I know, exactly what you don't need to do at this crazy point in the semester. At AU, Profs. Aram Sinnreich, Joseph Graf and I have been working with Electronic Frontier Foundation and New Media Rights to design a survey about DMCA exemption language and its accessibility. Would you be interested in taking, sharing with your students and networks, including putting on social media the survey link <http://bit.ly/2nEfY8j>? Non-software uses of GitHub
by Jim Herbsleb 16 Apr '25

16 Apr '25

I’m looking for GitHub repositories that are used for things other than software, especially where users are actively collaborating rather than just putting together static collections. So far, we have found a few books being written, some musical transcriptions being error-checked, and some policy documents maintained online. Does anyone know of any examples of these or other categories? Any pointers much appreciated. Happy to share what we find with anyone interested. CfP: Outlaw innovation and the invention of the outlaw (EASST panel D04)
by maxigas 08 Feb '20

08 Feb '20

CfP: Outlaw innovation and the invention of the outlaw EASST 2018, 25-28th July 2018, Lancaster University, UK Convenors: Johan Söderberg (Göteborg University) & Maxigas (Lancaster University) Deadline for submissions: February 14th 2018. Submit abstracts and contact the conveners at: https://nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst2018/conferencesuite.php/panels/6286 We would like to invite you to submit abstracts to our panel at EASST 2018 The panel investigates innovation processes driven by antagonistic relations between actors on both sides of the law. We invite case studies of how mutual hostilities between actors are pursued through technological change, whereby each actor seeks to gain an edge against their adversary. Three empirical fields that exemplify this dynamic are the surge of legal highs, information security and crypto-currencies. More examples of the same thing can be found in other fields of empirical investigation and suit this panel. What we will examine under the label of "outlaw innovation" is how conflict breeds innovation. Related to this is an awareness of the tenuous relation between legislation and innovation. The "outlaw" is just another word for an innovator. Concurrently, however, capitalism strives relentlessly to subsume and integrate its own outside, turning this unknown into innovation and new markets. >From this observation follows that the purported outsider position ascribed to various grassroots innovators, users, etc., must be scrutinized. States, capital and academic actors work in conjunction with these outlawed/independent researchers to produce a shared language of common concerns around risks and opportunities inherent in technological innovation, such as in the Tor project. The legal grey zone thus emerges as an incubator of innovation for legal businesses. We encourage paper submissions utilizing diverse theoretical approaches and a wide range of case studies to explore the concept of the "outlaw innovator". -- Maxigas, kiberpunk FA00 8129 13E9 2617 C614 0901 7879 63BC 287E D166 Lecturer in Critical Digital Media Practice Center for Science Studies Department of Sociology Lancaster University https://relay70.metatron.ai/ Go, go, go, said the bird: human kind Cannot bear very much reality. ~ Yeats: Burnt Norton

Any research on/with YouTube API?
by Steven Clift 23 Sep '19

23 Sep '19

So I stumbled into a developer who created one of those "floating" YouTube music video players. After six years of curating the original radio news "flash briefing," I thought hey, why not try video. Combining forces on Android (so far) we've come up with: http://tvnewsapp.com So, here's the deal. The YouTube API is pretty darn interesting and I'd love to connect with researchers who are experimenting with it. I am interested in ways to better automate how to surface live news streams. The app has scores of these. I never expected so many from so many countries. Some countries clearly are all in with nearly all news channels competing on Facebook while others while free on the web haven't joined the YouTube club. Anyway, get in touch if you've dug into the YouTube API. Heck perhaps we can even collaborate. Cheers, Steven Clift P.S. My 150K downloads radio news app: http://1radionews.com

Be part of the article collection on Big Data Ethics
by Daniel Thomas 21 May '19

21 May '19

Would you like to submit an article to an interdisciplinary article collection on "Big Data Ethics"? In collaboration with the journals (Frontiers in) Genetics, Pharmacology, Sociology, ICT, and Digital Humanities, we are organizing an interdisciplinary article collection on "Big Data Ethics" (Guest Editors: Dov Greenbaum, Daniel R. Thomas). The aim of this project is to bring together international experts to provide a comprehensive view of this topic. Would you like to participate as a contributing author? Manuscripts will be peer-reviewed by experts in the relevant field and, if accepted for publication, will be free to access for all readers, and indexed in relevant repositories. This interdisciplinary collection is cross-listed across several journals and so you will need to submit your article via the journal relevant to your field so that your article is in scope of both the collection and the journal. The abstract submission deadline is 30th March but you do not have to submit an abstract in advance, this is so that we can tell you if your article seems to be in scope before you go to the trouble of writing it. It will also help us ensure we get a balance of articles across different disciplines by allowing us to spot any gaps. The manuscript deadline is 31 August 2018 but you can submit before then and the review and publication process will begin immediately. We aim to complete the review process within 30 days and the journal average of time from submission to publication is 90 days. Further details can be found here: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/7202/big-data-ethics Frontiers is owned by the Nature publishing group and is not a scam publisher. CfP Workshop on Engineering Accountable Information Systems Stockholm University Stockholm, Sweden, June 10-11, 2019
by Ben Wagner 02 Apr '19

02 Apr '19

Dear all, we currently have a call for papers on Accountable Systems for a workshop at ECIS 2019 that might be interesting for many people on this list: https://easychair.org/cfp/ECIS2019-EAIS <https://easychair.org/cfp/ECIS2019-EAIS> Deadline for submissions is 15 March 2019. If you have any questions about it please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Best, Ben -- Dr. Ben Wagner Assistant Professor Institute for Information Systems and Society Vienna University of Economics and Business Director, Privacy & Sustainable Computing Lab Email: ben.wagner(a)wu.ac.at | Tel: +43-1-31336-6061 Web: https://www.privacylab.at/ | Twitter: @benwagne_r ECIS 2019 Workshop: Engineering Accountable Information Systems The function of information systems in society is increasingly in focus of information systems research. One outstanding challenge is how to build information systems which promote accountability, as part of a wider debate on fairness, accountability, and transparency principles (e.g., ACM FAT*). This need for accountability must be reflected on all layers of systems engineering, ranging from process analysis to concrete technical components and primitives employed during implementation. Based on our existing research we believe that three specific areas of information systems research are most relevant in this context: user cognition and human behaviour in relation to the design of interfaces; automated decision-making systems and decision-support systems; critical business processes with a particular need for accountability. In all these and further areas, accountability in complex information systems needs to be addressed through technical mechanisms. Existing high-level considerations on accountability in information systems notwithstanding, however, the concrete engineering and implementation of such mechanisms has so far received only limited attention. Similarly, the challenges arising during such transformations of abstract accountability concepts into concrete technologies as well as the critical evaluation of respective implementations are only rarely covered by existing research. We see this workshop as an opportunity to close these gaps through engaging with the existing debate on accountability while integrating key knowledge from the information systems community. Importantly, our approach to accountable systems is not just focused on high level norms of system development, but indispensably also incorporates practical questions of engineering and designing actual systems. We therefore encourage submissions from the above-mentioned and other areas of accountability engineering as long as they sufficiently incorporate questions of concrete systems engineering and implementation. Submission Guidelines Authors should follow the ECIS 2019 guidelines for research in progress papers, with papers between 4 and 7 pages in length. A poster is not required. Full details are available here: http://ecis2019.eu/information-to-authors Submissions must be made through the EasyChair system via the following link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ecis2019eais For questions about the workshop, submissions or review process, contact the chairs via ecis2019eais[at]easychair[dot]org Relevant Dates • Submissions due by March 15 2019 • Replies by April 15 2019 • Final Papers due June 1 2010 • Workshop will be held on June 10 and 11, at Stockholm University’s Kista campus.
