========================================================================================================== REFRESH 2020 1st International Workshop on Real-life modeling in 5G networks and beyond - co-located with IEEE DCOSS 2020 ========================================================================================================== Scope and Overview: The economic and societal potential of emerging 5G and cyber-physical social systems is vastly greater than what has been realized so far, and major investments are being made worldwide to develop the corresponding science and technology. The Future Internet paradigm, the proliferation of emerging networks and architectures, wireless access technologies and multi-homing smart devices are evolving towards a competitive environment, where users and devices have access to various resources, while their behaviors become strongly interdependent. This fact demands and motivates the development of user-centric resource management and optimization frameworks, which enable user's self-optimization and autonomy. This vision is further motivated and supported by the convergence of various emerging technologies enabling Cyber-Physical Systems operation, including 5G/B5G technologies, Internet of Things (IoT), Mobile Edge Computing and Software Defined Networking, all targeting flexibility and efficiency. To deal with the involved complexity, and driven by the requirements of autonomy and scalability, distributed resource orchestration approaches appear as a necessity rather than a desire. The REFRESH Workshop aims at to stimulate research on the most novel topics of real-life modeling in 5G networks and beyond. This year's edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work (including studies of real deployment), with a primary interest in new directions of wireless networking in concrete application scenarios and demonstrators in areas such as, but not limited to: mobile edge computing, Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, public safety networks, dynamic spectrum utilization, smart grid communications, wireless power communication, green wireless networks, information-centric wireless networks. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research and development approaches and results, as well as work-in-progress papers. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative solutions or applications for 5G networks and beyond. All papers shall be forward-looking, describe their relationship to existing work, and shall argue their impact and implications for ongoing or future research. Call for Abstracts: Workshop “Social Robotics and the Good Life – The Normative Side of Forming Emotional Bonds with Robots” Organizers: International Center for Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities, University of Tübingen (Regina Ammicht Quinn and Wulf Loh, both Tübingen, in cooperation with Janina Loh, Vienna, and Charles Ess, Oslo) Date: May 7-8, 2020 Venue:IZEW Tübingen, Germany Social robotics has the strong potential of becoming more and more prevalent in the coming years, especially in the realms of elder day care, child rearing, and education. As human beings have the fascinating ability to emotionally bond not exclusively with other human beings, but also with animals, plants, and objects, it is highly likely that human-machine-relationships will arise from these human-robotic-interactions. While children and the elderly constitute vulnerable groups that merit special consideration, at the heart of the issue lie fundamental ethical questions that concern human-robot-interactions /per se/. Do human-robot-relationships necessarily constitute a form of manipulation, since any form of reciprocity on the side of the robot is merely simulated? Are these relationships then /per se/ detrimental to the good life, as they replace “real” relationships? What constitutes such a “real” relationship? Are more intimate relationships with robots, such as friendship or even love, possible and ethically sound? Which design cues does an ethical design of robots have to take into account? And: how do we conceive and ground “good lives” as more and more of the virtues and interactions – starting with those of friendship – of good lives will be increasingly interwoven with social robots? For discussing these and further questions regarding the normativity of emotional bonds with robots, in this interdisciplinary workshop we invite submissions with a focus on (but not restricted to) topics such as ofriendship olove osex ocare otrust oobjectophilia or object sexuality ofeminist perspectives on relationships ofamily, children, and nurture odisappointment, anger, and hate omorally appropriate behavior with regard to robots. The workshop will take place on the 7^th and 8^th of May 2020 at the International Centre for Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities (IZEW) at the University of Tübingen. *Prof. Dr. Charles Ess*, Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo, will be a fellow at the Center of Ethics at that time. He will give a keynote lecture and will be our dialogue partner throughout the workshop. Understanding Digital Culture: Humanist Lenses for Internet Research, an NEH-funded Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities to be held June 1-5, 2020 at the University of Central Florida, seeks applications. Understanding Digital Culture aims to increase the number of humanities scholars using digital tools for data collection and analysis in internet research. Drawing on the expertise of an interdisciplinary community of humanities scholars spanning digital humanities, information studies, American studies, fan studies, cultural studies, media studies, and games studies, Understanding Digital Culture will enable sharing ideas and methods for using digital technologies to advance humanities research and teaching. Specifically, we will provide resources, training, and a community of collaborators to engage both computational network and data analysis tools and the ethics and best practices of using the web as a site of research. No previous experience in digital humanities is required to apply, and the workshop sessions are structured to assume no prior knowledge of either the technology or theory in order to allow for the broadest range of participation. Graduate students and early career scholars are especially encouraged to apply, as are faculty and staff at institutions such as HBCUs,Tribal Colleges, and community colleges. The study of the night has expanded in tandem with new attention to the night on the part of city administrations, organizers of cultural events (like *nuits** blanches* and museum nights) and activists fighting gentrification, systems of control and practices of harassment and exclusion which limit the “right to the night” of various populations. In this context of this new attention to the night, we invite proposals for an international conference, in English and French, on relationships between media and the night. We are open to papers focussing on old and new media, from any disciplinary perspective, and dealing with any historical period or geographical area. Possible topics may include (but are not limited to) the following: - The place of media consumption and circulation within the 24-hour cycle; - Formal and stylistic features of media treatments of the night; - Media constructions of the transgressive, marginal or identitarian night; - Specialized media directed at (or produced by) communities of the night; - The role of media forms (or platforms) in tracing itineraries of night-time activity; - Media tools to enhance the safety and accessibility of the night; - “Intermedial” dimensions of media’s relationship to the night (e.g., electric lighting and photography; late-night television and classic cinema, etc.); - The challenge of imagining “night” genres for 24-hour streaming services; - Archiving the night; - Pre-digital or digital practices of mapping the night; - Night, social media and data visualization; - Games, apps and night modes; - Night media and energy infrastructures. Des historien.nes, des archéologues, des géographes, des urbanistes, des économistes et des spécialistes de la culture et de la littérature ont analysé les activités et les imaginaires nocturnes de grandes et de petites communautés, à travers un large éventail de périodes historiques. Parallèlement au développement de ces études, la nuit fit l’objet d’une nouvelle attention de la part des administrations municipales, des organisateurs d’événements culturels (auxquels on doit par exemple les nuits blanches et les soirées des musées), ainsi que de la part d’activistes luttant contre la gentrification et les dispositifs de contrôle des activités nocturnes, ou encore dénonçant les pratiques de harcèlement et d’exclusion qui limitent le « droit à la nuit » de divers groupes minoritaires. C’est dans le contexte de cette nouvelle attention portée à la nuit que nous lançons un appel à communications pour un colloque international en français et anglais sur les relations entre les médias et la nuit. Nous sommes ouverts aux propositions portant sur les anciens comme sur les nouveaux médias, à toutes les perspectives disciplinaires, ainsi qu’à toutes les périodes historiques ou zones géographiques. Voici la liste indicative non restrictive des thèmes suggérés : - La consommation et la diffusion des médias dans le cycle de 24 heures ; - Les caractéristiques formelles et stylistiques des différents traitements médiatiques de la nuit ; - Les constructions médiatiques des transgressions, des marginalités ou des identités nocturnes ; - Les médias spécialisés destinés aux communautés de la nuit, ou produits par elles ; - Le rôle des types de médias (ou des plateformes) dans la traçabilité des itinéraires de l’activité nocturne ; - Les outils médiatiques œuvrant à l’amélioration de la sécurité et de l'accessibilité de la nuit ; - Les aspects intermédiaux de la relation média/nuit (par exemple, le lien entre l’éclairage électrique et la photographie, les programmes télévisuels de fin de soirée et le cinéma classique, etc.) ; - Les défis de la programmation « nocturne » pour les services de streaming 24 h/24 ; - Archiver la nuit ; - Les pratiques pré-numériques ou numériques de cartographie de la nuit ; - La nuit, les médias sociaux et la visualisation des données ; - Les jeux vidéo, les applications et les modes nuits ("night modes") ; - Les médias nocturnes et les infrastructures énergétiques.
