[AoIR 2026] Final Reminder: Conference hotel block closes September 30
by Association Coordinator 30 Sep '26

30 Sep '26

Attention all AoIR 2026 attendees, The hotel block for AoIR 2026 at the Hyatt Regency Mexico City closes on September 30. After that date, the conference rate will no longer be available. All conference sessions take place in the hotel, so staying there means no commute to talks, events, networking, and more. The group rate is also likely one of the cheaper ways to join us for the whole week. You can book through the group reservation link: https://www.hyatt.com/en-US/group-booking/MEXHR/G-RR60 The conference runs 14–17 October, but the block also covers a night on either side, so you can book accommodation anywhere from 13 to 19 October. The hotel was recently renovated. It has accessible rooms, air conditioning, a gym, an indoor pool, and onsite dining, and some rooms look out over Chapultepec Park. It's in Polanco, a walkable neighborhood with direct transit connections to the rest of the city. The National Museum of Anthropology is nearby, as are the Soumaya and Jumex museums. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out. See you in Mexico City! Best, Emerson (she/her) AoIR Communications and Membership Coordinator ac(a)aoir.org<mailto:ac@aoir.org> Looking for Michelle? After nine years, Michelle has officially stepped down from her position at AOIR. I'm Emerson, and I'll be stepping in to continue her work. As I'm sure anyone familiar with Michelle knows, I have big shoes to fill, and I appreciate your patience as I get up to speed!

CFP for AAG 2027: Out of neoliberal debris: Data centers and promises of prosperity at the end of globalization
by Anoolia Gakhokidze 30 Sep '26

30 Sep '26

Dear colleagues, I am advertising a CFP for American Association of Geographers (AAG) taking place in NY in February 2027. Out of neoliberal debris: Data centers and promises of prosperity at the end of globalization Communities globally have been hollowed out and left as neoliberal “debris,” to borrow a term from Ann Laura Stoler (2013) <https://www.zotero.org/google-docs/?h5dHnz>, in the name of establishing faster circuits for the circulation of commodities, data, and finance capital (Khalili 2020; Mezzadra and Neilson 2019) <https://www.zotero.org/google-docs/?1ZP9GT>. In response, data center developers have promised communities unionized construction and trade jobs, high-wage IT employment, infrastructure developments, specialized training, and donations to local schools and hospitals in attempts to quell opposition (Edwards et al. 2024) <https://www.zotero.org/google-docs/?IHAZ82>. Given data center development is also notoriously tax-exempt (thirty-six states have passed tax exemptions for data center developers), we see data centers attempt, in effect, to replace public services with private capacity for communities (Flood 2026) <https://www.zotero.org/google-docs/?vf8Thp> through imposing themselves upon places left impoverished by deindustrialization (Vonderau 2017; Johnson 2019; Burrell 2020) <https://www.zotero.org/google-docs/?Kfjlvp>. The reactionary right has similarly proclaimed data center development to be part of a broader “reindustrialization” of America that would restore American supremacy, deployed alongside broad “retaliatory” tariffs and new forms of nativist and fascist violence (Davis 2017; Zhang 2025) <https://www.zotero.org/google-docs/?lbQqqS>. The Trump administration has accordingly declared data center development to be integral for national security, positioning AI-driven reindustrialization as an existential struggle against China (Kollar and Stokols 2026) <https://www.zotero.org/google-docs/?KJR92b>. In this sense, struggles over data centers are aligned with governance struggles over other infrastructures of this supposed new age, including warehouse purchases made by ICE and Flock’s ALPR surveillance network (Chua 2026) <https://www.zotero.org/google-docs/?v1ax1V>. They emerge as outrage over fascist visions of economic development, and they position themselves as struggles over and against the state, whether centered on zoning frameworks, local and state development incentives, or federal postures. These struggles’ targeting of the state is fitting given that the grand promises described above are only possible because of the retreat of the state’s provisioning of resources, in a tumultuous dynamic of class struggle Joshua Clover terms ‘riot prime’ (2016) <https://www.zotero.org/google-docs/?jxfdfJ>. Thus, much is to be gained by investigating the exact details of what these firms promise and deliver (successfully and unsuccessfully, in part or whole) and, where applicable, how such schemes are contested and even used as a chance to instead advocate for collectively-decided community needs and infrastructure. Analytical attention around the realization of such promises can propel us towards productively escalating the tensions within the working class’ approach and dispositions towards data centers. We seek empirically-grounded accounts investigating the myriad of ways data center firms and adjacent organizations advertise themselves providing essential services and needs (otherwise expected from the state), how their promises manifest, how their entrenchment in state (local, national) governance is contested and resisted in spite of such dazzling, (however incommensurate), developmentalist promises. Our interest in such phenomena is formally guided by a subset of mechanisms Brenner and Theodore (2002) <https://www.zotero.org/google-docs/?WniWra> outline of “actually existing neoliberalism”, emphasizing not only an understanding of neoliberal ideals but how capital struggles incompletely to seize existing infrastructures, laws, cultures, capital formations, and class positions. Overall, submissions are welcome around the tactics of data center developers, including: - How the tech industry structures the privatization of essential services, which may include education, childcare, pedagogic institutions, water and energy provisions - Comparative approaches linking data center firms’ community playbooks with past corporate practices of technology firms, revealing historical continuities and disjunctures - Analyses of class politics given data centers’ thirst for construction and trade labor amidst industry’s displacement of labor as a whole We also invite investigations of the varied forms of resistance against this landscape, including: - Case studies showing how the initial acceptance of a data center by certain groups in exchange for educational or employment benefits has instead changed and morphed into initiatives for community-led local development - Case studies of how data center development proposals have served as activation points for the community to advocate and rally for a different set of developments and opportunities - Efforts to build solidarity and more capacious political horizons within data center struggles, including through repositioning data center fights as a site within struggles against carceral infrastructures We ask for abstracts, with a maximum of 250 words, to be sent to Anoolia Gakhokidze <annygakh(a)uw.edu> and Nathan Kim <ncyk(a)umich.edu> by October 10. Participants will be notified of decisions by October 12, ahead of the conference deadline of October 15. Morgan Centre Conference 21-22 June 2027: ‘Living Stories’. Call for abstracts, Manchester UK
by Liang Ge 30 Sep '26

30 Sep '26

Dear all, We are hugely excited to let you know that our next Morgan Centre conference will take place at the University of Manchester, UK, 21-22 June 2027. We are delighted to share our call for abstracts with you. The theme of the conference is ‘Living Stories’. With this conference, we want to create space to discuss, and build scholarship around, the intimate entanglement between stories and life. Broadly conceived, we want to consider how stories are not only narratives we tell, but part and parcel of processes of living. Hence, this conference engages with stories as something people live and how stories themselves may be considered to be living as well. We use stories and story-telling to make sense of our lives and relationships, but they also, in turn, create the conditions, the relationships and the milieu in which we navigate life and lived experiences. Over time, stories may create the conditions of the characters that we share our lives with, the moralities that we live by, our ways of seeing the world and our lives within it, that shape who we are, how we live and what we become. Simultaneously, we may be required to create narratives out of lives and experiences according to pre-set and not necessarily well-fitting social rules, ideas and expectations. Stories might be shared widely, be contested, be political. They may only exist as fragments, be unspoken, or operate only on a level of what can be sensed or implicitly understood. Thinking about stories in this way means we are also thinking about what counts as a story and how stories may or may not need telling to be felt and experienced. We are interested in the myriad and varied ways in which we live, not just tell, stories in their many varied forms. We also seek to understand how stories may, in themselves, be understood to be ‘living’ things that may change over time. They may come to take on a life of their own; one way we can think about this is by tracing the lives of stories as they change and have shifting resonances over time. When we turn our attention to stories as living, we may bring into view their entanglements with people and relational lives, or the effects and powers they have, and the way in which change over time. We are interested in the relationships between how lives unfold and the lives of stories. In all of this, we are interested in stories as they operate, shape and become entangled with conditions of living in all social relationships, from intimate to public lives. This includes the relationships between institutional or officially sanctioned stories and everyday living, and the way in which they interrelate and entangle. We welcome abstracts along these and other lines of inquiries: What might it mean to say that we ‘live’ stories? How does the what, where, how and when of stories matter for how they become part and parcel of life? Material, digital and other contexts for living stories What does it mean to tell stories in changing social, cultural, global contexts? What forms do stories take and how can we understand storytelling beyond words, text and the verbal? How might we trace stories that cannot be told? Fragments, secrecy and the not spoken How might we live fragments or moments of stories and how might they circulate, and be managed or navigated? How might we live stories over time? How does stories impact living everyday lives and all manner of relationships? How might we study the lives of stories and their temporal relations? How might stories manifest through things, images, and the senses? What does it mean to live a life that does not translate into a tellable story? The relationships between life, experience, stories and their political, cultural and structural influences What are the methodological challenges of thinking with stories? What is the affective power of stories? What is a story? The (in-)coherences to stories and storytelling; messiness, spontaneity and moments. Who tells stories and how does that matter? Authorship, power and relational dynamics How does individual, shared and collective storytelling work? (to be continued) We welcome presentations in creative formats (from talks, to conversations, to performances). Abstract submission date deadline: 18 December 2026 Please submit your abstract using this form: Living Stories Conference 21-22 June 2027 Abstract Submission – Fill in form: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=B8tSwU5hu0qBivA1z6… Please spread the word, and we look forward to seeing you in Manchester in June 2027!
