The flourishing of the offline digital library is a response to the fact that truly private sharing of knowledge in the online realm is increasingly made impossible. While P2P sharing sites and online libraries with downloadable e-books are precarious, people are led to an atavistic and reversalist workaround. The radical tactics of the offline: abandoning the online for more secure offline transfer. Taking inspiration from ancient libraries as copying centers and Sneakernet, Henry Warwick describes the future of the library as digital and offline. Radical Tactics of the Offline Library traces the history of the library and the importance of the Personal Portable Library in sharing knowledge and resisting proprietarian forces. The library in Alexandria contained about 500,000 scrolls; the Library of Congress, the largest library in the history of civilization, contains about 35 million publications. A digital version of it would fit on a 24 terabyte array, which can be purchased for about $2000. Obviously, most people don’t need 35 million books. A small local library of 10,000 books could fit on a 64 GB thumb drive the size of a pack of chewing gum and costing perhaps $40. This is an astounding fact with immense implications. It is trivially simple to start collecting e-books, and then to share the results. And it is much less trivially important. Sharing is caring. Societies where people share, especially ideas, are societies that will naturally flourish. Web Use Tracking Software

Hi, I've been (unsuccessfully) trying to find some good software for tracking browser activity. The context of the project is online information seeking. Ideally, I'd love to have a tool that allowed for retrieval of the content of search engine queries and social media posts. My first question is whether there is a tool like that that already exists. Assuming that there isn't something ready-built, I'm wondering whether it's better to: A. Gather data at the browser level - e.g., via a plugin B. Gather data at the computer level, via keylogging C. Gather data through logging router activity D. ??? I recognize that any of these options would entail a lot of work in filtering and cleaning data, and if anyone has been down these paths before, and could light the way, I'd appreciate it. Since 2004, established scholars, young researchers and doctoral students interested in the study of people, ICT and work and play have gathered at the SIG-SI ASIS&T Annual Research Symposium to share their work and ideas. Approximately 100 papers, posters and panels have been presented and for the past three years, we have given awards for the best papers published by Social Informatics (SI) faculty and students in the preceding years. This year we gather to celebrate a decade of intellectually challenging and engaging work in SI and hope that you will join us. Our goal remains the same: to disseminate current research and research in progress that investigates the social aspects of information and communication technologies (ICT) across all areas of ASIS&T. Building on the success of past years, the symposium includes members of many SIGs and defines “social” broadly to include critical and historical approaches as well as contemporary social analysis. It also defines “technology” broadly to include traditional technologies (i.e., paper), state-of-the-art computer systems, and mobile and pervasive devices. Submissions may include empirical, critical and theoretical work, as well as richly described practice cases and demonstrations. We are particularly interested in work that assumes a critical stance towards the Symposium’s theme but are also soliciting research on other related social informatics topics. We encourage all scholars interested in social aspects of ICT (broadly defined) to share their research and research in progress by submitting an extended abstract of their work and attending the symposium. Papers that take social informatics further in theoretical conceptualization or empirical grounding are of particular interest to SIG-SI this year as we celebrate a decade of Symposia in ASIS&T. This year’s conference theme is “Connecting Collections, Cultures, and Communities.” In keeping with this theme, the symposium is also soliciting work that focuses on the question of understanding and analyzing connections between social informatics and cognate epistemic cultures and intellectual communities from a social informatics perspective. Some of the questions we ask include: • What are the social and technological forces that enable and constrain connections between SI and cognate intellectual communities? • What are some of the ways in which we can begin to establish and maintain connections among SI and cognate epistemic cultures and intellectual communities? • What can a social informatics approach tell us about the nature of the boundaries among SI and cognate epistemic communities? • What are the challenges and opportunities of engaging in SI work? The schedule for the workshop will involve the presentations of papers and the best social informatics paper awards for 2013 (call to follow). We expect an engaging discussion with lively interactions with the audience. Recent developments, such as the information released by Edward Snowden and others, have increased the awareness that the current approach of governments and business to the governance of the internet and the adjacent technological spaces raises a host of ethical issues. Examples include states tracking citizens online, governments filtering or turning off the internet at will, and corporations using personal data for commercial purposes. The significance and challenges of the digital age have been further accentuated by a string of highly exposed cases of surveillance and a growing concern about how states and corporations use digital traces to do various sorts of tracking and profiling of citizens and users. Despite this growing focus on digital formations, surprisingly little research has explored questions about the relations between business, governance and the internet. This special issue of Business & Society therefore invites scholars to explore what some have referred to as the ‘internet-industrial complex’ – the intersections between business, states and other actors in the shaping, development and governance of the internet. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to the following aspects: · The unclear relations between companies and governments in the internet domain; · The roles and responsibilities of very visible internet companies such as Google and Facebook; · The largely covert operations of state- and private actors in internet surveillance, data aggregation and profiling; · Questions of internet governance, such as new policy initiatives challenging the historical US control over core components of the internet infrastructure; · Organizational developments, such as the emergence of multi-stakeholder forums, where business, governments and civil society actors seek to shape the internet domain; The growing importance of large internet companies in advocacy, policy debates and lobbying efforts. These developments include the increasingly visible and well-resourced presence of internet companies and internet-focused think tanks in settings such as Washington DC and Brussels, and the worldwide spread of policy directors, research centers and advocacy efforts funded by internet companies; · The rapidly growing ecosystem of mobile phones and applications which allow for new communications and information experiences – even in in countries that have weak democracies or authoritarian regimes; · New questions about tracking and data sharing in mobile applications which can (and sometimes do) give themselves permission to access a wide range of users’ data contained in their devices, from contacts, to archives of text messages, to images and videos as well as geo-location. Whether, how, and how often such data is shared with governments in particular jurisdictions, and to what extent device and application manufacturers proactively take steps to either filter or monitor users, are some of the most important questions of concerning government-private sector interaction; · The growing focus on data as a resource for economic, organizational and regulatory developments. In this area, we see not only widespread excitement about ‘big data’, but also a growing focus on data protection and privacy, and an emergent pressure for corporations to be more transparent about their collection, use and recirculation of data; · The potential and real benefits of internet usage and technological developments for wider society, and reflections on future avenues and possibilities for the governance of the internet. Types of Submissions This special issue seeks to expand our knowledge of the intersections between business management, global governance and the digital domain. As such it invites contributions from a broad range of social and political science disciplines, including business, law, politics, international relations, sociology, and philosophy. The Special Issue will feature papers that pave new empirical and conceptual ground in this emergent field of research. We seek both papers that deliver in-depth empirical explorations of the topic and papers providing theoretical conceptualization, analytical vocabularies and innovative methods for the understanding of the intersection between business and governance in the internet domain. We particularly encourage submissions that develop our theoretical understanding of the phenomena by showcasing relevant conceptual and analytical approaches, such as (but not limited to) institutional theory, actor-network theory, cultural theory. This may include a variety of theoretical approaches from various social science disciplines including media studies, governance, organization and communication. About the guest editors Mikkel Flyverbom (mfl.ikl(a)cbs.dk) is Associate Professor at the Copenhagen Business School and founder of the CBS Big Data Forum. Recent publications include the monograph The Power of Networks: Organizing the Global Politics of the Internet (Edward Elgar 2011), and articles in journals such as Organization and Global Networks. His research focuses on internet governance, transparency, corporate advocacy and sociological questions about big data. Ronald Deibert (r.deibert(a)utoronto.ca) is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Citizen Lab and Canada Centre for Global Security Studies at the Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto. Recent publications include Black Code: Surveillance, Privacy, and the Dark Side of the Internet (Random House 2013), Access Controlled: The Shaping of Power, Rights and Rule in Cyberspace (MIT 2010), and articles in International Organization, Global Governance, Review of International Studies, and others. He was a co-founder and principal investigator of the OpenNet Initiative and Information Warfare Monitor projects. Dirk Matten (dmatten(a)schulich.yorku.ca) holds the Hewlett-Packard Chair in Corporate Social Responsibility at the Schulich School of Business, York University, Toronto. He has published 15 books on CSR and business ethics as well as numerous articles in journals including Academy of Management Review, Journal of Management Studies, and Organization Studies. Call for nominations for the 2013 Social Informatics Best Paper Award The Special Interest Group for Social Informatics (SIG-SI) and the Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics (RKCSI) are seeking nominations for an award for the best paper published in a peer reviewed journal on a topic informed by social informatics during the 2012 calendar year. The author or authors will present their paper at the 10th Annual SIG-SI Symposium on Saturday, October 30, 2014 and receive a $1,000 cash award at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) in Seattle in October, 2014.
