Social media data analysis and GDPR

Hello list, I am wondering who else on this list does social media data analysis and is concerned about GDPR compliance. Our research group, Utrecht Data School, works with a number of protocols to comply with rules in terms of data management, data processing, cooperation with third parties etc. However, we were pointed to the limits of the exceptions granted for academic, artistic and journalistic use of of data under the GDPR Implementation Act in the Netherlands. Does anyone here has experience in dealing with GDPR and social media data analysis. We would very much like to start a conversation and develop procedures for doing research and complying with the GDPR. Looking forward to learn more about this. Inquiry on screen shots

Greetings members, I am conducting a research on dialogues around revenge pornography on social media platforms, fb, Twitter and telegram I am using a discourse analysis approach. As part of the analysis, i have picked out several dialogues and screen shot them. My question is would it be ok for me to publish screen shots from the various platforms? I have taken precaution to disguise/hide the names/identities of those commenting. Has anyone engaged in such? And what would be your advice with publishing screen shots? Sad by Design

Dear air-l members, I am proud to present you my next essay called Sad by Design, published by the web magazine Eurozine in Vienna: https://www.eurozine.com/sad-by-design/ <https://www.eurozine.com/sad-by-design/>. It is the title chapter of my next book, which comes out over the next couple of months in Italian (UBI), English (Pluto Press), Spanish and German. In this essay I am investigating the many dimensions of ‘technological sadness’. I quickly realized there are many, conflicting, emotions. I hesitate to look at the entire world from the lense of sadness this or sadness that--but it is a strong angle nontheless. I hope you enjoy my attempt to overcome easy positions of refusal of and contempt of social media. At our Institute of Network Cultures we’re devoted to social media alternatives for many years now (Unlike Us was founded in 2011). This political position, however, should not stop us from investigating the messy emotional world of the online billions. Here's a fragment. Best from Geert — "In the online context, sadness appears as a short moment of indecisiveness, a flash that opens up the possibility of a reflection. The frequently used ‘sad’ label is a vehicle, a strange attractor to enter the liquid mess called social media. Sadness is a container. Each and every situation can potentially be qualified as ‘sad’. Through this mild form of suffering, we enter the blues of being in the world. When something’s sad, things around it become grey. You trust the machine because you feel you’re in control of it. You want to go from zero to hero. But then your propped-up ego implodes and the failure of self-esteem becomes apparent again. The price of self-control in an age of instant gratification is high. We long to revolt against the restless zombie inside us, but we don’t know how. Our psychic armour is thin and eroded from within, open to ‘behavioural modifications’. Sadness arises at the point we’re exhausted by the online world. After yet another app session in which we failed to make a date, purchased a ticket and did a quick round of videos, the post-dopamine mood hits us hard. The sheer busyness and self-importance of the world makes you feel joyless. After a dive into the network we’re drained and feel socially awkward. The swiping finger is tired and we have to stop."

Innovations in Online Research A Network for PGRs Launch Event Wednesday May 9, 2019 The University of Manchester The Innovations in Online Research Network is a regional academic group that aspires to connect postgraduate researchers across the North West of England interested in online research methods. We also aim to promote interdisciplinary and collaborative research opportunities for all involved. This new network will be launched with the first Innovations in Online Research Workshop, on 9 May 2019 (9:30-4:45). This FREE PGR-led workshop will be hosted by The University of Manchester’s Sociology Department in conjunction with postgraduate researchers from The University of Liverpool and Lancaster University. The event is open to all PGR students in the social sciences who use or plan to use online research methods. The eventwill include a roundtable, group discussion sessions, and a networking reception where participants will[JM1] showcase their research using an A3 sized mini-poster. Dear all (and apologies for cross-posting), Registration for the 2019 Electronic Literature Organization Conference & Media Arts Festival is now open. This major international gathering of scholars and practitioners engaged with born-digital / electronic / screen literatures will be hosted at University College Cork, Ireland from July 15-17th. Registration details can be found as follows: http://elo2019.ucc.ie/registration/ ELO2019 (#ELOcork) will feature papers and panel sessions by ~150 scholars, as well as artworks and talks by a similar number of practitioners. Our keynote speakers include Astrid Ensslin, Michael Maguire, and Anne Karhio, and our excursions include a trip to the Jameson Distillery in Midleton (the real distillery, where they make *every* drop of Jameson whiskey). The theme for ELO2019 #ELOcork is “peripheries”, in that delegates are invited to explore the edges of literary and digital culture, including emerging traditions, indeterminate structures and processes, fringe communities of praxis, effaced forms and genres, marginalised bodies, and perceptual failings. The Digital Society: Philosophical Perspectives Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia. 30-31 August 2019 The 15th Annual Estonian Philosophy Conference will take place at Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia on 30-31 August 2019. The program will consist of plenary invited talks and parallel sessions of contributed talks. We welcome contributions by philosophers from Estonia and abroad on any topic in Philosophy and its history. A special track will be devoted to this year’s theme: The Digital Society: Philosophical Perspectives Contributions to this theme are expected to address philosophical issues connected to the development and spread of digital technologies. This includes the social transformations and impact of emerging technologies, as well as the epistemological and ethical challenges that are raised by the advances in robotics, big data, algorithmic governance and artificial intelligence. Contributions that address more general topics in the philosophy of technology are also welcome.
