Grad student seeking interviewees for surveillance project and children project

Hi all! I am a PhD/JD student at the Annenberg School for Communication and University of Pennsylvania Law School. I am currently working on two projects that I am seeking interviewees for. I am hoping to conduct telephone/Skype/etc. interviews with academics and experts like yourselves who study surveillance on social media and social media policies for children. The interviews would be conducted in English and uncompensated. Here is a very brief description of each project: 1) Surveillance of activists on social media For this project, I am examining surveillance (primarily governmental) of activists and protestors on social media. I’m hoping to conduct interviews to gain a deeper understanding of the technical components of surveillance, connections with law enforcement, role of platforms, regulatory gaps, and impacts on activists. 2) Children & social media policies For this project, I am examining the impact of self-regulatory social media policies on children, including harm resulting from regulatory gaps in content moderation, privacy, and security online. I’m hoping to conduct interviews to gain a deeper understanding of how children are vulnerable on social media, what regulatory gaps exist, and what policy proposals or initiatives may be explored to better protect children online. To answer this question, Communities at a Crossroads looks back at the mid-2000s. With the burst of the creative-entrepreneur alliance, the territorialisation of the internet and the commercialization of interpersonal ties, that period constituted a turning point for digital communitarian cultures. Many of the techno-libertarian culture’s utopias underpinning the ideas for online sociability faced systematic counter evidence. This change in paradigm has still consequences today. Avoiding both empty invocations of community and swift conclusions of doom, Annalisa Pelizza investigates the theories of actions that have underpinned the development of techno-social digital assemblages after the ‘golden age’ of online communities. Communities at a Crossroads draws upon the analysis of Ars Electronica’s Digital Communities archive, which is the largest of its kind worldwide, and in doing so presents a multi-faceted picture of internet sociability between the two centuries. Privileging an anti-essentialist, performative approach over sociological understandings of online communities, Communities at a Crossroads proposes a radical epistemological turn. It argues that in order to conceptualize contemporary online sociability, we need first to abandon the techno-libertarian communalist rhetoric. Then, it is necessary to move beyond the foundational distinction between Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft, and adopt a material semiotic approach. In the end, we might have to relinquish the effort to define online or digital communities and engage in more meaningful mapping exercises. About the author: Annalisa Pelizza is a writer, teacher and associate professor in Science and Technology Studies (STS) at the University of Twente (NL). Her research unfolds at the intersection of technology studies, communication science and political theory. Before embracing the academic career, she was active in building digital communities, worked as a media art producer and developed large-scale IT infrastructures.

Searching for Mentor: Twitter API//Data Collection

Hello Esteemed Internet Researchers, My name is Heather Walker and I am a PhD candidate at the University of Illinois at Chicago. For my dissertation project, I am taking a netnographic approach looking at Twitter and Instagram data. I applied for access to the Twitter API via their developer site, was approved, and now have an access key. I've been trying to learn Python by taking free online courses and watching a million youtube videos. However, I hit a snag every time and usually can't figure out how to fix it. I also have been using DiscoverText (incredible tool), but have already exceeded the data limit, making continued data collection there impossible. I am reaching out via this listserv to see if there are any lovely researchers with experience using the Twitter API to aggregate data who may be willing to mentor me? I am working on several manuscripts right now using Twitter data, so can offer co-authorship through the partnership. My interests and collected data thus far revolve around disability, rights, access, and civic participation, diabetes cultural groups, social movements using hashtags, and social movement hijacking. I am also hoping some of you might know about any potential United-States based workshops that provide hands-on training using big-data digital methods? *The Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy**General Issue* *Issue Editors:* *Shelly Eversley, Baruch College, CUNYKrystyna Michael, The Graduate Center, CUNY* The Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy (JITP) seeks scholarly work that explores the intersection of technology with teaching, learning, and research. We are interested in contributions that take advantage of the affordances of digital platforms in creative ways. We invite both textual and multimedia submissions employing interdisciplinary and creative approaches in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences. Besides scholarly papers, the submissions can consist of audio or visual presentations and interviews, dialogues, or conversations; creative/artistic works; manifestos; or other scholarly materials, including work that addresses the labor and care considerations of academic technology projects. All work appearing in the Issues section of JITP is reviewed by the issue editors and independently by two scholars in the field, who provide formative feedback to the author(s) during the review process. We practice signed, as opposed to blind, peer review. We intend that the journal itself—both in our process and in our digital product—serve as an opportunity to reveal, reflect on, and revise academic publication and classroom practices. Additionally, all submissions will be considered for our “Behind the Seams” feature, in which we publish dynamic representations of the revision and editorial processes, including reflections from the authorial and editorial participants. Research-based submissions should include discussions of approach, method, and analysis. When possible, research data should be made publicly available and accessible via the Web and/or other digital mechanisms, a process that JITP can and will support as necessary. Successes and interesting failures are equally welcome. Submissions that focus on pedagogy should balance theoretical frameworks with practical considerations of how new technologies play out in both formal and informal educational settings. Discipline-specific submissions should be written for non-specialists. As a courtesy to our reviewers, we will not consider simultaneous submissions, but we will do our best to reply to you within three months of the submission deadline. The expected length for finished manuscripts is under 5,000 words. All work should be original and previously unpublished. (Annie Abrahams) Digital artist and performer Annie Abrahams highlights how living in the digital world transforms not only the language(s) we speak, but also our relationship to language(s) and the relationship between languages, together with our relationships to other people. ‘Networked language practices […] are simultaneously local and transnational’, observes at the same time Jannis Androutsopoulos (2015). The digital space makes it easier for human languages to circulate, coexist, interact, and mix in a fluid and flexible fashion - linguistic borders are not removed, but they have shifted and become more porous. Language is never alone. Of necessity, digital texts are composed in at least two ‘languages’ and exist by means of perpetual back-and-forth processes of translation between them: a ‘so-called natural language, which is addressed to humans […]; and computer codes, which (although readable by some humans) can be executed only by intelligent machines’ (Hayles 2006). Hayles goes on to argue that ‘in our computationally intensive culture, code is the unconscious of language’. How can we be ‘with’ languages in their plurality, rather than just in-between them and lost in translation? Digital arts and literature have explored the potential of programmable media to play with and perform linguistic complexity and fluidity both across human languages and between human and machine languages. Everyday users are no less inventive and adventurous in their practices, as they acquire linguistic fragments from the flux, integrate them into their interactions, and create their own hybrid modes of expression.
