The UCSB Department of Communication is recruiting for a tenure-track/tenured open rank faculty position. We seek a scholar who conducts innovative, theoretically grounded, and empirically rigorous research using quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-method approaches that addresses the social consequences of AI from an organizational communication perspective. The focus and criticism in these debates are usually directed at the massive consumption of natural resources, their effect on local communities, and the concentration of geopolitical power – especially with regards to large data centers that are currently being planned or built in the context of the hype surrounding artificial intelligence. As essential infrastructure for living in our increasingly datafied worlds and for organising digital capitalism, data centres also raise a variety of geographical questions and problems. These range from the conflict-ridden embedding of data centres in local environments, to their role in larger infrastructure constellations, urban settings, and geopolitical issues such as digital sovereignty, digital colonialism and data localisation. This special issue brings together conceptual and empirical contributions to geographical perspectives in critical data center studies and research on the geographies of digital infrastructures. We look forward to contributions from researchers in digital geography, political geography, urban studies, political ecology, science and technology studies, and anthropology, examining the socio-technical imaginations, material effects and geopolitical and infrastructural embeddings of data centres. *Call for Papers: Oxford Intersections: Social Media and Language * Dear AOIR colleagues: In 2025, Oxford University Press launched a new type of resource: Oxford Intersections. Oxford Intersections reflects the critical role that peer-reviewed interdisciplinary research plays in helping policy- and decision-makers tackle the world’s most complex and urgent environmental, cultural, political, and social challenges. Topics of Interest: We invite abstracts (by Oct. 20) for the Social Media and Language section of the Social Media in Society and Culture Intersection. This section brings together and promotes cutting-edge research from varied methodological and theoretical perspectives to explore how online users employ language and other semiotic resources creatively and strategically — including everyday communication, entertainment, activism, influence, and conflict — while addressing the evolving roles of digital environments, AI, and algorithms in shaping discourse and negotiating identities and ideologies in digital spaces. Authorship: Oxford Intersections welcomes contributors from diverse backgrounds, spanning disciplines, institutions, geographies, and career stages. Authors may include researchers, academics, professionals, practitioners, and PhD students. Authors must hold a research degree (master’s or higher). Submission Guidelines: Manuscripts should be original and not previously published or under consideration elsewhere. If accepted, articles should run between 6,000-10,000 words and will be rigorously peer-reviewed before publication. The Division of Journalism in the School of Communication at American University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position beginning August 1, 2027. Applicants should have a PhD or an anticipated PhD completion by August 1, 2027, in the field(s) of Data Science, Quantitative Methods, or other relevant fields. Candidates should be effective teachers and must be strongly committed to excellence in research, creative, or relevant professional work. We welcome applications from candidates engaged in high-quality scholarship in areas including data science and quantitative methods. Teaching specialization in these fields is preferred, though other areas will be considered. Dear All, We are editing the volume Internet Studies: A Multidisciplinary Approach (Edward Elgar). We are currently seeking three strong chapters, addressing: Platform Capitalism Unbound, Global Platform Labor, and Sustainable Digital Futures Details: Platform Capitalism Unbound A chapter is needed that analyzes the rise of platform capitalism as a dominant economic and institutional logic, with emphasis on: * Consolidation of infrastructural power by leading technology firms * Value extraction through data monopolization * Vertical integration and AI investment * Regulatory responses and new forms of market concentration in the AI era A combination of political economy, economic sociology, and STS is desirable. Algorithmic Governance of Daily Life An analysis of datafication and algorithmic governance in everyday domains is required: welfare, education, policing, urban management, consumption, and intimate life. Emphasis on bias, accountability, transparency, and the reconfiguration of agency under conditions of pervasive algorithmic steering. Global Platform Labor This is the most critical gap. A chapter is needed on: * Gig work, content moderation, data labeling, and remote microwork * Inequality and precarity between Global North and South * New labor hierarchies * Resistance and cross-border solidarities A strong focus on the Global South, combined with labor studies and digital sociology, is desirable. Envisioning Sustainable Digital Futures A Forward-looking chapter is needed on: * Environmental costs of digital infrastructures and AI (energy, water, minerals, data centers) * AI literacy * Human-centered and socially just design frameworks * A combination of speculative inquiry and policy relevance Submission Guidelines Please submit: - A chapter abstract of 300–500 words (excluding references) - A provisional chapter title - Author name(s), affiliation(s), and a short bio (approx. 100 words per author) - Indication of which part of the book the proposed chapter best fits Deadline for abstracts: 30 October 2026 Final chapters should be approximately 8,000–10,000 words (including footnotes, references, and any tables/figures) and will undergo peer review. Dear colleagues, We are getting to the final days of the Call for Contributions for the *II International Conference “Critical Cartographies of the Digital City”*, which will take place on *5 and 6 November 2026* at the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology of the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) in Madrid. The conference examines how platform capitalism reorganises contemporary urban life, affecting infrastructures, borders, labour, care, and everyday arrangements. CFP: Platforms and the Mediation of Conflicts in Politically Hostile Environments

Dear AoIR friends, Sharing with you our exciting call for papers for a special issue in Platforms & Society - Platforms and the Mediation of Conflicts in Politically Hostile Environments. The guest editors - Emillie de Keulenaar, Diyi Liu, João C. Magalhães, Ivar Alberto Hartmann, and myself (Tom Divon) - come to this with a broader concern about the ecology of power through which conflict is mediated on platforms: how it becomes visible, circulates, gains credibility, triggers action, or disappears. We know the power of mediation may be a tale as old as time, but platforms make that power especially tangible and infrastructural. Their normative assumptions, carried through moderators, policies, algorithms, and interfaces, help structure these spaces of mediation and determine what reaches our eyeballs, and what never does. We therefore welcome scholarship that advances our understanding of how platforms mediate conflict in environments shaped by democratic instability, authoritarian pressure, occupation, political violence, or war. The full CFP sets out the range of possible angles, including platform moderation and governance, state pressure and regulation, visibility and participation, propaganda and disinformation, witnessing and evidence, activist and journalistic practices, prosocial or conflict-sensitive design, and emerging technologies such as GenAI. We welcome different platforms, cases, regions, methods, and theoretical approaches. Dear colleagues, We are pleased to announce that registrations are now open for the GIG-ARTS School on Digital Governance, taking place in Salerno, Italy, from 22–26 February 2027. The GIG-ARTS School is an intensive, interdisciplinary programme bringing together academic, policy, technical and professional perspectives on how the Internet and digital technologies are developed, governed, regulated and transformed. Over five days, participants will engage with internationally recognised scholars and experts through lectures, seminars, multistakeholder roundtables and case discussions. *Main themes* The 2027 programme will address: • Internet governance and infrastructure • Platforms and artificial intelligence • Data governance and cybersecurity • Digital sovereignty • International cooperation and geopolitics • Digital law and policy The School will bring together an international faculty of 20+ scholars and practitioners, with confirmed faculty including Robin Mansell, Marianne Franklin, Julia Pohle, Francesca Musiani, Niels ten Oever, Oreste Pollicino, Daniela Piana, Edoardo Celeste, Dennis Redeker, Adio-Adet Dinika, Riccardo Nanni, Andrea Beccalli, Xiaojuan Grace Yang, Claudia Padovani, and others.
