Hi all - I generally just lurk, but I was struck by a discontinuity in discussion last Thursday and think it bears on this question of becoming inured to shock. There were 6 posts on "London...the internet accounts" interspersed with 4 on "AoIR 6.0 Chicago 2005 Registration is now open", 1 each on "iCS 8.2", "Call for proposals", and "Internet and fun/joy/pleasure". In the three days since, "London" vanished, some of the other threads continued, and new ones appeared. This is no doubt the nature of most conversations on this list, and perhaps everything that could be said about shock and bearing up and giving sympathy was expressed in the comments that were posted, and/or continuation has moved to other venues. But I had some cognitive dissonance reading the disparate threads as business-as-usual went on for many (including me) while others were wondering just how "usual" their lives were going to continue to be. I'm not familiar with any of the literature on shock, but some levels or layers of protection are evident in the acts of just getting on with things, whatever those immediate things that consume us may be. At the same time, I'm aware it would also be counterproductive (at least to purposes of peace and justice) to mine the event for all its tragedy, as this would play into political efforts to cast the attack in symbolic terms that fuel nationalisms and other hatreds. In response to Greg Elmer's Q to the list: Yes, people with larger networks do use the internet more. We have only cross-sectional data. DOCAM 06 is the fourth Annual meeting of the Document Academy, an international network of scholars, artists and professionals in various fields interested in the exploration of the document as a useful approach, concept and tool in Sciences, Arts, Business, and Society. Hello All I think there are too many different arguments mixed all together, in a rather inadequate way. I strongly dislike the OLPC project, mostly for the reasons explained at http://macareo.pucp.edu.pe/evillan/shdf.htm, but I do believe that my arguments, as well as many of the arguments proposed in this discussion, are valid for a specific subset of "developing" countries, and even inside those developing countries, some regions or groups are to be considered under a different perspective. Inequality is wrong, I concur; at the same, unless capitalism is completely replaced by something else, it is an inevitable consequence of an specific economic structure. Programmes like OLPC try to soften or lower inequality, but besides their shortcomings, they cannot even attempt to make inequality disappear. The fact that these computers are "down-market" is not a problem per se. If (a big if) a proper usage is found, they can be adequate, since they are not trying to replace a full-blown PC connected to high bandwidth networks and used for downloading videos from a Torrent. It is. again, a question of purpose, not of specific technology. I'm against the purpose and the specific implementation of such purpose. This is a necessary debate, since it is most possible that governments of developing countries are going to get scammed into buying thousands of these machines without a critical assessment of what exactly to do with them and what exactly should be the outcome of their usage in educational settings. (All of which was stated in my original post about it.) Why am I saddened: 1. Not every piece of research has to be about online relationships. This one asked who people discuss important matters with -- no more and no less. It didn't specify whether it is online or offline. 2. Asking that question is legitimate. It is not a pro-nuclear family agenda. And as my note said, it is from the gold-standard US General Social Survey, which is vetted by serious scholars, and exactly replicates a 1985 survey question. In addition, as 2 minutes with scholar.google would have shown, these are serious, respected scholars with a long track record. 3. Now, as I have said before, I have problems with the social isolation spin that the news media put on the article, but trashing it without reading it is silly -- especially on a list dedicated to Research -- that's the "R" in AOIR -- and long may it stay there and not become the AOIB.
