Call for papers (abstracts due 7 February 2020) ‘Living with Digital Platforms in Asia-Pacific: Everyday Life, Participation, Policy, and Rights’ Special issue of Asian Journal of Communication Edited by Gerard Goggin (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) Titik Rahayu (Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, Indonesia) Internationally, the rise of digital platforms is a highly visible phenomenon in contemporary media and communications and social life. This special issue puts the spotlight on the prefiguring, incubation, and emergence of, and contests over, digital platforms in the Asia Pacific region. It aims to bring together research, perspectives, proposals, provocations, and debate on questions such as: * What are the business models, economics, and service offerings of digital platforms in the Asia-Pacific region? * What are the socio-political and economic challenges for startups in developing countries to develop new digital platforms and compete with established multinational corporations? * How do digital platforms circulate and operate across and within the Asia and Pacific regions? What are the connections between digital platforms in Asia and other regions, as well as global digital platforms? * How do digital platforms figure in everyday life in Asian and Pacific settings, and what are their socio-cultural dynamics and implications? * What are the social imaginaries of Asian and Pacific digital platforms? * What theories and concepts are elicited by, and are suitable for, researching Asian and Pacific digital platforms? * What is the state of play for digital platforms in relation to social, political, cultural, and other forms of participation? * What are the policy issues being raised by digital platforms in Asian and Pacific contexts, and how are policymakers and regulators responding? * Where do digital platforms fit into questions of inequality and social justice? What of the implications of digital platforms for communication and expression rights, as well as other human, social, and cultural rights? * What are the alternatives to digital platforms being generated or debated in Asian and Pacific societies? We welcome papers on these and other relevant aspects of digital platforms in Asia and Pacific. We are especially interested in research that addresses neglected or new case studies and dimensions of Asian digital platforms. Also we encourage papers that reflect upon and comment upon the research, practice, policy, and other agenda on digital platforms in Asia-Pacific contexts. The successful candidates will be affiliated with the Centre for Digital Governance at the Hertie School. The Centre's research focuses on two core areas: (1) public policy and governance, with issues such as government-business relations, regulation and ethical implications of digitalisation, as well as (2) public management and administration, with a focus on transforming government (policy, service delivery) through digitalisation. Situated in the heart of Berlin, the Hertie School prepares doctoral candidates for academic careers in leading universities or as highly-skilled professionals in government, business and civil society. Our doctoral education provides rigorous academic training. The Centre for Digital Governance offers its PhD researchers a unique opportunity to become part of a vibrant, interdisciplinary, and diverse academic community. Within the framework of a Digital Governance Research Colloquium, hosted in cooperation with the School's Data Science Lab, the Centre brings together scholars and practitioners to present their research on digital governance, digital government and AI. In addition, the Centre is part of international research projects (e.g. TROPICO and Authoritarianism 2.0) and organises public events on a variety of topics with high-level partner institutions from business, civil society as well as government. PhD researchers will thus have the opportunity to work closely and exchange ideas with (senior) scholars from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds. (2020) will investigate conceptualizations and implementations of information via material, representational, and hybrid frames. The conference-experience will consider information and its transformational effects and affects—from documents to data; from facts and fictions to pattern recognition; from physical information to differential equations; and from volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity to collective intelligence and wisdom. The tenth annual What is…? examines tapestries, temperaments, and topologies of information lenses and practices—including—social and technical, mathematical and semantic, physical and biological, economic and political, cultural and environmental information. Information can thus be understood as physical, for instruction, and about epistemic systems. Scholars, government and community officials, industry professionals, scientists, artists, students, filmmakers, grassroots community organizations, and the public are invited to collaborate. The analysis of such mediated debates has a strong tradition, which started in communication science and has since then been applied across a wide range of academic disciplines. So-called ‘content analysis’ provides a means to study (mass) media content in many media shapes and formats to retrieve signs of the zeitgeist, such as cultural phenomena, representation of certain groups, and the resonance of political viewpoints. In the era of big data and digital culture, in which websites and social media platforms produce massive amounts of content and network this through hyperlinks and social media buttons, content analysis needs to become adaptive to the many ways in which digital platforms and engines handle content. This book introduces Networked Content Analysis as a digital research approach, which offers ways forward for students and researchers who want to work with digital methods and tools to study online content. Besides providing a thorough theoretical framework, the book demonstrates new tools and methods for research through case studies that study the climate change debate with search engines, Twitter, and the encyclopedia project of Wikipedia.
