Social classification (SC) is a convenient, generic label that may be used to refer to any of a number of broadly related processes by which the resources in a collection are categorized by multiple people over an ongoing period, with the potential result that any given resource will come to be represented by a set of labels or descriptors that have been generated by different people. The specific processes in question include indexing, tagging, bookmarking, annotation, and description of kinds that may be characterized as collaborative, cooperative, distributed, dynamic, community-based, folksonomic, wikified, democratic, user-assigned, or user-generated. The mid-2000s have seen rapid growth in levels of interest in these kinds of technique for generating descriptions of resources for the purposes of discovery, access, and retrieval. Systems that provide automated support for social classification may be implemented at low cost, and are perceived to contribute to the democratization of classification by empowering people, who might otherwise remain strictly consumers of information, to become information producers. Efforts to conduct serious evaluations of the comparative effectiveness of such systems have begun, but results are scattered and piecemeal. Compared with retrieval systems based on traditional methods -- manual or automatic -- of classifying resources, how effectively are users of SC-based systems able to find the resources that they want? What is the impact on retrieval effectiveness of systems designers' decisions to pay limited attention to traditionally important components such as vocabulary control, facet analysis, and systematic hierarchical arrangement? Current implementations of SC tend to shy away, for instance, from imposing the kind of vocabulary control on which classification schemes and thesauri are conventionally founded: proponents argue that social classifiers should be free, as far as possible, to supply precisely those class labels that they believe will be useful to searchers in the future, whether or not those labels have proven useful in the past. But do the advantages that are potentially to be gained from allowing classifiers free rein in the choice of labels outweigh those that may be obtainable by imposing some form of vocabulary and authority control, by offering browsing-based interfaces to hierarchically structured vocabularies, by establishing and complying with policies for the specificity and exhaustivity of sets of labels, and/or by other devices that are designed to improve classifier-- searcher consistency? Other questions arise as a result of the reliance of SC-based systems on volunteer labor. Given the distributed nature of SC, for example, how can it be ensured that every resource attracts a critical mass of descriptors, rather than just the potentially-quirky choices of a small number of volunteers? Given the self-selection of classifiers, how can it be ensured that they are motivated to supply class labels that they would expect other searchers to use? In general, are reductions in the costs of classification (borne by information producers) achieved only at the expense of increases in the costs of resource discovery (borne by consumers)? ENHANCING SOCIAL PARTICIPATION FOR THE NEW MOBILE COMMUNITIES ACROSS PERVASIVE INTERACTIVE MULTIMEDIA SYSTEMS: M-ITV & PRODUCTION OF SELF-AUTHORED CONTENT a Special Session at the Euro mGov 2006, 30-31 August & 1 September 2006, Sussex University, Brighton, UK http://www.icmg.mgovernment.org Session Chair: Dr. Anxo Cereijo Roibás School of Computing, Mathematical and Information Sciences, University of Brighton CONTENT m-TV will go beyond the mere broadcast of TV or download of music, video clips. It will need to pay special attention to the contextual usage of this media and solve new issues for handhelds such as the low usability, sociability, creativity, contextual sensitivity and interaction that so far they enable. According to socio-cultural and technological trends in this area, it is possible to prospect a use of mobile interactive multimedia systems in future communication scenarios where the user can create and share self-authored & contextual digital content, giving a new dimension to the TV experience and extending and enhancing it outside the home boundaries and, at the same time, opening opportunities in new subjects such as m-Gov by encouraging social participation and democracy. The aim of this special session is to give a glance to the future of m-Gov and pervasive-Gov and stimulate discussion around prospected scenarios of pervasive interactive multimedia in which nomadic users can create, edit and share self-authored content with their mobile phones facilitating in this way government and social activities and, at the same time, enhancing democracy. Such systems can to improve users access to social services, to facilitate government activities as well as access to context-based infotainment and to encourage social participation. Two users groups will particularly benefit from these systems that enable social participation: the youth will have access to appealing and user friendly applications. Moreover, accessible GOV systems across handhelds and new ambient interfaces can contribute to reduce the digital divide in a dramatically growing ageing society. Moreover, new challenges for pervasive communications systems (interoperability between handhelds, i-TV, PCs, in-car-navigators, smart office and the smarthouse), tangible computing and intelligent environments are currently will definitely affect the user experience in mobile and pervasive Gov-systems. The session will create a provocative framework for future interactive mobile and pervasive Government applications and will generate a debate with the audience around the emerging and contentious topic of using mobile devices as main interfaces in a pervasive-Government experience. It is expected that the presenters will promote inter-disciplinary and multidisciplinary discussion about a range of HCI issues including: enabling mobile users to create and share self authored multimedia content, using handhelds to share moods, information and co-creating, management of multiple user interactions, interaction between mobile phones and other devices, the development of usable design models for interactive Government services in convergent media, special HCI considerations around media sharing, new applications and new forms of interactive content more suitable in pervasive-Gov contexts. Other ethical, legal, business and social implications of ubiquitous communications may also be raised. The session will conclude with a summarization of the most relevant outcomes of the discussion. Dear AoIR members Regarding the Korean students, I feel sorry that you started to recognize them as spammers. As a matter of fact, I asked them to post in order to gain some experience about an internationally-running scholarly mailing list on the Internet. Although I have taught them the way in which email should be written when sending to the mailing list, I have also noticed that they did not communicate with you properly. Since students do not have a high level of language skills in English, they hardly shared their ideas, information, and/or thoughts with international audience. But please understand that they are undergraduate kids and this is a valuable learning process. Further, I think that they will be a good component of online AoIR community in the future. Arguably, native English speakers tend to dominate the majority of conversations being made on the list. Asian people who are mostly lurking have also a right to speak out their words. Once students are afraid of dropping email just because their English is not good enough, they might never express themselves. Lastly, spring semester in Korea is approaching to the end and my students will thank all of you for helping finish their assignments. However, it should be noted that my sincere apology goes to those who had wasted their time in reading some awkward emails of my students. Best wishes, Han..

I am sure that the students concerned are learning a LOT about the uses of the Internet :). Interesting how discussions ABOUT spam can be as substantial as the spam itself ;). Speaking of pedagogy, we are thinking a lot here at Curtin in Internet Studies about how much students do or don't need to engage with things like lists and how to get them to understand and appreciate the relationship between older forms of the internet (usenet, IRC, lists) and some of the things they now do without thinking they are special. Students or spammers -- the background

I have been dealing with this group of students in Korea -- as they identify themselves when sent the form email message asking them to explain who they are and why they want to join air-l -- on the subscription approval front for months. My sense with many of them a few months ago was that they were in a class (one that met on Tuesday, because that's when the requests for approval would show up in my mailbox) for which they are supposed to subscribe to the list, and then post to the list. My impression may, of course, have been quite wrong. As a reminder, let me just add that anyone who wants to subscribe to air-l is sent a message to which they must respond before they are added. The idea is mainly to establish that these are real people who want to subscribe, not the results of mass-subscribing bots. The individuals in question all responded, and said variously that they were students in Korea, in many cases identifying the university, some saying that they were Chinese students studying in Korea, and that they wanted to join the list to learn more about the internet, or that they were in a class about the internet and wanted to join the list. There are a few different ways in which this recent problem can be handled, and we on the exec should be able to come up with a fairly satisfactory solution very soon. It's probably spam....

With respect to these folks if they are legitimate academics, my sense is this likely is spam to AOIR-L....and all of us who respond or discuss probably will have our e-mail addresses captured for any number of nefarious purposes. :( Time to tune up my procmail and Spam Assassin rules, I guess. To wit: 1. There's been a sudden spike in SK-based message traffic recently. 2. Most of the content is commercial-related solicitations. 3. These messages all tease for folks to respond but don't provide adequate information to build even the most basic sense of trust or believability IMO....a few of these notes say the writer is a university student, but fails to say what University -- I have yet to encounter ANY student who wouldn't post their affiliation when asking for information in a public forum, particularly one that's full of academics! 4. While I've not done a detailed analysis of the message headers (no time!) I bet there's a ton of indicators that these are spam ---various different relay servers, etc. If this is legitimate content, my sincere apologies for appearing to marginalize you and your messages.
