Hi Yosem and Sweta, 1. What is the best method for collecting pre- and post-disaster data on social media? 2. Is it possible to collect data not just on Twitter but also on all social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)? These are sort of connected. I don’t know anything about Facebook. I believe that Instagram no longer has an API (or at least not one that people I know find adequate to research with), not sure about LinkedIn. Another place that I think would be good is Wikipedia. Here are two examples of researchers who used it to understand events of the type you are talking about. Twyman, Marlon, Brian C. Keegan, and Aaron Shaw. 2017. Finally, there’s Reddit. I think Google’s “big query” maintains the continually updated archive for Reddit. As for Twitter, the problem is that you can only go a week back in the timeline. There might be a dataset available. Two good places to check are the Harvard Dataverse and the Internet Archive (for which I think the Dataverse is includes). The other thing you can do is search for papers on the topic and then write and ask if they’ll share their data. Two (of I’m sure many) that I know of are: http://faculty.washington.edu/kstarbi/ https://cmci.colorado.edu/~palen/papers.html 3. Which social network analysis (SNA) tool has the easiest learning curve and is the easiest to use to analyze relational structures on social media? Assuming by relational structures you mean network statistics, then definitely Gephi. It’s sort of the “photoshop” of network analysis. Just like Photoshop, it won’t be readily apparent how to do even simple things at first, but there are lots of tutorials. If you feel comfortable with basic programming and reading documentation, then for simple things I think NetworkX is a good choice (there’s also a javascript version of it as well I think). Cytoscape (and cytoscape.js) is good, too but I don’t find it as easy to use. Happy to answer any other questions! Benjamin

Hi Heather, I highly recommend Twarc. Although it does require you to use the terminal, it is not hard at all. That’s what I used when I barely knew Python. https://github.com/DocNow/twarc Here’s a nice tutorial: https://timsherratt.org/research-notebook/hacking-heritage/notes/trying-out… It also has a utility for converting the json to csv. Such tasks are commonly related to user authentication, human interaction proofs (e.g., captcha), privacy and security pop-up dialogs, setting privacy and security features within online user profiles, etc. Recent privacy and security incidents of famous online services have once more underpinned the necessity towards further investigating and improving current approaches and practices related to the design of efficient and effective privacy and security. In order to achieve this objective, one possible direction is related to providing adaptive and personalized characteristics to privacy- and security-related user tasks, given the diversity of the user characteristics (like cultural, cognitive, age, habits), the technology (like standalone, mobile, mixed-virtual-augmented reality, wearables) and interaction contexts of use (like being on the move, social settings, spatial limitations). Hence, adaptive and personalized privacy and security implies the ability of an interactive system or service to support its end-users, who are engaged in privacy- and/or security-related tasks, based on user models which describe in a holistic way what constitutes the user’s physical, technological and interaction context in which computation takes place. APPS 2019 aims to bring together researchers and practitioners working on diverse topics related to understanding and improving the usability of privacy and security software and systems, by applying user modeling, adaptation and personalization principles. The workshop will address the following objectives: - increase our understanding and knowledge on supporting usable privacy and security interaction design through novel user modeling mechanisms and adaptive user interfaces; - discuss methods and techniques for understanding user attitudes and perceptions towards privacy and security issues in various application areas; - identify human-centered models for the design, development and evaluation of adaptive and personalized privacy and security systems; - discuss methods for evaluating the impact and added value of adaptation and personalization in privacy and security systems. If you had switched to the non-digest version of the mailing-list in the meantime, to make sure you were still receiving posts, it is now safe to switch back to the digest. AoIR Flashpoint Symposium, Urbino (24 June 2019) The deadline for submissions to the AoIR Flashpoint Symposium in Urbino, Italy, is _today_, so make sure you get your submissions in in time: https://aoir.org/aoir2019symposia/. Registration is also open already. We've created this annual symposia series to be able to address clearly defined emerging issues in Internet research in a small-scale, concentrated setting. Outcomes from the symposia will also be presented at the annual AoIR conference in October. Please note that AoIR symposia are one-day, single-track events for a relatively small group of participants - they accept only a limited number of submissions, and are considerably different from our annual conferences. 2. The internet and other new technologies are rapidly and irreversibly changing global media environments presenting enormous challenges for building policies that both understand the scope of new technologies like artificial intelligence, biometrics, and social media, and can adequately protect the rights of the media and people using them. With the arrival of Europe’s new General Data Protection Regulation and social media giants like Facebook and Google being brought to testify before Congress in the Unites States, the last year has shown just how urgent it is to make sense of how our online media lives should and should not be governed. While understanding this changing technology and media landscape is vital in any context, it raises particularly pressing issues for vulnerable populations living “at the margins”. Many, like refugees, Internally Displaced People, those living through conflict, under threat of attack, or under an internet shutdown often lack the ability to advocate for their digital rights or live under regimes that dismiss those rights in part or entirely. With this in mind, this year’s Summer Institute will focus on five key themes through which we will explore many of these challenges to policy and practice, with a particular focus on their effect on populations “at the margins” broadly understood. The five themes are: 1. Extreme speech online 2. Biometric technology in vulnerable populations 3. Innovative efforts to connect the unconnected 4. Algorithmic bias and inequality 5. Internet shutdowns By choosing these themes, we aim to explore issues such as online censorship, social media content regulation, net neutrality, surveillance and security, the spread of disinformation online, and the relationship between technology and democratic participation - amongst others. Participants will leave with a thorough understanding of how these issues influence, and are influenced by, laws and regulations governing the media and communication technologies in diverse contexts and jurisdictions. NEW THIS YEAR This year, for the first time participants will have the opportunity to brainstorm interdisciplinary policy, advocacy, and technological solutions relevant to the five core themes of the Institute. At the end of the two weeks, participants will be able to pitch their interdisciplinary project ideas for the funding. Successful pitches will receive small ‘flash grants’ to explore the project for 6 months and visit Oxford to present findings at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies. We also hope to offer residential fellowships at PCMLP for a select few to continue to work on these projects. Hi all, I have quite a bit of experience collecting processing and analysing Twitter data at scale using Python, particularly for a couple of projects on Environmental activism on social media, and the Italian antivax debate. I’m also pretty handy with social network analysis, natural language processing and machine learning. I currently run a range of live Twitter monitors and so far our largest dataset is ~4million tweets. Happy to help out in this developing sub-group where I can.
