Dear list, This might sound like an odd question... I need to be able to stream quite a huge collection of podcasts online. They are stored in a web (can be accessed through FTP too) server and classified in several folders. To make a long exposition short, I would like to either set up a sort of Spotify in my own web/FTP server or to have your usual flash player, but with the possibility to choose the files you want to play, instead of having it already preset. Or, in other words, with or without having to install locally a desktop application, I would like to be able to play the podcasts stored in my web/FTP server. Any ideas? Thanks to Brian, Gilbert, and Michael. I should clarify: the texts that i'm being asked to procure permission for are actually images. They're screenshots of the three websites' homepages used to help readers get a visual marker for the discourses examined of the article. To me, this complicates the discussion so far; in what way am i violating a website's copyright by reproducing a screen capture of their home page? i can see the problem (kinda, but not really) with reproducing huge chunks of text, or film clips, or audio performances longer than 6 seconds because i know of the deleterious effects on content industries of copyright violation </sarcasm>. i think the comments earlier about the chilling effects of copyright violation are on point. Whether in the EU, AU, or US, we (as AoIRies ('pronounced AIR-rhees')) should consider discussing this in greater detail at Gothenburg* and in this forum to come up with something similar to the ALA's guidelines on copyright and fair use, but focused on Internet/New Media Research. "If pictures of you naked end up on an internet site"....

Interesting story ran today on the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) news site about naked pictures of a Canadian Judge that appeared online, that cites the learned opinion and judgment of the whole unfortunate event passed by the Dean of Law at a major Canadian University as follows: ³"If pictures of you naked end up on an internet site, it's quite difficult to say you have the credibility to be a judge," said Sébastien Grammond, dean of civil law at the University of Ottawa. Grammond said a judge ultimately represents the ideal of justice and therefore the judge's conduct and image reflect on the justice system as a whole. The judge is, in a sense, the embodiment of the justice system, something the Supreme Court has noted in a past judgment.² So Dean Grammond explicitly (a) decouples responsibility for the act of posting an image of a naked person (of a woman) on the net with the person (her husband) posting that image while simultaneously, (b) links culpability for the simple act of representation itself as it were with the person represented in that image... For the first time in, well, ever I've been asked by a journal to obtain permission from a website to reproduce a screenshot of a webpage. Not, to be clear, of an image on the page - but of the page itself. I've been offered the option of removing the image and replacing it with a URL, but from an archival standpoint that's problematic. Webpages with dynamic content change all the time, not to mention that authors sometimes change formats/platforms, modify pages, or remove content that was included in the original analysis. I don't want to miss the publishing deadline, but I need to know: "where dey do dat at?!?" (translation: since when did fair use guidelines get bent so badly in academic publishing?) Mobile Digital Interactive Storytelling New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia Special Issue http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/titles/13614568.asp Call for Papers Until recently a location's memory could mainly be accessed through media surrogates, such as books, drawings, film or audio files, or through face-to-face encounters with people who were able to knit people into the rich but hidden experience fabric of a place. The integration of low-cost pervasive and personal technology in the form of mobile devices and augmented reality into our everyday life starts to change our expectations about how to perceive the world around us. We are now able to leave traces of our emotional or intellectual experience as virtual attachments to any location. As a result we expect that any place, indoors or outdoors, reveals itself to us by confronting us with connection, context, and uncommon perspectives. Yet, any exploration is in itself an experience and so we desire that the revelation is compelling and enjoyable on an individual and group level. We expect to experience the world around us as a continuous, flexible, and networked exchange of ideas that are routed in where and who we are and how these intrinsic facets of our experience are connected to those of others. For this special issue we solicit novel papers describing approaches in digital storytelling that address the challenges posed by real world environments experienced through mobile devices. We look for work solutions for redefining our understanding of narrative structure and theory through interactivity in computer-generated story worlds that are tightly interwoven with the places we visit, the objects we touch, and the people we meet.
