(with apologies for cross mailing) ** CMNA 2019, the 19th workshop on Computational Models of Natural Argument ** 9th April 2019, Limassol, Cyprus in conjunction with Persuasive 2019 *Special theme: The Role(s) of Argument in Persuasion* DEADLINE 20 February 2019 ===================================================================== CMNA 2019 will be held as part Persuasive 2019, in the beautiful Limassol, Cyprus. Since its inception in 2001, the CMNA workshop series focuses on the issue of modelling “natural” argumentation, where naturalness may range across a variety of forms, perhaps involving the use of visual rather than linguistic means to illustrate a point, for example using graphics or multimedia, or applying more sophisticated rhetorical devices, interacting at various layers of abstraction, or exploiting “extra-rational” characteristics of the audience, taking into account emotions and affective factors. The study of Argumentation, and in particular, argumentative behaviour within natural, real-world communication, compliments the scope and directions of the behaviour change communities and aligns neatly with several aspects of the PERSUASIVE conference. Computers and related digital technologies are tools that are increasingly used to help influence and persuade, as well as to manage and support. Similarly, the use of computers in argumentation has been varied, providing both a medium in which argumentative practises can flourish, and tools with which to study those practises. There appears however to be a natural alignment between the notion of argument as a rational process that can underpin reasoned action, and the idea of persuasive technologies leading to changes in behaviour and habitual action. Special theme for this edition is the *role(s) of argumentation in persuasion*. This theme would be interpreted broadly, to support both polemical positions on, for example, whether argumentation can help or hinder persuasion, and to enable dissemination of recent work at the intersection of the fields. For example, recent work within the argumentation community has considered the use of arguments in formal models of persuasion as well as the role of argumentative dialogue in building motivation for behaviour change. Notwithstanding the special theme, we also solicit contribution addressing, but not limited to, the following areas of interest: - The characteristics of “natural” arguments (e.g. ontological aspects, cognitive issues, legal aspects). - Rhetoric and affect in argumentation and persuasion: the role of emotions, personalities, etc. in argumentation. - The linguistic characteristics of natural argumentation, including discourse markers, sentence format, referring expressions, and style. - The generation of natural argument - Corpus argumentation results and techniques - Argumentation mining - The roles of licentiousness and deceit and the ethical implications of implemented systems demonstrating such features. - Natural argumentation in multi-agent systems. - Methods to better convey the structure of complex argument, including representation and summarisation. - Natural argumentation and media: visual arguments, multi-modal arguments, spoken arguments. - Evaluative arguments and their application in AI systems (such as decision-support and advice-giving). - Non-monotonic, defeasible and uncertain argumentation. - The computational use of models from informal logic and argumentation theory. - Computer supported collaborative argumentation, for pedagogy, e-democracy and public debate. - Tools for interacting with structures of argument. - Applications of argumentation based systems. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are accepting submissions of long and short papers, demonstrations and short abstracts. Warner and the Senate Intelligence Committee. It replied to inadequacies in both reports and the proposals offered to date for the US and UK, highlights the important areas I considered to have not been fully addressed, arguing for what I saw as vital recommendations and proposals for the US and UK. Today's Fake News Inquiry Final report restates my report's recommendations and then concludes the following: 'The industry needs cleaning up. As the SCL/Cambridge Analytica scandal shows, the sort of bad practices indulged in abroad or for foreign clients, risk making their way into UK politics. Currently the strategic communications industry is largely self-regulated. The UK Government should consider new regulations that curb bad behaviour in this industry.' And: 'There needs to be transparency in these strategic communications companies, with a public record of all campaigns that they work on, both at home and abroad. They need to be held accountable for breaking laws during campaigns anywhere in the world, or working for financially non-transparent campaigns. The Profile The Laboratory of Digital and Computational Demography, headed by MPIDR Director Emilio Zagheni, is looking for candidates with a background in Software Development/Software Engineering, who will support scientific projects at MPIDR and collaborate closely with researchers on their implementation. The conference invites researchers and practitioners working on participatory design, as it is encountered and discussed in multiple fields. In 2020, the 18th Biennial Participatory Design Conference (PDC) will be held in Manizales, Colombia, for the first time in South America. The conference will be held in conjunction with the Festival de la Imagen 2020 ( www.festivaldelaimagen.com) one of the largest and most recognized design events in Colombia, which will bring a variety of unique possibilities and encounters for PDC and its community. *PDC 2020’s theme is “Participation(s) otherwise”* Since Participatory Design’s (PD) emergence as a research community, PD scholars have asserted that design is a practical, social and political endeavour. Main commitments include: offering alternative technologies, rendering design processes democratic, open and accessible to wide participation, and amenable to critical scrutiny and mutual learning. By proposing the theme of Participation(s) otherwise, we want to invite the PD community to think further on the diverse meanings and ontologies that participation and design can take on. Let’s open up the understanding of “participation” beyond modernist narratives and theoretically “universal” cookie cutter solutions and account for diverse practices. What forms, conceptions and understandings of participation, collaboration, intervention, design and technology can we draw upon to contest essentialist views on participatory design? Are current conceptions coherent with plural understandings and realities? What haven’t we realized before? From whom else are we / can we be learning? We welcome a variety of different contributions, such as theoretical elaborations, case study analysis, long term explorations and/or methodological reflections. Submissions may address one or more of the following anchor points. These should not be considered as mandatory, but rather indicative of things we believe require urgent action: Local/global - place/territory: Explorations of place, space, materiality, and temporality within participatory design and for technologies otherwise. Economies: Inquiries into the role and scope of participatory design in the critique, reinterpretation and construction of green, circular, open, commons and solidarity processes. This includes also provocative reflections on participatory design processes themselves, understood as a process of exchange. Representation, resistance and governance otherwise: The potential of participatory design practices to support (or undermine) forms of civic participation, power redistribution and conflict negotiation, to challenge authoritarianism, or explore horizontal ways of organising - including making alternative (or resistive) technologies, spaces, systems, processes or infrastructures. Design Research: Explorations of new forms of making otherwise and methodological innovations for design as participatory political praxis (including decolonial, feminist, and collective research and action approaches). Reflections on how those can transform scientific writing to be more representative of collaborative knowledge construction processes.
