Best, Rosário ______________ Call for Proposals *Special Issue on "Internationalizing Information and Communication Design"* *Communication Design Quarterly (CDQ), *the peer reviewed publication of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)’s Special Interest Group on the Design of Communication (SIGDOC) is soliciting article proposals for an upcoming special issue that will examine how aspects of culture, language, nationality, and globalization affect information and communication design in international and intercultural contexts. This special issue will be published in November of 2015, and the guest editor is Kirk St.Amant of East Carolina University. SPECIAL ISSUE DESCRIPTION Until relatively recently, the idea of designing interfaces, informational materials, and instructional content for international audiences was seen as an “extra” or additional process reserved for multinational corporations. Today, it has become a near imperative for almost any organization. But developing effective materials for individuals from different nations and cultures is no easy task. Rather, doing so requires an effective knowledge of how individuals from different cultures and nations - Use various technical and informational products - Access and share information and ideas via different technologies - Perceive and evaluate different aspects of information and communication design For individuals working in the areas of information and communication design, these factors are central to developing materials that effectively meet audience expectations and are used as intended. The question thus becomes *How can information and communication design be effectively extended to international contexts? * The entries in this special issue will seek to answer this question. In so doing, the articles published in this issue will constitute a resource for examining and understanding information and communication design issues and practices in global contexts. POSSIBLE TOPICS FOR THIS SPECIAL ISSUE The guest editor invites proposals for papers on applied research or theory, case histories/studies, commentaries, teaching approaches, and annotated bibliographies that address issues and questions including - How do aspects of culture, language, and national identity affect expectations associated with information and communication design? - What theories, models, or approaches can help us better understand and address cultural factors affecting expectations of information and communication design in international contexts? - What technological factors (e.g., access to the Internet, uses of hand-held devices, and perceptions of social media) do we need to consider in relation to information and communication design in international contexts? - What constitutes “best practices” or “effective practices” for internationalizing information and communication design, and why are such practices effective? - How should information and communication designers work with translators and localizers to create more effective materials for international audiences? - What international legal or policy factors need to be considered (and addressed) when designing materials for users located in other nations? - What kinds of research should information and communication designers do – and on what topics should their research focus – to better understand the expectations of users from other cultures and in other nations? - How should – or can – information and communication designers expand ideas and practices associated with usability, user experience design, and user testing to develop effective materials for users from other cultures and in other nations? - How should educators re-think or revise the teaching of information and communication design to better prepare students to create effective materials for international audiences? Individuals are invited to submit proposals that try to answer these – or related – questions or ideas in order to further our understanding of how to expand information and communication design practices to global contexts. Carter, J.D. LL.M., Associate Professor, Brigham Young University Laurie Thomas Lee, Ph.D., Professor, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Overview In a keynote address at a 1996 conference on information policy sponsored by the U.S. government, scholar and analyst William J. Drake said, “The new information infrastructure can and should be designed to balance the needs of all parties with direct stakes in it: large corporate suppliers and users, the public sector, the non-commercial sector, small and large businesses, and individual users.”[1] However, Drake warned that conflicting interests and competing international models of information access and control could impede the achievement of this vision. He suggested that use patterns and government regulation should be monitored and managed as technological advances caused changes in mass communication. Given the impact of Big Data and technological advances in the nearly 20 years since Drake’s comment, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly proposes to publish a special issue on “Information Access and Control in an Age of Big Data.” The editorial team of Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly believes this research has the potential to make an important contribution to the literature appraising the current state of information and communication technology, consumer and audience behavior, and policy and law, as well as to provide a platform for development of future research in journalism and mass communication. Papers We invite contributions to a special issue of Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly that will address access to and control of information in an age of Big Data. We encourage submissions that approach this topic from an inclusive range of fields and research methodologies within journalism and mass communication and also from other disciplines, with a focus on the implications of the topic to media and society. Papers may offer insights about technological, behavioral, policy, legal and other issues. Possible topics might include, among others, the so-called right to be forgotten on the Internet; social media and privacy; the implications of Big Data for journalism and mass communication; government and corporate surveillance; technology solutions to protect confidentiality in reporter-source relationships; access by news media and other individuals to digital records of government and other institutions; the response of journalism, public relations and advertising to challenges and opportunities in the current environment; search engine optimization and reputation management; intellectual property and freedom of expression; data protection; and the right of publicity. This special issue lends itself to research from a variety of cultural and international perspectives, and therefore papers with international and intercultural approaches are particularly encouraged. Hi, Thanks for sharing this. It makes me think about how we construct our identity online, in the light of this online trolling behavior that we sometimes see. I'm also concerned about these same practices as data and freedoms are under attack as well. Our research was trying to understand how to empower educators...and as a result their students as they work/play in these spaces. Thanks again. Existing (and proposed) regulatory and governance regimes place obligations on those who manage (process, use and collect) data. The end-users of applications provisioned in the cloud also have certain rights that must be respected: tenants and cloud providers bear various degrees of responsibility, which must be properly managed. From a technical perspective, these issues concern the capacity for management: the mechanisms that enable control and compliance within cloud services. While cloud computing has been a revolution in IT provisioning, concerns of interaction with law and policy are now gaining prominence. Recent discussion has concerned issues of locality, including where data physically resides and/or is processed (regional clouds), and the services/information available within a locale (such as the "right to be forgotten"). Further, despite the surge toward the cloud in many commercial contexts, some sectors are hesitant in adopting cloud services due to a mismatch between the legal environment and the technology. Application-specific papers are welcome (healthcare, IoT, etc). Fully implemented and evaluated systems are not essential. Ideally, the output of this first workshop on legal and technical issues will influence both regulators and service providers. Submissions must be in electronic format submitted through this EasyChair link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=claw2015. Papers should not exceed 6 pages in IEEE format (single-spaced 2-column text using 10-point size type on A4 paper, templates available). Submissions will be peer reviewed, and for each accepted paper, at least one author is required to register and present the paper at the workshop.
