursuit of lifelong learning for individuals, while leading companies, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations seek to become what scholars such as Peter Senge have called “learning organizations” that can transform themselves through the learning of their members at all levels. Training, or the structured development of skills, competencies, and up-to-date knowledge, is an increasingly important element in these pursuits. The shape of training may vary—formal or informal, face-to-face or technologically mediated, short-term or long-term—but the end purpose is always the same: to facilitate learning by individuals or groups, usually with the larger purpose of enhancing organizational quality. Training is vital to the success of globally connected organizations and individuals, but success requires the trainers’ effective bridging of linguistic, cultural, and social distances. Only teams and individuals with facility in navigating diverse languages, cultures, technologies, educational practices, and rhetorical traditions will be able to successfully provide training to global audiences. Professional communicators, whose discipline claims expertise in several areas relevant to training—including oral, written, and visual rhetoric, usability, information architecture, electronic collaboration, intercultural communication, and collaboration with translators—are well positioned to contribute to global training efforts or take on the role of trainers themselves. Yet, despite these advantages, the pool of research on training in global audiences is limited, especially within the field of professional communication. This special issue of the /Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization/ seeks to address this need by providing a space for scholarly research and best practices on the topic of global, organizational training. The issue, entitled *Navigating the Global Training Terrain: New Literacies, Competencies, and Practices *will focus on training in global contexts from the perspective of both those who train and those who learn, including current research and best practices. The special issue will also cast an eye toward organizational training as it is evolving towards the future. The editors of the special issue welcome submissions from a variety of perspectives including business, science, humanitarian practice, health, social advocacy, education, and government. Graduate programs for "internet studies"?

Hey all, I just finished an exhilarating undergraduate program that gave me enough flexibility in order to study the impact/efficacy of Twitter during the Iran Election(http://www.devingaffney.com/-iranelection-quantifying-online-activ… ), but in order to pull it off, I had to really bend some of the institutions rules, and just barely got the necessary advisorship in order to study it in a reasonable way. I am looking to jump right back into school for the following academic year, and am trying to figure out which schools have which programs - it seems that the information/ websites for all the programs that do exist are well ensconced within their respective institutions websites, which tend towards labyrinthine. Does anyone have a good list of institutions (US/ elsewhere) where a Masters/PhD in fields either directly or otherwise closely related to "internet studies" (or "web science," or whatever term you use, as this even seems to be up in the air, as far as I can tell)? Obviously, there are places like Citizenlab, Berkman, and OII, which all seem to at least offer classes in some capacity, but are there any others i just haven't found? Hi everyone, I have been following everybody's answer to Devin's question about Graduate programs for "internet studies" and I have found them very interesting from a PhD student perspective as well. So let me ask you all the following question: What would be your advice for a PhD candidate starting to look at job postings for next year? How can I find a position that fits or should I jump at any opportunity? How can I distinguish myself? What are universities looking for in general? Thank you all in advance, Christine

Hi, I want to thank everyone for their great advice and many links to job postings. Keep them coming! I should point out that even though I'm currently doing my PhD in New Zealand, I'm actually from Canada, Montreal to be exact so I guess that rules me out for those scholarships you were mentioning Mary. I'm very open about where to go at this stage and willing to look at any opportunity. Apart from job posting sites, do you have any advice about how to make one self stand out in a what I imagine will be piles of CVs to compete with? Thanks, Christine

Christine - There are a number of websites where jobs are posted. The biggest are the Chronicle of Higher Education jobs page http://chronicle.com/section/Jobs/61/ And Higher Ed Jobs http://www.higheredjobs.com/ There are a number of others, and many listservs like this one are used to post job listings as well. >From my own experience being in your shoes, schools are willing to consider someone who is ABD if they are confident of finishing the degree on time and if the candidate seems enthusiastic. I also would suspect teaching experience as a graduate student is hugely important, but my experience at Bethany is unique in that teaching is really the only thing that matters here. I do remember that being able to present teaching evaluations when I was still ABD was a big help. I would apply for any job that you feel you can do - any communication job where you feel you know the classes the department would likely as you to teach (which you can usually guess by looking at the institution's course catalog and also the published schedules if you can find them - look at what's offered regularly. Newbies often teach the lower level courses the standing faculty are tired of dealing with. ;) Jobs also come in waves. This point in the year usually the jobs are mostly tenure-track, the planned hiring for next year. In March/April will come another wave, including more visiting and instructor positions that will probably be more within your reach as ABD, where the institution needs a warm body to fill a space for the fall. Always stress your teaching in your letters, research the institution and the faculty thoroughly before you even write the letter, and be enthusiastic.
