I’m looking for GitHub repositories that are used for things other than software, especially where users are actively collaborating rather than just putting together static collections. So far, we have found a few books being written, some musical transcriptions being error-checked, and some policy documents maintained online. Does anyone know of any examples of these or other categories? Any pointers much appreciated. Happy to share what we find with anyone interested. Participations: Journal of Audience and Reception Studies has just released its latest issue! This open-access journal features three special sections. The first is aimed at understanding readers, reading, and digital media, the second looks at interviews as a research method, and the third section features nine essays from the University of Wales at Aberystwyth conference on "Researching past cinema audiences: Archives, Memories and Methods". Special Issue of Culture Machine Machine Intelligences in Context: Beyond the Technological Sublime Edited by Peter Jakobsson, Anne Kaun & Fredrik Stiernstedt We are seeking contributions for a special issue of Culture Machine<https://culturemachine.net/about/> – an international open-access journal of culture and theory – exploring Machine Intelligences in Context. Culture Machine is a series of experiments in culture and theory. Its aim is to seek out and promote scholarly work that engages provocatively with contemporary technical objects, processes and imaginaries from the North and South. Building on its open ended, non-instrumental, and exploratory approach to critical theory, Culture Machine calls for creative scholarship and research that contests globalizing technical narratives and their environmental logics of extraction. This special issue is a long overdue confrontation with the hype surrounding artificial intelligence. The supposed blessings that AI will bestow upon datafied societies, as well as the associated dangers, are now well-known both to the academic specialist and to the general public. Representatives from the tech sector and the world of politics claim that the fourth industrial revolution will be powered by AI and that AI will eventually become ubiquitous within politics, industry, culture and in everyday life. The impulse behind this special issue is to interrogate these prophesies a bit closer and to get a look behind the shiny surfaces of these new, often unseen technologies. Because it does seem that what AI actually promises, and most of all, what it actually delivers, is neither found in the realm of the fantastic nor the uncanny, and a lot of it is not even particularly new, intelligent or artificial. The task of this special issue is thus to provide a counter-narrative to the dominant accounts of AI. It is not a matter of debunking AI, of unmasking the ideological interests behind it or revealing its dirty algorithmic secrets, but of putting AI in its critical contexts beyond the technological sublime – ie. the myths surrounding current technological developments that are meant to inspire both awe and fantasies of control and mastery. By combining phenomena that do not normally go together, such as AI and intersectionality, this special issue seeks to un-familiarize the familiar and to make unexpected connections, while also exploring potential critical and more just futures. One question that seems particularly pertinent to ask is of the relations, substitutions and combinations of different forms of intelligence, both human and more than human, and to explore how these come together in different contexts. Contributions that employ critical perspectives from either the social sciences or the humanities are welcome, but we also invite and encourage experimental and transdisciplinary approaches, including contributions from the information sciences, software studies, and articles focused on case studies of AI with stakes for Latin America, Asia, and Africa. It is time to move past an understanding of AI that borders towards viewing it as a technological sublime. In order to do so we should analyse it as a broad phenomenon that questions the integration of machinic forms of intelligence in lived settings, particularly across the relations it is generating in the Global South. Media Industries 2020 (MI2020) maintains an open intellectual agenda, inviting papers, panels or workshops exploring the full breadth of media industries, in contemporary and historical contexts, and from all traditions of media industries scholarship. MI2020 will therefore provide a meeting ground for all forms of media industries research. We invite case studies of how mutual hostilities between actors are pursued through technological change, whereby each actor seeks to gain an edge against their adversary. Three empirical fields that exemplify this dynamic are the surge of legal highs, information security and crypto-currencies. More examples of the same thing can be found in other fields of empirical investigation and suit this panel. What we will examine under the label of "outlaw innovation" is how conflict breeds innovation. Related to this is an awareness of the tenuous relation between legislation and innovation. The "outlaw" is just another word for an innovator. Concurrently, however, capitalism strives relentlessly to subsume and integrate its own outside, turning this unknown into innovation and new markets. >From this observation follows that the purported outsider position ascribed to various grassroots innovators, users, etc., must be scrutinized. States, capital and academic actors work in conjunction with these outlawed/independent researchers to produce a shared language of common concerns around risks and opportunities inherent in technological innovation, such as in the Tor project. The legal grey zone thus emerges as an incubator of innovation for legal businesses. *Apologies for cross-posting* Recounting Algorithms: A Workshop on Critical Algorithm Studies in the Library University of Toronto Mississauga Library May 7-8, 2020 https://www.recounting.net/ Call for Proposals How can libraries and archives best contribute to emerging critical discourses around algorithms, machine learning, and artificial intelligence? Recounting Algorithms is a two-day workshop, supported by the Council on Library and Information Resources and hosted by the University of Toronto Mississauga Library, that aims to enrich the intersections of critical algorithm studies and academic librarianship. Efforts to historicize, culturally situate, and foreground algorithmic systems as manifestations of bias and power have flourished recently. Work in this area has contributed important insights into the often oppressive operational conditions of systems used to automate tasks such as hiring, criminal risk assessment, supply chain management, web page ranking, and surveillance. The robustness of this growing field of inquiry is demonstrated in the varied institutional backgrounds of those who have contributed to it—they include journalists, artists, advocates, and academic researchers from across the disciplinary spectrum. Librarians and archivists are beginning to incorporate aspects of this critical discourse through projects that advance algorithmic literacy and initiatives, like Information Maintainers, that emphasize the intersection of information technology, data governance, and social justice. Relatedly, initiatives such as Emulation as a Service and Collections as Data suggest new services and infrastructures that might facilitate analysis of algorithmic systems. We invite proposals for pedagogical resources, creative projects, and library services that explore how libraries can support and build on investigations of algorithmic systems (including, machine learning and AI) and their enabling social conditions. While proposals should be oriented toward the library as a context for sustaining and supporting instruction and critical inquiry, we encourage submissions from non-librarians, particularly from educators, researchers, graduate students, artists, journalists and advocates. Potential themes include but are not limited to: * Projects to collect, preserve, and curate materials relevant to the study of algorithmic systems. * Resources for addressing emerging aspects of information and digital literacy related to machine learning and artificial intelligence. * Projects that reframe core values and practices (such as access and literacy) in light of work from critical algorithm studies. Invited workshop participants will present their proposals (in draft or prototype form) and engage in workshop activities to refine and develop them using constructive input from the group. Increasingly digital exclusion also emerges with the active agency of state and corporate institutions using AI, smart city infrastructures, surveillance systems and even robotics. The aim of this post-conference is to make connections between a diverse range of disciplinary areas that have studied digital inequalities including digital inclusion research, data justice, critical race and digital media studies, data sovereignty and digital rights. Inequalities occur along multiple fronts including geography, social class, race, gender, age, and institutional systems and policies. They also can be shaped by powerful imaginaries of digitally-enabled futures promising efficiency, safety and economic prosperity. Data-driven and algorithmic processes related to smart technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), facial-recognition and robotics demand an extension from traditional concerns around digital exclusion to account for the potential to produce systemic abuses and extenuate disadvantage. The post-conference is an opportunity to examine the ways in which new technologies, including those that link digital networks and data via tracking tools and algorithms, add to the unequal distribution of digital benefits and perpetuate and even worsen inequalities in the expansion of the Digital Welfare State and other kinds of neoliberal, policing and techno-centric systems. It also examines the kinds of civic, open and public institutions – such as libraries, local governments, community media, and justice movements – that are increasingly important for ameliorating digital inequalities and countering imaginaries premised upon techno-centric fixes. Co-organised by the University of Sydney, University of Canberra, the University of Texas at Austin, Western Sydney University and the University of Melbourne, this Digital Inequalities Post-ICA Conference recontextualises digital inequalities within the context of emerging technologies and their affiliated social and political regimes, spaces and imaginaries. We seek to bring together researchers from multiple disciplinary perspectives to discuss the impact of digital inequalities in multiple sites.
