Hi Just a very quick question: Is there a direct scholarly reply to Sherry Turkle: "How Computers change the way we think" (Chronicle of Higher Education: The Chronicle Review 2004)? I find a number of student papers online which mention the article, some blogposts, but no 1:1 reply or academic debate directly following the article. Does anyone know anything? Though my particular project has a strong intersection with internet and media studies issues, I chose to explore it via the discipline of Anthropology. While it can be difficult going at times, especially as aspects of the project don't sit comfortably within the traditionally drawn boundaries of the discipline, the advantages far outweigh the challenges. In terms of outcomes, I frankly don't expect that I'll work within an Anthropology department. But having the disciplinary training leaves that possibility open (as well as working in a number of other humanities/social sciences and digital humanities areas). The critical thing, should you choose to go down this path, is to do the due diligence. Digital Anthropology

I should also add that we are in the second year of a Digital Anthropology MSc at the Department of Anthropology at University College London. As it happens this is turning out as almost too successful since we are tying to keep the numbers below 20 and today as the first day of term it looks like we are ending up with rather more than that. There are a number of good (such as OII) and not so good specialists in Internet studies, but to be a contrarian -- and friends please forgive me -- I would suggest that you get your PhD in a longer-established discipline, such as Communications, Information, Sociology, Comp Sci, etc. -- with a concentation on the Internet as well as at least one other field within that discipline. That would improve your ability to get anchored in a discipline, received more methodological and theoretical training, and get hired afterwards and get grants to do the kind of research you'd like to. Measuring mood online

Dear all, Is anyone aware of any online survey / questionnaire projects that have used mood scales (i.e. Measures of current mood state such as the POMS, Multiple Affect Adjective Checklist and so on)? I am specifically interested in something that will allow one to measure aggressive / angry affect. I'm aware of work that's been done using measures of anxiety, depression, general positive and negative mood - but nothing specifically related to aggression. I have considered using Bond-Lader type visual analogue scales, but I'd prefer something that can be administered in a Likert-type format in an online questionnaire.
