Following AoIR2026's call to (re)generate scholarship on technological configurations, the workshop aims to systematically identify critical concepts from dependency theory that could amplify ongoing debates and revitalize center-periphery research. Proposed by the "Dependency Theory and Techno-Imperialism” study group of the Non-Aligned Tech Movement (NATM), the workshop will survey key concepts across the vast and heterogenous dependency theory literature, and trace how they have been historically deployed by the "dependentistas". Call for abstracts - A Research Agenda for Cancel Culture (Edward Elgar) Abstracts due 15 October Cancel culture is both widely celebrated and criticized as a way of using media to hold people accountable. It is understood as a contemporary media practice, but also a form of social sanction, and as a buzzword to chart political fault-lines. The term traces its origins in African American culture, including spaces like Black Twitter that enable a historically marginalised community to address injustices. Elsewhere we witness call-out culture and similar adjacent practices in activist circles, among fan communities, and in virtually any (semi-)public mediated sphere. These practices - and the ways scholars and others talk about them - point to dynamics in media, culture and society warrant greater attention. "A Research Agenda for Cancel Culture, Visibility and Contestation in Media" (preliminary title) aims to deliver a range of in-depth accounts of how diverse social actors leverage media to watch over, denounce and punish purported wrongdoers. These targets range from sexual abusers to cultural and political opponents. We are soliciting contributions for an interdisciplinary collection on cancel culture, visibility and contestation in the media, to be published with Edward Elgar Publishing. This book will cover cancel culture and related media practices from diverse social scientific and humanities perspectives, including media and cultural studies, sociology, political studies, history and philosophy. Inter-disciplinary contributions are also welcome. We invite contributions that address a wide range of socio-cultural settings, including: - Fandoms and policing of public and private statements - Activism and public denunciations of prominent individuals - Activism overlapping into fandom and consumerism - Politics, polarisation, and so-called ‘culture wars’ - National identities and nationalism as a driver of denunciation in media - Content creators focusing on personal and social grievances - AI-generated renditions of offence and outrage - Businesses, brands and organisational responses to cancellation - Media outrage and impacts on the job market, dating market, etc. - Impacts of cancellation on appeals to a public for support (ex: GoFundMe, Patreon) - Historic precedents to cancellation (ex: Garfinkel’s status degradation ceremony) - Post-cancellation conditions, including support from affective (fan) communities and the possibility of uncancellation. Within these settings, we especially welcome studies that consider the following lines of inquiry: - Reflecting on particular facets of media (affordances, practices, ‘bugs as a feature’) - Positioning the ‘extremely online’ in relation to a broader public - Mediated visibility and cancel culture as cultural (or surveillant) imaginaries - Context- and sector-specific development of best practices in responding to cancellation campaigns - Alternative models to accountability, justice, and morality If you are interested in contributing, we ask you to consider the following steps: - 15 October, 2026: Submit a 350-500 word abstract that includes (a) your chosen topic and/or case study, (b) the theoretical and/or conceptual framework you employ, (c) a brief description of the data you draw upon, and (d) any preliminary findings and implications you are able to share. - 2 November, 2026: we will notify authors if they are invited to submit a full chapter, and provide some preliminary feedback. - 30 April, 2027: full chapters are due (6000 - 8000 words, including references). Description: A programmer who needs to build a website with a login form will not write from scratch the code that encrypts the password and manages the user’s session. Instead, they can import software libraries that already solve these tasks, for example bcrypt to encrypt the passwords and Flask to create the web server. With a single command in the terminal, pip install flask bcrypt, they can install these libraries and make them available in their project. As explained by David Berry (2011, p. 40), nowadays “code is written through a process of collage, whereby different fragments of code (usually called ‘#includes’) are glued together to form the final software product.” This imported code, known as software libraries, contains modular functions created and maintained by other people, companies, or foundations (Fink et al., 2020; cf. Krysa & Sedek, 2008). These libraries reduce programmers’ workload and allow them to focus their attention on the functions specific to their software, rather than recreating functions that are already widely used. Libraries thus operate as central infrastructural objects of computing, defining how a range of computational practices can develop (cf. Bowker & Star, 1999; Sandvig, 2013). Although they are not visible to end users and frequently recede even from developers’ own awareness, libraries play a fundamental role in organizing sociotechnical relations. They have direct impacts on how problems are defined and systems are programmed. The field of software studies is therefore central to understanding this materiality of code and how it is part of a social, collective construction (cf. Chun, 2011; Berry, 2011; Mackenzie, 2025). Because decisions about how libraries are developed directly shape how future information systems will function, there is often wide debate and preparation. In widely used libraries, such as the scientific computing library numpy, decisions are made by a large community of developers and maintainers. Potential changes are debated extensively because they may alter how the library is used by thousands of projects around the world. The popular user interface library React, by contrast, is maintained by Meta, while the well-known Artificial Intelligence library Transformers is maintained by Hugging Face. Software libraries must therefore be understood as sociotechnical, through both their code and their political economy: how they are funded, standardized, and operated. Are these essential code infrastructures becoming platformized (Plantin et al., 2018; Bounegru & Gray, 2024), given that Big Tech platforms have come to define the way essential functions are standardized? The intersection between infrastructure, platform, and software studies makes it possible to interrogate libraries both as programmable artifacts open to reappropriation and in their normative function in the organization of sociotechnical relations across different contexts of use. This Special Issue addresses the underresearched topic of software libraries by inviting submissions on topics that may include: Following libraries as sociotechnical objects The biography of a specific library, traced across institutional, geographic, and disciplinary contexts. The dependencies, forks, and version histories through which libraries accrete, fracture, or fall into disrepair. Inventive and digital methods for mapping libraries, their maintainers, and their downstream uses, including emerging forms of walkthrough and situational analysis. The labor of maintenance, documentation, and community management that keeps a library usable, and what happens when it breaks. The political economy and platformization of libraries How libraries are funded, governed, and standardized, and by whom, from volunteer maintainers to foundations to Big Tech. The platformization of essential code infrastructures, including the role of hubs, registries, and package managers as points of control, such as the npm registry, PyPI, or the Hugging Face Hub. Dependency and lock-in as forms of power, and the asymmetries between those who set standards and those who must adopt them. The geopolitics of libraries, including their adoption, refusal, or reappropriation by public institutions outside the centres where they are produced. Libraries as epistemic and normative infrastructures The normativity inscribed in defaults, abstractions, and application programming interfaces (APIs), as when a library’s defaults quietly become the standard way a task is done. The ways libraries define problems in advance, foreclosing some practices while affording others. Histories and media archaeologies of the software library, attending to how earlier forms (e.g. the idea of a reusable card library proposed for Babbage’s Analytical Engine, later subroutine libraries, package repositories) shaped what a library is today and its politics. Creative and critical (re)appropriation Artistic, activist, and critical making practices that repurpose, subvert, or rebuild libraries against their intended logics. Counter-libraries, forks, and “minor infrastructures” built as forms of resistance or refuge. Schedule 500-word abstracts should be emailed to Gabriel Pereira (g.pereira(a)uva.nl) and Abel Guerra (A.Goncalves-Guerra(a)lse.ac.uk) by November 1st, 2026. Abstracts will be reviewed by the special issue editors and the Computational Culture editorial board. Abstracts can be for articles, interviews or software/special projects (‘Comments’ are editorially reviewed rather than peer-reviewed articles or projects). Authors of selected abstracts will be notified by November 22nd, 2026 and invited to submit full manuscripts following a workshop (see below). A (hybrid) workshop for authors of selected papers will take place early February 2027 at the University of Amsterdam, to enable peer feedback prior to final submission. The full manuscript will be due April 1st, 2027. These manuscripts are subject to full blind peer review according to Computational Culture’s policies. Possible costs for proofreading incurred by the authors are not covered by the editors or the journal. There are no open access or processing charges for Computational Culture. The publication of the Special Issue is envisioned for October 2027. Computational Culture is an online open-access peer-reviewed journal of interdisciplinary enquiry into the nature of cultural computational objects, practices, processes and structures. Epistemological, Methodological, and Ethical Considerations on Participatory Research RC33 Logic and Methodology (host committee) Language: English Session Type: Oral Data donations are increasingly becoming part of the sociological methodological toolkit. As a form of participatory research involving individuals willing to contribute their personal data for social research purposes, donated data has been integrated with a variety of qualitative, quantitative, and computational approaches to study phenomena ranging from cultural consumption and algorithmic curation to media use. While this has been welcomed as a practice that foregrounds participant involvement and fosters awareness between participants, concerns have also been raised about whether and how data donations can be approached ethically, particularly regarding informed consent, data sensitivity, and the asymmetries of knowledge between researchers and participants. Methodologically, data donations have been combined with surveys, in-depth interviews, and walkthrough methods in a variety of triangulation designs. Yet how these combinations are best calibrated – and what each method distinctively contributes to the analytical picture – remains an open question. Epistemologically, the intermediation of digital infrastructures, platform affordances, social backgrounds, and individual factors introduces constraints on what donated data can and cannot tell us, which remain undertheorized. This session welcomes interdisciplinary papers drawing on mixed-method approaches. We specifically welcome contributions addressing: - Empirical examples of data donation studies. - Epistemological reflections on the limits and potentials of donated data. - Infrastructural and technical considerations in designing data donation pipelines. - Action-research approaches where the donation process itself becomes an educational intervention. - The integration of data donation with ethnographic or digital ethnographic approaches. - How participants make sense of their own data when confronted with it during research encounters. Tenure-Track Position - Communication Studies (Environmental Communication) The Department/Program of Communication Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level, commencing July 1, 2027. Communication Studies is a leading program in the critical study of communication and media in Canada. We study the intersection of language, media and culture from an interdisciplinary perspective and train students in the histories, theories and methodologies of Communication Studies. The department also offers a Combined BA in Cultural Studies, and an MA in Communication Studies. With an average of nearly 700 majors each year, Communication Studies is one of the largest programs in the Faculty of Arts and in 2026 we celebrate our 25th anniversary. New book! "Data Are Made, Not Found" And tour!

Hello AOIR friends! I’m sorry that I won’t get to see y’all in Mexico City this year, but I will be on a book tour. Many of you have heard me talk about the census for years. I did an in-depth ethnography of the US Census Bureau and lived to tell the tale. “Data Are Made, Not Found: A Story of Politics, Power, and the Civil Servants Who Saved the US Census” <https://www.danah.org/data-are-made-not-found/> tells the story of what it took for the Census Bureau to make its namesake data in 2020, amidst a pandemic, natural disasters, and political pressure. In the book, I argue that we’re living through “Jenga politics” where systems are getting torn down one plank at a time, as more pressure is being put on top. And I argue that the legitimacy of data isn’t rooted in some mythical notion of data quality, but the social fabric that surrounds a project like this. There is one very internet-specific chapter, focused on what it took for the Census Bureau to build its internet self-response system. (Oh the fun with modernization in a very constrained environment.) Anyhow, it might not be squarely an internet studies book, but I think that many of you will appreciate it nonetheless.
