Non-software uses of GitHub

I’m looking for GitHub repositories that are used for things other than software, especially where users are actively collaborating rather than just putting together static collections. So far, we have found a few books being written, some musical transcriptions being error-checked, and some policy documents maintained online. Does anyone know of any examples of these or other categories? Any pointers much appreciated. Happy to share what we find with anyone interested. We invite case studies of how mutual hostilities between actors are pursued through technological change, whereby each actor seeks to gain an edge against their adversary. Three empirical fields that exemplify this dynamic are the surge of legal highs, information security and crypto-currencies. More examples of the same thing can be found in other fields of empirical investigation and suit this panel. What we will examine under the label of "outlaw innovation" is how conflict breeds innovation. Related to this is an awareness of the tenuous relation between legislation and innovation. The "outlaw" is just another word for an innovator. Concurrently, however, capitalism strives relentlessly to subsume and integrate its own outside, turning this unknown into innovation and new markets. >From this observation follows that the purported outsider position ascribed to various grassroots innovators, users, etc., must be scrutinized. States, capital and academic actors work in conjunction with these outlawed/independent researchers to produce a shared language of common concerns around risks and opportunities inherent in technological innovation, such as in the Tor project. The legal grey zone thus emerges as an incubator of innovation for legal businesses. Would you like to submit an article to an interdisciplinary article collection on "Big Data Ethics"? In collaboration with the journals (Frontiers in) Genetics, Pharmacology, Sociology, ICT, and Digital Humanities, we are organizing an interdisciplinary article collection on "Big Data Ethics" (Guest Editors: Dov Greenbaum, Daniel R. Thomas). The aim of this project is to bring together international experts to provide a comprehensive view of this topic. Would you like to participate as a contributing author? Manuscripts will be peer-reviewed by experts in the relevant field and, if accepted for publication, will be free to access for all readers, and indexed in relevant repositories. This interdisciplinary collection is cross-listed across several journals and so you will need to submit your article via the journal relevant to your field so that your article is in scope of both the collection and the journal. The abstract submission deadline is 30th March but you do not have to submit an abstract in advance, this is so that we can tell you if your article seems to be in scope before you go to the trouble of writing it. It will also help us ensure we get a balance of articles across different disciplines by allowing us to spot any gaps. The manuscript deadline is 31 August 2018 but you can submit before then and the review and publication process will begin immediately. Facebook scraper for qualitative analysis

Hi to all, I've been trying to import data form a public Facebook group as dataset, mainly for qualitative analysis. The group includes substantial amounts of data with thousands of users. I would need to extract data (posts and comments) for at least a two months period. I was previously using a NVivo extension (NCapture) to do so, but Facebook recently changes its API, which implies restrictions for dataset import. Tools such as Netvizz don't seem to work at the moment as well. I was wondering if you knew about other ways or ressources to make such a gathering possible. Best, Alexandra

At the centre of these systems and infrastructures are digital interfaces enabling the flow of information and data between organizations and their publics, mediating access to services and generating data about service users. Originating in engineering to describe a face of separation between substances (Bottomley 1882) and, later, places or surfaces where two bodies or systems come together (OED 1990; McLuhan 1962), the concept of the ‘interface’ entered common use in new media studies at the turn of the century to denote mediations between human and computer, between computers or between humans. Interfaces are both technical devices and conceptual spaces. In digital communications, the word ‘interface’ denotes the software and hardware that conditions the interaction between computers and between computers and humans, as well as the interweaving of information and forging of connections that is directed through digital code. Interfaces have the power to shape communication and information access (Gane and Beer 2008) structure the choice of users and make normative claims about the purposes and appropriate use of content (Andersen and Pold 2014; Stanfill 2015). Service providers and content producers inscribe specific roles and types of agency into software interfaces (Lammes 2016) highlighting the affordances of websites (Graham and Henman 2018) and other human-facing technologies. Public service webpages, dashboards and social media feeds, demarcating appropriate modes of engagement, privilege certain content options, presuppose user competencies and deploy user characteristics shaping the production of user data that can be co-opted by powerful interests. Such power asymmetries have been the subject of ongoing policy debates about the crisis in public information (‘fake news’) and the necessity for regulatory intervention enforcing platform responsibility and supporting media literacy. Communications policy research has addressed today’s evolving digital media systems as platforms (e.g. Mansell 2015; van Dijck, Poell and Waal 2018) and as software and content (Burri 2015; Helberger, Karppinen and D'Acunto 2016), but less so as interactions and interrelationships of platform design, service software, content and structured media and information access. For this special issue, we invite contributions that examine interfaces on the institutional, organizational strategy, technology design and access level with a focus on universal/inclusive public communications and services. We invite contributions that include, but are not limited to, the following themes: * Digital interfaces and the structuring of user choice. * Public service ideals and evolving user interfaces: institutional strategies and alternative innovation. * Social inclusion by design. * Interfaces, aesthetics and configuring the public service user. * Digital interface affordances and public value. * Emerging interface technologies. * Digital interface design knowledge exchange and policy diffusion. * Interface regulation.
